Why do religious people keep trying to invent a conflict between belief and Science?
I agree, it is ongoing. Why wouldn’t life at the moment matter? I was reading “Maverick Scientist” and there is this debate there. It says, “to be a scientist you just have to do science.” A math problem is a math problem no matter what you believe. I just think anything people are different (physically or beliefs can be manipulated to control you. I don’t have the source but it said young children would play in kindergarten no matter what race. But as they got older something (the study didn’t know why) changed. I don’t mean to bring up race. But we are believing migrants are costing us money and they don’t have the rights of citizens. I am just using the most current example. Maybe you heard this somewhere. There are biases on everyone, but science and religion aren’t against each other. It is person against person.

Tariffs inadvertently reduce carbon footprint?
In Trump’s first term he improved relations between the Middle East. He made deals with all the countries surrounding Iran. Isn’t the tariffs just an extension of the prisoner’s dilemma? Apply tariffs while the U.S. economy is strong and tarrif every country. Those countries could work to together and retaliate, but with every country that makes a deal the U.S.gets more bargaining power. Still think Trump is dumb? Every time a country makes a deal the stock markets will do better. However I am disappointed that DOGE is dismantling government programs because this money could have went to fund them. I don’t know if the tariffs will work. But the money would probably go into the military instead of academics and healthcare. But as it relates to conserving resources. We probably only need an eighth of the stuff we buy. What if Trump is right; a Barbie cost $60 so you have 2 instead of 20. But you just balanced the market for all toy makers. Of all countries.

Tariffs inadvertently reduce carbon footprint?
Well in response to capitalism do you guys agree it is the best system? It doesn’t mean it’s fair. Some people will always have advantages. But at least the average guy has a chance. I know this comes from fiction but some writer but it in the Star Trek books to reflect the same problems of capitalism. That is that Captain Kirk could not understand how poverty was eliminated in captain Picard’s time. Kirk couldn’t understand how the resources to build the enterprise with no payments existed. How would you motivate and control a country without capitalism? And still have freedom? But I don’t think Elon and Trump are now motivated by money. I don’t know what Trumps goal is. Why is he changing a working economy? It’s not to conserve resources. I think Elon like Trump actually think they are saving America. Have a drop in population go father 14 kids. I know CharonY didn’t think that Trump wasn’t smart enough to ruin other countries economies by weaponizing trade. I believe Warren Buffet commented on this a few days ago. But both Elon and Trump are extremely smart. I know Trump looks like an idiot on the news. He is a genius. He has been manipulating people and money to get what he wants his entire life. The problem is he can now manipulate the world’s economy.

Tariffs inadvertently reduce carbon footprint?
Back to the minimalist; Trump said kid will have 2 dolls instead of 30. It is my hypothesis that conservation is not his goal but the goal is to weaken other countries economies. Could China support itself by trading every where but the U.S.? America is not made stronger by making more products than other countries. The only reason I can think of for major changes in the economy would be if it were going to fail. I mean if mass consumption of products was going to fail.

Can science fix politics (split from Messages to the president...)
Why are we studying it if we can’t fix it? Why would we ask the President questions if we are just going to say things are wrong but oh well science can’t fix politics? Is a scientist supposed to discover a drug then drug companies price it too high. So the scientist says not my fault, scientists make drugs not sell them. This is bad. I think after Trump’s presidency there will be limits on how federal funding is controlled. The science of economics to repair the country.

Can science fix politics (split from Messages to the president...)
Well I think a post by MigL stated that the forum has become too political. We should do science. The problem is the politics is effecting everyone and I don’t think science can fix it. If you could stop s Trump with science it would be an act of treason. Wired magazine released the names of DOGE members and were threatened. Science is for problems not political problems. Cure a disease fixed problem…still infinite problems to solve. The Great Courses has a class on verbal judo. I briefly read a description where it said that in intense situations logical arguments don’t work. So when you are in a meeting with Trump, saying tariffs will complicate a working world economy, will not make him admit that too much change to a working system is a bad idea. Does anyone think that science can fix politics?

Messages to the president...
What was last Thursday? I can’t keep track of these things. and… Mr. President: When did the Department of Education become a collection agency and not exist to give grants and loans? (Now instead of loan forgiveness the new policy is to enforce loan repayments.)
-
Messages to the president...
Dear Mr. President, I see you figured out cutting funding is more powerful than legislative and laws. Why did the tariff formulas derived by a 7th grader? How do tariffs make tax revenue while the U.S. citizens pay the tariff? Why can’t any who is in the United States lead peaceful protests? You hold the power of one of the most powerful economies, why did you manipulate it to increase your own power?

