  1. No it doesn't, CharonY. It would be nice if they were, but a lot of media personalities are real a*sholes. ( some even go on to become POTUS )
  2. I have waited to weigh in on NDT's behaviour to see which direction this thread would go. Other than the case involving alleged drugging, which would be criminal IF PROVEN IN COURT, the others are simply cases of bad behavior. And going on about it, and making assumptions about thoughts/circumstances/actions for six pages is simply spreading gossip. Is that proper behavior on a science forum ? The fact that NDT is an excellent populariser of science does not mean that he has to be a proper, or even good, person. We've had some people who I thought were excellent scientists on this very forum. But that didn't translate into people skills, and some had really bad attitudes. Fortunately I can separate the two qualities, as no-one is a 'total package'. I might listen to a NDT lecture, but maybe I won't go on a date with him ( also I like women ). I suggest we all do the same. Other than Raider, who is still at that wonderful age, we are all old enough to know what is socially acceptable behavior. And I'm sure some of us ( myself included ) have chosen to act inappropriately ( never criminally ) at some point before reaching our old age.
  3. I'm not as pessimistic as some people about Canada. As a matter of fact, I like it here; so I choose to stay, and make a life. I also don't have a problem with America; they are nowhere near as bad as some make them out to be. If it wasn't for that little bit of extra arrogance, you could put Americans and Canadians in the same room and not be able to tell them apart.
  4. At first I thought you guys were being too hard on a new member. Maybe I'm just naïve, but I continue to overestimate their moral/intellectual integrity.
  5. That was over 40 yrs ago, Hans. In case you hadn't noticed, they are close to being in a state of war. And what about Latvia, Estonia and Poland ? ( Canada has troops in Latvia, not that they'd do any good against invading Russian forces; purely symbolic )
  6. Almost everyone involved in this discussion considers the Bible ( and certainly the Old Testament ) works of fiction. Yet here you all are trying to find the actual truths of these fictional allegories. Shall we discuss whether Pinocchio's nose actually grew when he told a lie, next ?
  7. Really DrP ? Do a side by side comparison with any other major power of the world. How well does Russia ( the subject of this discussion ) stack up against the US ? How concerned are her neighbors ? Or China. How do Tibetians, Japanese and Taiwanese feel about them ? Us Canadians aren't stressed at all about having the most powerful military in the world, next door. Americans have pulled your 'arse' out of the fire a couple of times already; and are ready and willing to do it again. ( even with a dumbass as their leader )
  8. The science of global warming due to 'greenhouse' gases is relatively simple, and well understood. If you have trouble looking it up or understanding it, I , or any other member can easily explain/clarify it for you. Similarly the levels of these greenhouse gases has steadily increased during the last several hundred years of industrialization. That being said, they are not at the highest levels ever on the Earth. This means that runaway global warming, which would turn the Earth to a Venus-like planet is not possible. The Earth will survive global warming; whether humans do, is another question altogether. Everyone realizes something must be done about it. Our survival, or at the very least our way of life, depends on it. Some of the proposals to mitigate global warming, however, would have little or no effect, mainly redistribute wealth from developed countries to non-developed, or drastically change our way of life ( to avoid changing our way of life ). And that is the biggest issue. Not that global warming is a fantasy, religion or conspiracy ( it is quite real ). But how to tackle it without adversely affecting people's livelihood and way of life.
  9. It's too bad... At one time, the Ukraine was the third largest nuclear power in the World. They decided, in 1994, to join the NPT, and dismantle their sizeable nuclear arsenal. I don't think even V Putin would be brave enough to pull these stunts if the Ukraine was still a nuclear power. If you live beside a 'bear' ( not you Silvestru ), you'd better invest in a rifle. ( say what you will about 'evil' Americans, but Canadians haven't had to face this kind of behavior since 1812 )
  10. Recently watched a movie called Alpha ( about a boy and his dog ), set in Europe 20,000 yrs ago. One scene shows the boy sleeping in a tree while the galactic firmament can be seen overhead. My night vision isn't that good, but I can't see the galactic plane in the Northern hemisphere, and I understand it is only visible in the Southern hemisphere. And I realize this is a movie ( pre-historic people with good teeth ? ) and certain artistic liberties may have ben taken, but is it possible that the attitude of the Earth, and Solar system, with respect to the galactic plane, has changed ( turned upside down ) during the last 20,000 years ?
