  1. Science is needed in most careers. I've always have an interest in Agriculture science, forestry, floriculture, aquaculture, farming and some green energy fields. Maybe you can consider these too. However, the pay is generally not compatible to for example...bankers, and you'll be more at the mercy of god. In good years, good harvest, in bad years or pure bad luck, some other things happen. Global Catastrophe Scenarios - Yes. The FAO or some organisations is always thinking of world hunger issues. Big Picture Astronomy - No. Limited, Unless it is some academic positions. Philosophy - Yes. can think of some and apply it. Morality - Yes. Thinking of profits or polluting the lands or living the right way. Cause and Effect (especially the Butterfly Effect) - eh...Yes but I don't know what is the butterfly effect. The 5 Ws as it applies to humans (who, what, where, when, and why) - Probably yes. In some case, it is not required to look too deeply into such things. But if you look into it and get some ideas, it is good too , I guess.
  2. This requires damming up the bay or river. Rivers have a natural eco-system. I think my fishing will be affected. The fishes can't get up the river. River systems and bays are the nurseries of fish stocks. Many ocean fish started their lives at the estuaries and rivers, slowly moving into the sea. Rivers are also dammed to convert into freshwater reservoirs to supply urban towns. My dad used to do shrimp casting at the estuarine, and crab hunting. There are really many beautiful fishes, and weird little creatures. But the government likes filling swamps.
  3. I'm at a crossroad , don't know which route to take.
  4. How to differentiate Gypsum, talc( sichuan Steatite) and magnesium chloride ? Food grade types and I think all are white powders. I've not observed these materials up close yet. From articles, steatite is mainly talc, magnesium silicate. Does steatite contains calcium and other minerals in signifcant amounts ? Is there any good adding talc to the soil ? Some articles says talc is linked to some health problems. If the talc is used for farming, like adding to the soil, instead of for cosmetic use, is it safe ? or is there a possibility that some unknown impurities in talc may accumulate in the crops ? Generally is there any difference between food grade gypsum and construction grade gypsum ,and plaster of paris ?
  5. I'm planing to operate a plant nursery in future. now I can only dream. I read that some green house input carbon dioxide. So I'm looking into the cheapest, cleanest and safest way to produce some CO2. I can burn some paper or dried leaves. but it may create monoxide, and probably dioxins. In enclosed space, it can be hazardous. The aquarium people use sugar and yeast to ferment in a bottle. I probably need something with a bigger scale. They are burning some oil or fuel to create CO2. However, it seems to be quite wasteful. Some oils are quite cheap actually, however I will consider cheaper options if there is one. What do you think of the above methods ? and is there any other methods of producing CO2 for a greenhouse or shadehouse ? Thanks.
  6. caffeine is in coffee and tea. soda has probably phosphoric acid, and the carbon dioxide in water cause carbonic acid or something. I think caffeine may lead to calcium loss, as some articles regarding osteoporosis say it. I'm not sure about iron and vitamins.
  7. You can look up pseudo science topics like Radionics and perpetual motion machines.
  8. Quakes are random. yes, due to advance in communications, they are reported more. The media report whatever that is news worthy. especially if there is much casualty. Only the scientists knows better what is going on. The media probably doesn't know that much. But its good to know sometimes. If you are planning a vacation, and Haiti is in chaos, will you go there ? I live very near an earth quake prone belt. but I've never experienced anything more than a slight dizzy feeling during an earthquake. Thanks to a land mass that usually buffers the impact. Science can't predict earth quakes, like they predict weather.
  9. no he didn't guess that one right. There is one on april 11 at Solomon islands.
  10. memory problem....you can read up how to remedy poor memory. I'm not expert in the diet and stuff. but they say zinc supplements may help, most multi vitamins have it. or you eat a balanced diet that contain zinc and see if it works. zinc is found in seafood, probably shellfish,crabs,.... red meat and some nuts ... Sometimes, if you sleep well, the memory may improve. I understand how it feels. I remember during my army recruit time. It was a tough time. Didn't have enough sleep. and have some problems adjusting to the environment. After a few days, I had problems remembering the steps of the rifle drills. You have an ambition, and it isn't right for me to comment on it. Me I wish others don't dampen my dream too. but if it gets tough, you can see the Medical officer, if you get into the air force. I took anxiety drugs, and was off for 6 months now. I requested for very low dose. but still it caused some effects. One of the effect is my little bro is affected, and that makes me worried. At another doctor, a different drugs caused the face to feel stiff, or rubbery, like a second skin on the face. Before that , I went to docs complaining about pains on the body here and there and they can't find anything wrong. do you think anxiety disorder is depression ? I thought that I read it before somewhere.