A natural experiment on the effect of herpes zoster vaccination on dementia
Thanks CharonY for the above and beyond explanation 👍

A natural experiment on the effect of herpes zoster vaccination on dementia
So you are saying pain does not result from the body fighting viruses or its own immune system? In school the Ms society told us ms was painless. But I have been told by a person that had ms there is random pain. They said it feels like you are being electrocuted. I don’t know the credibility of “a person who gets shingles does not get ms.” You say it increases the chances. But I post this here because that is what interests me about shingles and other neurological diseases. But maybe instead of calling shingles a cure to ms, maybe those that have recovered from shingles means they can recover from the virus that causes ms. Again I haven’t been able to find such a study. The person who told me probably was told by a specialist in neurology. But a misunderstanding is possible.

A natural experiment on the effect of herpes zoster vaccination on dementia
I hypothesize that since shingles attacks the nerves the sores and pain is the nerves defense reaction. People with multiple sclerosis have described themselves as “being electrically shocked.” I don’t know if the “shocked pain” happens in other nerve illnesses, but as this study shows there is a relationship between 2 nerve disorders in that a shingles shot prevents both shingles and dementia. But the claim I’ve only heard about is that people who get shingles don’t get ms.
-
A natural experiment on the effect of herpes zoster vaccination on dementia
What if there were benefits to getting shingles. I knew someone who had multiple sclerosis and somewhere they read of a study that said people who have had shingles don’t get ms. I cannot find such a study, but this would have been 35+ years ago. But you mention the immune system and inflammation. That is what ms is the immune system attacking the nerves of the spine. Maybe shingles is the nerves defending themselves?

Public Perceptions on Nuclear Power
Don’t mind me I have just read too much Bruce Schenier books. I am not claiming the survey is biased, but is the reason to collect it just to see how educated people would vote or is just to see how those people answer to influence them. By the way I am uneducated in nuclear physics. But you posted this in politics. Is the decision for scientific answers or data. That is using scientific facts to aid in a decision or do you wish to see what is the most important facts to a scientist? I’m beginning to hate politics. But would you say that someone with all the data you collected could use it to manipulate the scientific opinion in their favor? Trump could say that it is clean and abundant. We need to build 20. Biden could say the mining is destruct full and nuclear waste is an issue. So we take all the scientific data and use what parts that fit our purposes. I’m not saying the survey is biased. Scientists would probably give you the reasons we should or shouldn’t. I’m just pointing out the fact that often time scientists’ facts are misused.

Pro’s and Con’s of Elon Musk
Well the part about Musk looking to buy Russian rockets and then deciding to build his own is from the Walter Isaacson biography. Im just saying that Musk gets things done in the private sector but is not good in government. The goal isn’t always what saves money. But Musk isn’t always in it for money. That is not me saying that. He invested the PayPal money into other businesses. I don’t know what motivates him. I don’t know why he wants to dismantle existing government agencies. As for your theory of planning a recession, maybe. I’m not sure about the martial law. The news isn’t worth watching. I’m now critical of Trump and Elon. They know the middle class is concerned with good jobs and being able to afford a home. They didn’t explain how a world wide recession improves the economy. I say world wide because the global economy will be effected imho.

Pro’s and Con’s of Elon Musk
Well we think Elon is a jerk because of how he treats laborers. Random firing may work by creating competition in his business. But government has a social side. I am impressed by SpaceX. Elon was going to buy a Russian rocket until they kept screwing with him and jacked up the price. It was bold to start a company that made rockets. Elon the scientist I respect. I expect him to have a few quarks. He is arrogant and demanding but that is to be expected. The problem is that he shouldn’t be in our government. Firing hard works and breaking services and protections of already established government programs isn’t cutting waste. I don’t like it. My instructor once told me about a NASA engineer who was laid off. He couldn’t find work because he was over qualified. So he worked as a janitor mopping floors. He was brilliant and that is the best job he could get.

What is DEI, and why is it dividing America?
Well I think making changes to the way the U.S. economy works for a complete overhaul could mean more manufacturing but it can also fail and cause disaster. But every time Trump changes the U.S. economy he forces the rest of the world’s countries to change theirs.
-
What is DEI, and why is it dividing America?
I stand corrected. Maybe the problem is white Christian men. I don’t know how it started and if it is just certain leaders; could be better could be worse but white men determine the course of the Country. Billy Graham regretted not participating in the civil rights movement. I guess America First makes us stronger financially, but what do we lose? As a Christian money shouldn’t be your master, so why would we create a country, that is a machine, that is based on money? Not that anyone knows an alternative to this system. Money is not the problem. The problem greed in an attempt to make America great is going to lose us money and disrupt the world.