  11. Two electric cars ? Have you priced a Tesla model S ? Maybe the American and Canadian governments should have given money to Tesla instead of bailing out those idiots at GM. Teslas would have been cheaper and a whole lot of people wouldn't be losing their jobs.
  12. Wheeww... You said 'rooster'. I thought you said 'poster'.
  13. Maybe before you do the OS re-install, you might try cleaning out cookies, trackers, etc. Ccleaner does a decent job, and is free ( also cleans the registry ).
  14. Yeah, not one of my best examples, JC. However, I really don't think Jinsuk would have caught on.
  15. Almost happened in Canada about a month ago.
  16. Most people have varying views on a lot of subjects. S Bannon has some interesting viewpoints, and I can consider just the ones I favor or agree with. I don't need to call him a racist neo-con. Just like I can consider A Gore's views on climate change ( the science ) and disregard the hyperbole. I don't need to call him a bleeding-heart liberal pinko ( is my Archie Bunker showing ? ) Or I can consider the valid points made in the Bible about the way to treat your fellow man, and disregard the flights of fancy. I don't need to call it a mythology indoctrination manual.
  17. Because a single one can be generated at one point and show up on a detector at another point. Science works by making observations, fitting a model ( usually mathematical ) to those observations, making predictions based on that model, verifying those predictions by further observations, and changing the model accordingly. The process is continuous and evolving. Your approach seems to be... My rubber ducky behaved this way, yesterday, with my other toys in the bathtub, so quantum particles must behave the same way.
  18. OK, another example... You and I are sitting in a car that is travelling down the road at 100 mi/hr. I toss a baseball at you, and you catch it, no problem, as that ball is only moving at a couple of mi/hr. Now you are standing outside the car which is still moving at 100 mi/hr, and I, from inside the car, toss the baseball at you. That baseball will be moving at 100 mi/hr ( relative to you ), and it will hit you with enough energy to injure you severely. Did that knock any sense into you ? Do you now understand the importance of frames when dealing with energy ?
  19. Speaking of cherry picking... Did you read the part where he mentions special 'interpretation' of the Einstein Field Equations ? The simple fact that there are no gravitational terms on the stress-energy side of the equations does not mean that there is no contribution to the curvature metric ( right side ). The curvature side is gravity, and the generally accepted interpretation is that it contributes to itself. Otherwise, as he also explains, there could not be vacuum solutions. You are quibbling over the INTERPRETATION of the model used to describe the reality. Certainly there can be no quibbling over the actual reality.
  20. Let's see if we can put it another way... If you are standing at the injector and shoot a proton into the accelerator at CERN, you can give it enough kinetic energy so that when it collides, it can create particles that are orders of magnitude more massive/energetic than a proton's rest mass/energy ( like a Higgs boson ). Yet if you were moving along with that proton, you would measure its kinetic energy to be zero, and then you would scratch your head when these massive decay particles are produced in the collision. you would not understand where this 'extra' energy came from, and assume that conservation laws are violated. And you would be wrong ! Do you see why frames matter ?
  21. No illustration. But, if you are going uphill, the throttle is open and the engine has to produce power to turn the wheels. When going downhill, the throttle is closed and the engine is producing little power, but since it is still connected to the wheels ( through the clutch/transmission ) it is forced to turn ( reciprocate ) and compress air. An internal combustion engine is basically an air pump. this work done on the air, in turn, slows down the wheels
  22. The quick answer is that normally the engine 'drives' the wheels, but in your case, the wheels are driving the engine, and effectively doing work by compressing air in the cylinders ( along with gearing, friction, heat, and other losses ).
  23. Not to worry. String Theory has the same problems with making testable predictions. Yet hundreds ( if not thousands ) of Physicists and Mathematicians are actively researching the field. And contrary to what Quiet says, Gravity is not the only missing piece of the puzzle. All we have is models. And models can always be improved.
  24. From your own link ( to the other Physics Forums ), this is what PeterDonis said... "At the quantum level, this means gravitons (the quantum particles associated with the massless, spin-two field) interact with other gravitons. At the classical level, it means that, since the EFE is nonlinear, curvature can be present even when the “source” on the RHS of the EFE is zero, i.e., there can be vacuum solutions of the EFE that have curvature present. (Schwarzschild spacetime is an obvious example.) In other words, on this view, the answer to our question is “yes”: gravity *does* gravitate!" Maybe you should read what you link to. Sigh ! Who's wasting whose time here ? Reference https://www.physicsforums.com/insights/does-gravity-gravitate/
