  1. First, remember that the differentiation between males and females happened WELL before humans ever came on to the scene. So, if you're looking for the first split between males and females, regardless of species, please clarify. However, if instead you are referring only to humans, then your question seems more related to issues of embryogenesis. Here's a few simple articles on sexual differentiation which clarify that process pretty well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_determination_and_differentiation_%28human%29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_differentiation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embryogenesis
  2. Our neural architecture is incredibly plastic, and dreams serve an important function in consolidating experience and memory. They are a lot like a disk defrag program on your computer, where they help to sort information and maximize capacity. They are powerful parts of our ability to learn and remember, and our emotional state plays largely into which experiences we remember more profoundly. Dreams help bring together those emotions with our experiences so we remember the important ones better later. In short, dreams allow us to better organize all of the information we absorbed while being awake. They allow us to better remember our experiences, and to alter our behavior as a result of learning through experience. Life span extension

I am relatively confident that the single best way to "cure aging" is to die. Sorry... couldn't resist. The first things that comes to my mind is genetic engineering, nutrition, and exercise-related fields. Other readers here may have alternate ideas, or more information about those I've just proposed. Good luck in school, regardless of what you choose.
  4. Aren't you always the one lambasting guys like Bascule and I, repeatedly putting forth empty maxims like, "Two wrongs don't make a right?" Why are you digging your heels in here? The fact that those you describe as "left" or whom you describe as "liberals" also engage in non-productive behaviors in no way, shape, or form changes the fact that the vast majority of the rage being expressed right now by the GOP is misplaced, and quite simply based on bullshit and ridiculous ignorance of reality.
  5. Well, no. Actually, it's not, but nobody is saying that anyway, so it doesn't really matter.
  6. So if it's just us... seems like an awful waste of space.
  7. LCG is remarkably interesting, and I'm looking forward to learning more as we progress in that field. I laugh a bit at the statement about it making "the issue of time machines even more unclear," since they are already an enormous bastion of non-clarity, but I really appreciate you taking the time to walk through some of the key issues which my post above completely brushed over.
  8. I enjoyed "The Magic Furnace" by Marcus Chown. Also, "Blackholes, Wormholes, and Time Warps: Einstein's Outrageous Legacy" by Kip Thorne. Both are somewhat dated, but very informative and accessible. ...Oh yeah... "Six Easy Pieces" and "Six Not So Easy Pieces" by Richard Feynman.
  9. Interesting insight. Thanks. I was of the impression that travel back in time had pretty serious issues with causality and entropy.
  10. One would presume a breakage of the 2nd law of thermodynamics considering the statement I've quoted below:
  11. This assertion is completely vacuous, hollow, and baseless. It is completely meaningless, as it's being presented as some objective fact despite the fact that is merely a subjective opinion. It also assumes a priori that humans are designed without providing a single shred of evidence that this is the case. That's not what proprioception means. Proprioception refers to our ability to spatially locate our own bodies, and to know where all of our limbs are without looking at them. It basically refers to the ability to sense oneself, not to "pin point locations in 3D space" as you've suggested above. I suggest you study more if you wish to present arguments in such absolute terms. If you don't, you will be quickly embarrassed in a community as capable and well educated as this one.
  12. How many flights are there every year globally? How many crashes ar there every year globally? What is the ratio of safe flights to crashed flights annually? Then... How often do you fly? Compare that crash ratio to your own frequency of flight, and you have the probability of yourself being in a crash.
  13. Maybe this will make you smile as much as it did me. Enjoy. wuVgXJ55G6Y
  14. Or, how about the fact that Obama and the secret service are NOT arresting these protesters, despite the fact they have guns, but people were arrested for wearing anti-Bush t-shirts and pins. http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2006-07-23-bush-protesters_x.htm http://maddowgateway.blogspot.com/2009/08/in-which-we-will-know-them-by-trail-of.html
  15. I think you missed my point. I'm saying the monkey is already intelligent, as are countless other non-human animals. I agree, and I never once suggested otherwise.
  16. You have to wrap the text you are quoting with quote tags, like this: line[/hr] ...Then, your response.... Then, Second quote: More response from you. line[/hr] All of that would look like this: ...Then, your response.... Then, Second quote: More response from you.

  18. I just did. So, you are also in support of taking medicare away from the elderly, and letting them bankrupt themselves trying to care for their health before dying a sad, miserable, painful death?
  19. rotfl... Couldn't agree more.
  20. Because people are gullible and will buy into stuff they don't understand. People are allowed to trade despite their fraudulence. As a case in point, I refer you now to the nonsense which is homeopathy.
  21. Pointing to factual evidence and suggesting concern about that evidence [math]\ne[/math] demonizing. In my mind, this has nothing to do with a desire for bloodlust as you continue to suggest. It's about pointing to a problem, understanding what feeds it, and trying to resolve it. If you wish to equate that with lynchings, then you are simply mistaken, and illuminating your incredible bias.
  22. When I read the article, my conclusion is that we should remove private insurers from the equation almost completely. However, I am quick to stipulate that my views have become more extreme in response to the idiocy we've seen from the opposition these past several weeks.

    What is it?

As cool as it is that UC crushed you guys, I wanted to acknowledge the above response as my personal favorite.
  24. I always enjoyed gifts which led to me getting laid. I think most scientists would tend to agree. I'm just saying... which birthday presents do YOU wind up remembering a decade later?
  25. The emotions of disappointment and exasperation [math]\ne[/math] the emotions of rage and bloodlust.
