  1. I just want to say "you're welcome".
  2. The 4s subshell tends to be a little bit lower in energy due to a couple things. The electrons from the lower orbitals 'shield' the positive nuclear charge from seeing the outer 3d electrons as much, which causes them to be less attracted to it. Also, the 4s electrons are closer to the nucleus and therefore travel around them at higher speeds adding some relativistic effects to the electrons. All in all, the theory you want to look into is "Molecular Orbital Theory".
  3. The fact that I want a cookie is appalling . How can anyone NOT want a cookie?
  4. Perhaps we are talking about different quantum dots. I'm thinking the semiconductor that is confined, you are thinking something else I'm not aware of? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_dots EDIT: Okay, I concede my argument and turn it into a question. How can something have size and yet be zero dimensional? EDIT 2: As another question, to be zero-dimensional doesn't it have to exist at one specific moment and then flash out of existence? For example take this dot ------> . While it is had no dimensions in space, it continues to exist throughout time, making it a line in spacetime. So how can you have something that is zero-dimensional and still use it? I'm working toward my Materials Science degree and this really interests me, so don't take anything I say in a bad way.
  5. He didn't say it didn't exist, GR just says that is exists differently than we thought it did.
  6. Quantum dots are 10 to 50 nanometers in size, not 0-dimensional I would say.

    universe

I'd put money down that there is currently no life on mars.
  8. Yeah, WV = West Virginia. It was a 6 person race for 3 delegate seats, and she got in by 2 votes. Her total vote was in like the 9000s. Initially she had lost by 2 votes, but after a recount, she ended up winning, which is pretty good.
  9. Brenda Brum won the house of delegates seat by 2 votes here in WV. Yeah my vote!
  10. http://tothewire.wordpress.com/2008/11/12/8-year-old-boy-kills-father-and/ Sorry, still new to this.

    Mirror's Edge

Still... playing... MGS4..... can't... play... other games.... yet.
  12. A recent development in the case, it turns out that the boy used a hunting rifle, one that required you to reload it after every shot. He shot the gun 10 times.
  13. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/11/08/national/main4586103.shtml This is why you should ALWAYS wear a condom. The 8 year old kid killed his father and coworker in cold blood with a gun. The judge is considering trying him as an adult, and giving him the maximum sentence to be served in a juvenile detention facility. If a child commits an adult crime (murder, DUI, manslaughter) should they be tried as an adult?
  14. Ha! You beat yourself to this post on the other forum
  15. That is like saying why do things have energy, or why when you push something does it move. It just does! We just have laws to define it.
  16. In this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quintuple_bond we see an example of Quintuple bonds, I was wondering what the hybridization of this would be?
  17. Because of p = h/wavelength To have wavelength you have to have energy, so if you have wavelength, you have momentum!
  18. A photons momentum is defined by it's wavelength. P=mv is a classical approximation. Since everything is a wave now the only 'true' way to find momentum is p = h/(wavelength)
  19. Photons make light. Light is made of photons. Neither of them have inertia.
  20. The only time I remember any of them saying much of anything on this issue was during the VP-Debate, one of the questions was on Gay Marriage and of course SP was ultra-against it(she talked straight to the american people on that one), but Joe avoided the question at first talking about giving gays hospital visitation rights and such, but when asked directly is your administration in favor of gay marraige he said 'no'. Of course, this is Good ol' Joe Biden, so take what he says with a grain of salt.
  21. From what I've always been told is that what guns are used for (hunting) doesn't really require an automatic shotgun for instance. If you need an automatic shotgun to kill a deer than you are a terrible hunter. So what else would that automatic shotgun be used for? Shooting people. Or so they say.
  22. Unreadable wall of text, FTW!
  23. First off, light is always moving at the speed of light. No faster, no slower, if you idea breaks these rules it's wrong in some way. I do know that terminal velocity has more to do with the resistances (friction) than just a random speed that you can't accelerate faster than. I doubt there are much of those in space so that isn't going to be the reason. I don't believe that a black hole would 'suck' in light, because light doesn't have anything to 'suck' in. If the light were already traveling to the black hole, I assume it would go into the black hole, at the speed of light. Now, if the black hole curved space in such a way around it, I could see the light orbiting a black hole, and falling in eventually because of the curvature of space, but the black hole would not accelerate the light from it gravitational "pull".
