  1. I think this has been mentioned before by other members... We use complex and imaginary numbers to model physical processes also. Does that mean these observed processes don't actually happen ??? ( must be magic then )
  2. Again this isn't about B Kavanough, or Arnie, or Conservatives. Accusations, true or false can be made against anyone. And while I'm sure you wouldn't personally attack someone who made an accusation, true or false, against you ( as the people you describe have done ), do you think for a minute that your life wouldn't change dramatically ( for the worse ) ?
  3. Romulan 'Bird of Prey' starships use a miniature singularity or Black Hole ( see Star Trek TNG ). These micro BHs emit cpious amounts of Hawking Radiation due to their high temperature. This radiation is captured and utilized to provide power. In contrast Federation starships use matter/antimatter annihilation to provide power. (not sure of the purpose of dilithium crystals, and I couldn't find a 'tongue-in-cheek' emoticon )
  4. This thread is like explaining Relativity... There is no such thing as absolute 'evil' or absolute 'good'. It all depends on your frame of reference.
  5. The 'laws' of the Physics ( IE the universe ), are inherent in the differentiable symmetries of the action of a physical system. Look up Noether's theorem.
  6. The point of the MeToo movement, Ten oz, hs always been to remove the 'spotlight' from the victims of sexual assault. As others have pointed out, for too long, victims have been reluctant to come forward, in fear of having their actions/behavior/life examined in detail, rather than the perps of the crime. This change is needed, that we can all agree on. What we should be discussing is how far we want to go with removing obstacles to victims being able to make accusations without having to bear the burden of cross-examination. That is an integral part of the justice system. This woman has made accusations ( true or not doesn't matter for the moment ) and the accused has stories written about him ,and the assault, daily by every news outlet in North America, without a single shred of evidence being presented in court. Where is the protection for his life being under a microscope if the allegations turn out to be false ? People have lost marriages and family over accusations, and yes, I realize B Kavanough is a public figure, but I only used him as an example because he's currently in the news. I could have used A Argento; no-one bothered looking into her actions when she made accusations against H Weinstein, yet she is alleged to not only assault people , but underage people. Even more despicable acts. Sorry RangerX, I see no shame in having this discussion. That is the purpose of this forum, if you don't think we should be discussing differing opinions, then why are you here ? ( don't mean to imply you should leave, I enjoy butting heads with you and others )
  7. Personally, I don't think the appointment will go through, unless he can prove he is innocent. If he's not innocent of the acts, no big deal, he doesn't deserve the appointment ( no matter his gender, color, politics or religion INow ) But if he is innocent, and he cannot prove it, he won't get the appointment; and even if he can prove it, there will always be a cloud of doubt hanging over his head. But maybe you're right, B Kavanough is a bad example to use because he might not get the appointment for other reasons. ( maybe I should have used Asia Argento as an example )
  8. Other than a few expletives, I didn't see any rebuttals... I'm surprised this is coming from you.
  9. I don't see what you mean by entitled. Losing a Supreme Court appointment after an accomplished/distinguished career ( don't know about that one ) ? Having your wife leave you and your marriage ending ? Losing the respect of your children, friends and co-workers because they consider you a sexual predator ? All because of some vague recollections of something that happened 30 yrs ago, and is not provable in a Court of Law ? Sorry, but Due Process is a right, not an entitlement.
  10. This is not about B Kavanough's suitability for the Supreme Court, nor whether he is innocent or not of the accusations levelled against him ( and certainly not about D Trump ). The issue I want to discuss is whether the MeToo movement has made Due Process a thing of the past. It is no longer 'innocent until proven guilty', but guilty until you can prove yourself innocent. Have we, in our rush to provide a level playing field for victims of sexual assault, taken away the rights of a group of people ( males ) to a fair trial ? The fact that a woman, with dubious recollection ( self admitted ) of events that happened over 30 yrs ago, is to be believed beyond doubt, and could potentially ruin a man's life, unless he can prove himself innocent ( and even then, there will always be suspicions ), seems more than a little skewed. Is this the kind of 'new justice' system we need/want ? And I realize the problems with getting women to report abuse, but surely there has to be a better way than demonizing all men. Men are human and a certain number of them will do vile things. But women are only human too and a certain number of them will use this 'new justice' for their own vile ends.
  11. You cannot assert something doesn't exist because you haven't found it yet. Strange and Studiot, like all good scientists, are not discounting the possibility of an infinite universe because we haven't examined all the contents of the universe, nor the actual universe itself, for possible infinities. IOW, since they don't know they are open to all possibilities that could fit current observations You on the other hand, having neither studied cosmology nor mathematics, but based on your limited everyday experiences, have decreed that infinities are impossible, within, or of, the universe itself. You have eliminated one possibility with no evidence/proof whatsoever. Is that a fair summation of the argument so far ? I just wanted to clarify, because it makes your argument seem rather foolish.
