  1. If my statement is correct, by which way do we observe "stuff" receding? Because observation is about "stuff", not about space. IOW we do not observe space expanding. What we do observe is stuff receding. How can you reconcile all of this?
  2. I agree that it is VERY misleading. You have explained why it is misleading. Now it remains to explain clearly what the expansion of space means. If a volume of space is simply a filled region, it means, as I naively understand, that when space expands there is a larger volume of space with more stuff inside it. Not that anything else happens.
  3. "Hazmat", I learned something today. Sorry not to be a fluent american-english speaker. Not even bothered to google the word, I thought it was a toponym. IOW I was wrong expressing myself to be right.
  4. I believe the image shows a fire, not a meteorological phenomenon. The policeman (or fireman) & the photographer are on the good side, with the wind back. The other ones at the horizon are in trouble.
  5. I am not a lawyer, but I guess that the fact that on one side there are some rules to follow and agree and on the other side there is access granted to a discussion platform, it is in fact a kind of private agreement between the Forum owner and the member, even if no money is involved. If this is so, then there are laws applying, which must be the laws of the U.K.
  6. Correct. http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/82809-free-speech-and-community-forums-etc/ Good point. Why semi-serious? It reminds me people considering that the Internet is not "real life". And AFAIK there are laws that control what can be stated in private rules and what cannot. Such as private arrangements, work conventions or even things one can and cannot do at his own home. In some countries, the State rules what you can and cannot do under the sheets of your bed. It would be surprising if there were no laws about what one can do and not do over the Internet.
  7. A common factor of large disasters is that there is not a single cause but an accumulation of causes. Sometimes human error combined with faulty equipment and wathever. I find no reason to kill that many people without any claim. If it was a hijack, it is a failure. Anyway I don't see anyone having won anything from this event. It is lose-lose situation.
  8. My thoughts go towards the 20 passengers who were employees of Freescale Semiconductor, a company based in Austin, Texas see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia_Airlines_Flight_370#Passengers and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freescale_Semiconductor A company that produces technology for transponders. Can that be a coincidence? As I go deeper, I am afraid many conspiracy theories will rise from this tragic incident. For example: One of the passenger was a China telecom executive who returned from Kuala Lumpur after signing the construction and maintenance agreement for future Sea-Me-We-5. Knowing that there are accusations from French operator Orange against NSA having tapped the Sea-Me-We-4, we have all the ingredients for a new James-Bond-Spying-Game-like story. Sources http://www.fiercetelecom.com/story/freescale-huawei-zte-employees-among-malaysia-airlines-flight-370-passenger/2014-03-10 http://www.fiercetelecom.com/story/nsa-taps-seamewe-4-cable-system-orange-threatens-suit/2014-01-02 Nevertheless, i don't think it was intended for the plane to crash. You don't kill hundred of people just like that. I am more tented to believe it is a failure of some sort. An accident.
  9. Is it possible that the airplane remained flying without any pilot alive?
  10. Left & up, next to the "font" window, there is also the interesting "special BBCode" button with funny effects Like this "Speech Bubble" Like this "Speech Bubble"
  11. Question: when the radars & other acars & gps system are turned off, does the pilot know where he is? How does he know his position and what direction is he heading to?
  12. Like 2010 top number 2?

  18. A young and an old pirate discuss at the bar. The young says: _"I'd like to hear from your experience, how did you lose your leg", showing the wooden leg of the old pirate. _It was on a day after a terrible fight with a Spanish battleship. Our vessel took fire, I jumped in the sea and a shark ate my leg. _"and what about your hand?" showing the silver hook at the place of the old pirate's hand _It happened on a day during a battle against 3 French battleships. A cannonball cut off my right hand. _"and what about your eye?" showing the black eye patch of the old pirate. -It was on this day when I looked above at our flag and a seagull dropped his thing into my eye. _But that is not enough to make you lose your eye! _well it was the first day after the doctor put the hook.on my arm.
  19. Sir Archibald sits near the fireplace, looks a lady Anna, his wife, and whispers: "My lady, tonight I want to do it like dogs". _O Archibald! Schocking! Please don't drink so much sherry and calm down. The next evening, Sir Archibald again: "tonight I want to do it like dogs" _Schocking Archibald! Don't you think about anything else. Never speak like that again, I beg you! After a few days: "I want to do it like dogs" _No, no, no! That is not under question. But I want to do it like dogs! Ok, Ok, if that pleases you so much. But promise me we'll go on a street where nobody knows us.
  20. you are wrong. moontan is right. Your reputation will increase soon.
  21. Interesting comment, you should start a thread on this. IMHO there are a lot of weird things in a periodic table. ----------------- (edit) As i see it, the table with its gaps is evidently a kind of projection of some "multidimensional object" upon a rectangular plane surface. Like a map of the world under a Goode Homolosine projection. It may be that it is not possible to make an accurate projection of the "object" without obtaining some distortions or gaps. This below alternative table shows the problem, at least to me who understands nothing about chemistry but understands something about graphical representations: Personally, I like the Physicist's Periodic Table of Timothy Stowe in the link below. http://jeries.rihani.com/symmetry/index6.html
  22. Hum, have I killed this thread? Please introduce yourself, have a look at the previous 148 pages.
  23. Good work Ed. Well done. Welcome everybody.
  24. "to think" is not enough. what one has to do is to ponder*. *cogitate. BTW who is that Bad Scientist who gave you a minus point? That is not a great "welcome".
