    National ID Card

The federal government can not directly mandate the states to do anything a particular way. States are run by the people of the State and they do not always agree with federal requirements for one reason or another. The bill that has been voted on in the Senate does not use the card as you envision it. It uses your state ID/license pending your state's compliance with federal guidelines...

It could but why should it? If it's just an ID card for ID only then there shouldn't be any test or price associated with it. That being the case though, state licenses should be acceptable ID with no need for a national ID. As it is the current proposal actually makes state issued licenses your national ID by requiring each state to comply with federal requirements for issueing licenses. There would be no federeal agency issuing federal ID cards. If your state didn't happen to meet those federal requirements then your license wiould not be valid identification to anyone but your own state. You could suddenly need to fly to another state for a sick relative or a death and find that your license is not recognized by the TSA at your own local airport. This propasl is another band aid approach to cover a symptom instead of finding a cure.
  3. Define slave labor. There are many people in the world that gladly work for wages that americans consider slave pay and yet they are appropriate wages for their own economy. Indian programmers make 1/5th the wages of american programmers but it is actually an upper class wage to them. FWIW though, I am opposed to protective tariifs, those which simply protect pricing. I am not opposed to prohibitive tariffs which are designed to completely shut out foreign supply of some produtcs. An example would be a billion percent tariff on Hezbollah or Al Qaeda goods. I support prohibitive tariffs.... This is consistant with my position on minimum wage. I should be free or have the liberty to negotiate my own price with the seller as opposed to having government interference. More government equals bigger government which is the best way to make anything less efficient.

That's news to me, can you support that claim? Would it comply with the varied drivers laws of all the states? Would one study the driver's manuals for all 50 states to prepare for the test to get one? Would a test be required at all to get one? I support state sovereignity and less federal regulation but that's just a personal preference so yes, I oppose federalism.
  5. The only issue being dodged is the failure to acknowledge that there is something fundamentally wrong with the economy in the first place if tariffs are needed to protect it. That is not an idealist view but one of a realist. If our economy needs tariffs then we need to fix the problem instead of using artificial inflation to patch the symptoms. To me tariffs are the same as giving someone with an infection a cold bath instead of the antibiotics that they need. Now, why can't you come up with a "real" example instead of some ficticious scenario that could never happen? Where is there a real need to force americans to face higher prices for foreign goods in order to protect inflated prices for those domestic goods that can't compete otherwise? I really can't think of any but if you can, proffer it and we'll discuss it.
  6. Why should the health of our economy depend on inflated prices for inferior goods? You sound like you're a proud union member.

Why isn't my state issued driver's license good enough to be an ID card recognized nationally? As a citizen I shouldn't need any more documents than I have now.
  8. Try coming up with a real world example, if you can. You know that there would never be any depression over watches from anywhere. Why should americans pay more for a swiss watch just so the american watch maker can sell his cheaper watch for more money? I ssay let the american watch maker build a better watch or get what his watch is really worth, less money.

  10. The "what if" game? no thanks. I do not support any protective tariffs. Let manufacturers compete on an even playing field.
  11. Why should americans pay anymore to buy foreign products than domestic products? If foreigners can build something better or cheaper and sell it cheaper then there is no reason to add any fees to it just because it wasn't made here. That's not my position, mine is stated above. A free market allows sellers and buyers to decide their own transactions without government punishing either by imposing tariffs, i.e. if the Swiss can build a better watch I should not have to pay them any extra for it so that they can pay a tariff on it.
  12. It's nice to see that someone else got it right
  13. Where did you get that from? Trade should be free as in no tariffs on anyone that wants to sell their wares here.
  14. I scored as a hard core Libertarian in the very top corner of the graph. I agree with all of the test statements.
  15. I don't think anyone knows for sure even though many will claim that they do. Hitler made plenty of remarks that could be interpretted to indicate that he was a christian but he was also smart enough to make people think that he was someone he wasn't in order to control them. You've asked something that no one can prove. I'd chalk it up as "we don't know" and move on....
  16. It's basically a simultaneous equation, solve accordingly.
  17. Yes it is but.... Suppose a call comes in to the U.S. from a known Al Qaeda operative outside the country. How can our own agents get a warrant to listen to the call before the call is over with? Should such phone calls from a known Al Qaeda operative, to possibly activate some terrorist action be protected, under the 4th Amendment or FISA? To what extent should we allow organizations like Al Qaeda to use our own Constitution against us so that they can successfully launch their operations against our own citizens?
  18. So far profiling seems to work pretty well for flights going out of Israel....
  19. I'll feel better about the guidelines when they include profiling....
  20. Another possible way or a simple, original and accurate way, which is it? Calculating the volume of anything involves measuring each of the parts accurately and summing them together. With all of the human body parts having so many different shapes it becomes difficult to measure them accurately and sum them together. There is certainly not a simple way to do this. If you want a simple, accurate measurement the bath is the way to go. If you simply want another possible way then use a seamstess' tape and measure up each part and sum them together or use swansont's suggestion to weigh and convert.