  11. This malthusian thing, is it about the growth of population like doubling or exponential growth ? I think its quite true in general. The human population may be limited by disease and war though. Just ranting about the topic, what we don't like about earth sometimes.... Religious people will tend to believe that advance in technology will solve all problems. Religious people don't believe in population control. ... "God wants them to have as many children as they can " or something like that. There are some countries that are so crowded and poor that the people have to go elsewhere to earn a living. This relieves the pressure in their own countries but puts stress in the foreign lands. The key is in abstinence, not taking out an unborn life. or at least some preventive measures, but pope doesn't seems to endorse the use of condoms and things like that. However, I also seems to have the idea that for the human race to improve, more offsprings is necessary so that the better ones get selected. Its a dilemma.. The biomass is still the same, people increase, but the fish and animal populations decrease and one or two go extinct one in a while. There is no sustainablility. The resources are limited. and future wars seems inevitable. but don't let me get you people down. I try to live my life.
  12. get a multimeter. Its cheap if you get made in china ones. Every electronics guy needs a multimeter. or maybe poke with test pen ?
  13. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100322/ap_on_re_as/as_china_sandstorm Anyone knows how to remedy this problem ? What's your take on this ?
  14. Gerald Durrell's books have been a good read. Jim Corbett books - The Man-eating Leopard of Rudraprayag The Temple Tiger and More Man-Eaters of Kumaon
  15. I'm curious. Do you drink diluted lemon juice on an empty stomach in the morning ? I searched but found mixed opinions. This is claimed by some people that it is good for the body in some ways. I have a weak stomach, thin stomach wall, so I doubt I'll do it. I took one type of lime drink without problem. This is a MLM product, just add water to one or two spoon of this product, and its lime drink. I like to know if you drink dilluted lemon juice very often, like every hour, is there any negative effects ?
  16. bladder infections can probably be treated with herbs. but its better to consult health professionals rather than take what I said. Barley water, that is barley boiled in water, for a while say 15-20mins , until the barley show signs of softening but not soft. optional add small amounts of rock sugar, drink the water after leaving it to cool down for a while. You can look into herbs like Plantago major. and I think fresh fruits like apples and chinese pears, pineapple may have some effects too. not canned ones.
  17. er..no one said anything ? I'll give it a go, but I've not done it before. What is described could be preparing the culture medium meant for bacteria or probably mould and fungi. Plants tissue culture use different ingredients. I think beef bouillon is beef stock. It is in dry form. The usual way of sterilising it, is to autoclave it. But autoclaves are expensive( to me), and over at my country, only labs and doctors have it. Some heat resistant bacteria spores will be present if you just heat it to boiling point. Autoclave goes up to 121for 25 min and 132degC for 5 min, which effectively sterilize it. otherwise there is a method called tindallization which is less effective. or pressure cooking it. and when you innoculate your culture, in labs they do it at a laminar flow cabinet. If you are DIYing something , you may need at least a box that is sterile inside. If you didn't use a sterile box, various types of bacteria or mould in the air gets onto the medium the moment you open the lid of the medium container, and the medium will be contaminated. but it depends on what is the purpose of doing it. Simple experiments will not need that much preparations. bacterias can be quite dangerous. or I'm just paranoid.
  18. I haven't grown any tomato plant. The last time I buried some fresh seeds with the pulp still covering the seeds, nothing came out of the soil. It seems by getting rid of the pulp and dry it, the seeds have a higher chance of sprouting. but I'll have to try it again. Mangoes can be eaten and dispersed by fruit bats or flying foxes. Monkeys too. They just don't eat the hard seeds.
  19. we will be able to jump like Tim Duncan.
  20. diabetes is a fatal disease in the past when the cause of the disease has not been determined. The people of the past holding the genes would have been limited by natural selection. The people at present will still survive with diabetes, even if they have the diabetes causing genes. Their chance of reproducing is better. So those holding the genes could be on the increase. Evolution happens all the time to any living things. so, I'll disagree.
  21. casual sex has a risk of Aids and STD. You should do it with someone whom you can trust.
  22. Thanks guys. I've another question related to sugar. Other than sugar cane, are there any examples of plants or trees, with stem sap that contains much sugar, and that insects are seen feeding on the sap ?
  23. maybe it is a magazine, for medical equipment, or electronic tools.
  24. I read some of books on Darwin, usually in parts. I think Darwin and his cousin are elites, or belonging to the upper class. and at his time, the lower class might be increasing. perhaps there was some social pressure. It is said that Hitler is a fan of Charles Darwin. and might have communicated his admiration through letters. er..However I think I might have missed something because CD would have been dead by the time Hitler was around. sorry about that, Charles darwin related books are thick and I forgotten whose book I've read. I believe in evolution.
  25. I hope it isn't a strange topic. You know that european story of stone soup, a beggar took a stone and tricked an old lady into cooking up a pot of delicious soup with cabbage, carrots and stuff. Another version of the story, the beggar is replaced with three soldiers who return from war, who took a huge pot, cooked stone and water and tricked the villagers into adding ingredients. now, its is just a story, but the Moral of the story is odd to me. btw, I'm chinese, so there could be a slight difference in personal views. I feel the moral of the story is don't be gullible. but the moral of these story mentioned by some authors seem to praise the action of the trickers instead, by saying they helped the villagers. so any views on this ? sorry about that... link added http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/type1548.html http://www.stonesoupsociety.com/Stone-Soup-Fable.htm
