  1. xyzt has been banned. As much as we appreciated his knowledge in certain areas, his inability to distinguish cranks from people asking genuine questions and general need to become less helpful than abusive has become quite tiresome. I'm sure he'll be glad to be rid of this (in his words) cess pit.
  2. Belated notice: biomart and about 15 other accounts were banned as sneaky spammers for a certain company. Just now I have added another member, Kellymiller, to that list.
  3. LisaLiel has been banned as a duplicate account of BlueSpike and Frank_Baker. We had been alerted to this possibility a while ago, but had no real evidence at the time. The original account was and is not banned, but it will be if they keep opening new ones and reintroducing closed topics.
  4. Love Audible. I use it to listen to books in the lab if I'm doing something especially monotonous. Makes the bus more pleasant too, since I can't read on buses without getting sick.
  5. I think we could all do with a reprise from the hail of foul language and abuse from Questionist. He has been suspended for a week to cool off and maybe read the modnotes he was so keen on ignoring. ---------------- randomc was suspended a few days ago for a week. This wasn't updated at the time because we were considering a ban.
  6. http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/88546-is-it-normal-to-lose-a-dangerous-amount-of-blood-from-small-wounds/page-1#entry862830 A question of why Acme's post was removed, when other member's post was not. It is not uncommon for us to only remove posts that continue to derail a thread after a modnote has been posted. Not removing a post is not an open invite for others to continue down the same line of off-topic conversation. That much should have been blatantly obvious to anyone that had bothered to read the mod note that was posted. To be clear, we only punish members for infractions they commit on this site. Comments about a member based on their behavior elsewhere are very much off topic - for this thread and most others. If you believe that staff should be given a heads up about someone, PM them.
  7. ! Moderator Note Acme, enough. You are not a moderator, you do not get to be the arbiter of what is and isn't a rules violation. We have received your many, many reports. We haven't commented here because we don't agree with your assessment. Now please, everyone, take a breath and stop with the hostility. Edit: to clarify, this is to say we don't value reports when members notice an infraction. However, when you send upwards of 5 or so reports in the space of a few days, you can safely say that we got the message. If we don't choose to act on it, it's because we either don't agree or we're still discussing. It is not an invite to take matters into your own hands and post reminders of the forum rules in response to other members.
  8. GeneralDadmission has been suspended for 7 days for a number of rules violations, which have been repeated and repeated to no avail.
  9. anonymousone had been banned after a spectacular meltdown.
  10. Aemilius has been banned following an abusive PM and on request.
  11. ! Moderator Note Please keep the personally snipes and slurs against groups of people out of conversation. It's not productive.
  12. Wild Cobra has appeared! hypervalent_iodine used one-week-suspension!* It was super effective!** *(for the crimes of continued soap boxing and refusal to listen to staff) **(we hope)
  13. I started using EndNote for referencing and filing away papers when I was in honours and haven't looked back since. It synchs very well with Word and it has proven to be a much simpler way of searching through my documents for papers, since you can attach them to the relevant citation in the program. Latex is also on my list of things to try and pick up, but it's very low down on said list at the moment. I have some private high school students whose school uses Onenote for all their official class notes / lectures. It hadn't occured to me how it might be useful in other ways, so thank you for the suggestion. I'll look into it.
  14. I came across what seems like a nice, biology inclusive custom dictionary for MS Word today and thought I'd share, since it's a useful tool to have for people who dislike red, squiggly lines. I have another one that I use for chemistry as well, which was linked in another thread here. If anyone has any other useful tools like this for writing in biology, I'd love to hear about them, as I am currently in the process of writing my first research article since moving into the field(s) of microbiology / genetics.
  15. After some discussion, the duplicate account of Mrs Zeta, Marios Kyriazis, has been banned. Despite his claim to the contrary, he did not have to create a new account at all. He was informed that moderators could not change his name (we don't have those powers) and not being happy with that, created a new account. Though perhaps harmless, we did not like the precedent it set. ----------------- meldyer has been banned as yet another joshgreen sockpuppet.
  16. laster has been banned as a joshgreen sockpuppet.
  17. winger has been banned as a sockpuppet of joshgreen, who has also been suspended for a week for the same offence in addition to being an abusive troll.
  18. Update: Since is clear that Relative refuses to make productive use of this forum, staff have decided that it is not in the forum's interest to allow him to continue here and as a result, he has now been banned.
  19. Irbis/SlavicWolf has been banned due to frequent violations of rule 1, regarding slurs against groups, and a combination of other infractions.
  20. overtone has been suspended for 31 days following his continued refusal to pay attention to countless moderator warnings about soap boxing and backing up claims with relevant citations.
  21. ! Moderator Note Let's try stick to the topic, please.
  22. serloco has been banned on request.
  23. ! Moderator Note Given how often threads about the reputation system come up and following a recent comment in a similar thread, staff have decided that this thread is is to be pinned. Virtually any objection to the rep system has been addressed here and so we will refer members to this thread should any questions arise in the future.
  24. ADVANCE is hereby banned for a series of abusive PM's and whatever else you can think of by me, from the depths of the hell that he claims I should live in.