What is DEI, and why is it dividing America?
Well I didn’t listen far in the book yet. But in the book “Code Girls,” the U.S. military recruited women. They placed puzzles in the news paper and recruited on women’s colleges. Ai could do that. And it would find 2 polar opposite views. I would want to hear from someone who works there. I only saw what a tourist at the space center sees. I am interested in the Hidden Figures book just to see how these women got their opportunity.

Public Perceptions on Nuclear Power
I read the survey. It seems simple enough. But I get the feeling your goal is to see my view, to persuade me to decide on the option you want me to believe. The topic is nuclear power plants but that is because those in the forum would know about and think scientifically. This would serve to distract the survey taker with scientific evidence. But we both know there is debate over scientific facts. We can read reports on how it solves the energy crisis or another that says it’s dangerous. Two stories. Fake news. Is you study looking for a way to control social media posts? A kind of psychology game theory?

What is DEI, and why is it dividing America?
Well back to the original point of diversity. Those in charge knew that women were smart and that includes black women. I listened to the prologue of “Hidden Figures.” (No spoilers please.) But the accomplishment wasn’t being a computer figuring space trajectories, instead I am interested how NASA found out they were gifted. It would be like the backup quarterback sitting on the bench while the starter quarterback throw 4 interceptions. I don’t know if NASA discriminates because I don’t work there. But they seem to take talent wherever they find it. I have read that they too go through firing cycles. But again I think it is not the current generation of white Christian men who discriminate. Just because 2 white Christian billionaires are in charge doesn’t mean we are all discriminating minorities.

Artemis vs Apollo (split from What is DEI, and why is it dividing America?)
Sensei, this is how the U.S. government works too. Something as easy as a 15 hard drive can’t be replaced. I worked in a graphics shop many years back and we had a $15,000 copier. The only trouble was that all the graphics we made were on the pc. It would take another $7000 for the computer interface. We never got that interface so it just sat there. You and me aren’t allowed to change the hard drive, but the counter intelligence agency can grant all access to Edward Snowden.

What is DEI, and why is it dividing America?
I agree. As we learned in Soc 101 from the start people starved when others prospered. I tried looking it up but there was a word for the lower class rising up to crush the upper class. I don’t think it ever worked. From the things I have watched on tv and read about early American history, I arrive at the conclusion that threatening a man’s job caused much racism. It start on the railroads where if you didn’t work they would replace you. It continues to this day with the border. Maybe more BS but it is observation not statistical.

What is DEI, and why is it dividing America?
Well I would say NASA is a place that is already diverse and doesn’t need DEI. Where DEI is needed is primary schools for mentally and physically challenged kids. Now that the department of education is in trouble this may change. Some kids need 5 or more aides. There is always going to be corruption in the workplace. But DEI can also discriminate. The problem is not white Christian males. Those are hard workers who are on your side. The problem is that government is all about money. Biden gave it away and now Trump destroys agencies to save 2%. And the agencies provide more benefits than they cost. The problem is not DEI. Instead it is a class system of billionaires vs middle class.

Artemis vs Apollo (split from What is DEI, and why is it dividing America?)
I’m only kidding. I am making fun of the fact DEI is extreme in the case of specifically putting a women on the moon just because it never happened before. I do see a need because I don’t believe women were as astronauts till 1983. I do not object to a woman on the moon. I just making fun of the fact it costs so much money. Actually I am very interested in space. I wouldn’t want to be an astronaut though. It would be like being in a submarine 6 months. It isn’t like Star Trek yet. And it is extremely dangerous. NASA is great for learning and exploring but they too have safety and expense issues. They launched the Challenger shuttle after it had 6 ft ice sickles on it. i don’t like the focus to be the first woman on the moon. She is part of the mission and the focus should be building on the moon. The current NASA is very diverse. And if you go to Kennedy Space Center and look at the Wall of Heroes, you will be impressed by how qualified they are. So I see why I made fun of the price tag to go to the moon. But in my lifetime NASA has always been diverse. The fact that it is so dangerous makes it hard. The lunar lander has just landed on its top and the SpaceX rocket 🚀 exploded. Have you ever heard of ideas for a space elevator? Could such an elevator climb so high then fall to the other side of the sphere?