  12. I would think that KJU knows that further interaction between the two Koreas will inevitably lead to his people getting a 'taste' of democracy and economic prosperity. This will then result in the need for political change, and the end of his family dynasty. I'm surprised he is actively pursuing this course of action.
  13. The best way to think of the CMB is not as linearly emitted radiation. !3 billion years ago the universe was at a temperature where electrons couldn't stick to atoms. It was essentially a plasma much like our sun. At this characteristic temperature, a black body radiates ( EVERYWHERE ), centered in the visible light range of the EM spectrum. The universe has since expanded more than three orders of magnitude; and as the natural gas laws predict, it has cooled proportionately to 2.7 degrees. At this characteristic temperature, a black body also radiates ( EVERYWHERE ), but at much reduced frequency/increased wavelength. The peak of the radiation curve is now centered in the microwave region. IE, the CMB radiation wasn't emitted 13 billion years ago. It is being emitted NOW, by a black body at 2.7 degrees. That is why we see it everywhere.
  14. You are arguing against the universe being infinite by saying no ( physical ) finite subsets of it are ??? I don't think that's valid logic.
  15. The 'energy of a field' ( not an accurate description ) is essentially the configuration of the system. It is clearly seen in the case of potential energy; being described as the position of a test object with respect to the potential field.
  16. My favorite is brandy ( or cognac/armgnac, even distilled from fruit like apples/pears as is Calvados, John ) Scotch ( smooth not 'peaty' ) and corm mash whiskey I can drink, but I detest rye whiskey. Even more so after Saturday night, a double 'stag' for two co-workers. Had to drink rye whiskey, got polluted, Threw axes competitively, ended up in bars where I was wand-ed and frisked ( by a woman ) for guns and Hell's Angels provided security, and didn't get home till 4:15 in the morning. Definitely no way for someone approaching 60 to act. And I blame it on the rye.
  17. What is wrong with you guys... If you want 'flavor', drink a good bourbon, brandy or scotch. Beer, on the other hand, needs to be crisp and refreshing. German style lagers like Stella, Heineken or Kronenberg brewed in Europe, or even other parts of the world like China's Tsing Tao or Australia's Fosters, are great thirst quenching patio drinks. First time I tried Guinness, over 35 yrs ago, they served it warm, and I hated it. These days, its available in cans, and when refrigerated it is quite crisp, light and refreshing. If you're having a burger or chicken wings ( or fish and chips for you Brits ) it has to be beer; and if the chicken wings are hot, it definitely needs to be refreshing. But you can also 'pair' different style beers with different foods/meals as their flavors complement each other ( as they do with wines ).
  18. That was my understanding also, Strange. Large scale 'extra' dimensions are pretty well ruled out by the fact that gravity falls off with the inverse of the distance squared. ( exactly the same as EM radiation, as the neutron star collision observations re-affirmed ) Curled up, Planck scale dimensions would predict a 'leakage', and much steeper fall-off for gravity ( as the inverse of the distance to the power D-1, where D is the number of spatial dimensions ), but only at extremely small separations. We would need a collider the size of the galaxy to generate the energies that would allow us to probe such small separations.
  19. More hardware than software ? I remember the old BYTE magazine in the 80s, had a hardware project each month, and when asked what programming language he preferred, Steve Ciarcia ( the EE who did the monthly hardware project ) replied "I program in solder". What I tell all the junior engineers at my work... "All the fancy little equations/formulas for stresses, flows, heat transfer, etc. that you use, I derived from first principles" ( I don't add that I don't remember how to do half of it nowdays )
  20. Me and Zap ( I think ) were referring to an old, BnW episode of the Twilight Zone, staring Burgess Merideth ( the Penguin ), called All the Time in the World ( I believe ).
  21. Alaska is not in Canada. And although similar to our Yukon Territory, the laws are not the same.
  22. That would be great. I would have time to do all the reading I wanted. I wouldn't have to bother with mundane, everyday stuff. Then, my eyeglasses would break. Damn you, Burgess Merideth
  23. I don't wax as eloquently as some of the other posters. I firmly believe we are here to annoy others with silly questions.
  24. Falls off as root(1/r), where r is the distance to the center of the massive body escaping from.
  25. I don't think you'll get too many applicants to join the Police services in a lot of US cities if they have to patrol the streets unarmed.
