  1. So then you have a choice. Either accept the overwhelming evidence that man evolved or claim we were created in the image of a god. Evolution has the evidence, creationism does not Either accept the science or not. Ask away but perhaps start another thread. Rainbows are not dangerous, a child can create one with a little knowledge of physics, no gods or promises required.
  2. Not my opinion, the opinion by the overwhelming majority of the scientific community. An easier one and you can try this at home. Genesis 9:12-15 states: “And God said, 'This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth." Also wrong, we do not need a god to create a rainbow and it is nothing to do with promises. Light, colour, refraction and how prisms work are well understood now. You can buy one on line for 5 bucks, set it up shine a light at it and make a rainbow, I am pretty certain you are not god and you do not have to make any promises.
  3. What we call ourselves is not what I am getting at, the Bible says we were created, we were not created we evolved from ancestral primates, the Bible made it up/got it wrong.
  4. I have no idea what you are talking about. Atheists do no such thing, atheists just answer the question. "Do you think there is a god?" with "No." How humans evolved is a scientific issue, there is a mountain of data to support the fact we evolved and that data was provided by naturalists, geologists, anthropologists, zoologists and paleontologists (to name a few) over the last 180 years or so. That story bears no resemblance whatsoever to the creation stories in the Bible.
  5. Can you address my two examples first?
  6. Yes I did. I gave you periods of our human understanding of the universe. You need one, how about two big ones? We, humans, Homo sapiens evolved, there was no creation. Our star, the sun forms 99% of our solar system. Astronomers are observing Stella formation in our own galaxy and elsewhere via Webb including the Cigar galaxy. There was and is no creation.
  7. If we assume Revelation was written around 100CE just to make the numbers neat then we are talking just shy of 2000 years of learning. So in terms of Cosmology and Astronomy we have about 500 years, Biology a bit less, depends where you decide to go from. Geology from the late 18th century. Pretty much all of that knowledge accrued over a few hundred years contradicts statements in the Bible. Statements about life on earth, humans, disease, mental illness the earth itself and the celestial bodies.
  8. I adore those little furry bundles of fun.
  9. And Chemistry!
  10. Other animals cry also including baby chicks to be fed and penguins in huge colonies where parents can pick out their cry. Crying in babies/ young has an Evolutionary advantage.
  11. Thanks. +1. Hand on heart I have a low level on this. I will keep reading and maybe start a thread on the parts I do not understand. (Long thread!)
  12. Even more so if the Universe is infinite. No problem, to a non physicist (me) this is all pretty confusing. I thought I had a handle on the CMBR but having read several wiki articles this morning it is clear that I don't. Probably more of an idea now at least I thought the photons from last scattering was the CMBR we see/detect today?
  13. Science has found the answer to lot more questions that were not known by the Bible writers and we all have free access to them. Available to everyone not just atheists.
  14. Thousand. The CMBR event was all over the entire universe in all directions.
  15. Yes. "Evolution has purpose and here are all the papers I have not read to prove it." As most did not exist.
  16. Astronomical observations are limited by the speed of light and the expansion of the universe. Even travelling at the speed of light, some objects are now travelling much faster than that relative to us so the light they are producing now will never reach us. For galaxies that is currently about 280 million years after the BB but let's see what the JWST can do in the next couple of years. Gravitational lensing may give it a leg up and push it back further. The CMBR is from about 380,000 years after the BB and there are also BAO.
  17. Titles, spacing and length are the usual giveaways. When asked for references they produce a list of tentative, barely relevant or just do not exist citations.
  18. My mum always said that scientists said the moon would be colonised in 20 years, so that claim would have been in the early 60s. Perhaps on the back of JFK. They are a bit behind schedule but a few decades is fine. Science and Engineering is steady process. Mistakes will be made along the way.
  19. Yes he was fond of safe cracking too. Scientists like Dirac, Einstein and Feynman were just very special individuals, we were very lucky to have them when we did. I have still not read that, I need to. I have read parts of his biography. I did not encounter him till the shuttle disaster.
  20. They were not given those names till the second century, by men. They were just men, church fathers, intellectuals, scholars.
  21. Tensor calculus came from the likes of Gibbs, Ricci and Hamilton and Riemann not Planck. As suggested, making up a completely new character and fitting him into the events of WW2 would be better. Rather than taking the most famous Scientist of the 20th century if not of all time and distorting his contribution. As Richard Feynman said, the Manhattan project was more engineering than science. In fact Feynman would have been a better candidate, he did play a part and he started out as fairly low in the ranks and moved up a rung or two. The concept of Relativity was discussed as far back as Galileo. Poincaré and Lorentz discussed elements of modern Relativity also before 1905 as the latter was responsible for the "transform which bears his name.
  22. Late to the party on this. "In his own image" means like him, that's it. If that means something else, then Yhwh made yet another really crappy job of imparting a message. It is worth mentioning the two creation stories in Genesis where Yhwh has two characters.
  23. So now you have changed your mind again? The Guardian article mentioned "What is life" and Watson and Crick, Schrödinger and his cat. Nothing to do with OOL or directional Evolution. This may be easier if you state explicitly what you think is going on with life on earth. Are you unhappy with TOE? Darwin? Dawkins? Just lay it out.
  24. It's an interesting question. In the UK there are certain jobs you cannot do if you have a record, working with children being one of them. There are plenty of cases where young men (usually male) get involved in violent gang crime, do time then turn their lives around and work with youngsters with problems, who may be canon fodder for street gangs and criminals. They visit correction centres for kids who.ate on the brink of change now or look forward to doing some real adult jail time. Those individuals possess qualities I would like in a human to work at my company. Learned morals, ethics and humanity the hard way. Usually the academic side is lacking but that can be worked on, you cannot teach character. https://www.swlondoner.co.uk/life/25082020-youngsters-lives-matter-how-a-former-gang-member-turned-his-life-around-and-is-now-giving-back
