http://arxiv.org/abs/1010.4312 Look at the attached PDF. It has the pictures they took of the galaxy. Galaxy is now 13.1 billion years old. The baby picture that European Southern Observatory (ESO) took of it is when the universe had been expanding for only 600 million years. ESO is great. Somewhere down in Chile. They have done some terrific things. Like make a timestop movie of stars orbiting the black hole at the center of our galaxy. Like over 10 to 20 years. They see in the infrared, need to because for z=8.6 the wavelengths have been stretched out by a factor of 9.6. What used to be visible light has gone way infrared. I hope someone finds mo…

From the point of view of an external observer far from a blackhole, spacetime look like streached. I readed that the time dimension is dilated and at the event horizon it is infinetly dilated. I concluded that the spaces dimensions must be infinitely contracted to conserve the canstancy of the speed of light. Am i correct ? Also I readed that the time dimension become spacelike passed the event horizon so the spaces dimension should become timelike and there are 3 spaces dimensions so there are timelike dimension pass the event horizon. What do you think about that reasonning? I also found that paper that speak of 3D time http://arxiv.org/PS_cache/quant-ph/pdf/0510/…

Well How about a hypothesis. If those who say the universe is expanding beleive so because the matter seems to be moving away from us, but they do not take into account the destructive forces of black holes that swallow up most matter then their theories could be wrong. I was watching the History channel show that said there is a massive black hole at the center of most galaxies. If this is true, we must Think. What are those black Holes doing? They are swallowing up matter. Galaxies spin in a circular motion.. like the motion of the black hole at it's center. I submit to you that every galaxy is being eaten/swallowed up from within itself.. from its black hole i…

i did a little research and i know there are four dimensions length, width, hieght, and time, i am still not sure can you help me out here what i also know wormholes are bends but can block holes just be longer i mean we have never went in one so that is a possibility that it is just a long wormhole

i saw a documentary lately that fascinated me it said that time travel to the future is something very real and achievable proven by einstein theorie of general relativity it also said that time travel to the past was a lot harder then i researched and found that if we go to the quantum level we would find that an idea that occures to us many times in life may be real . there are different dimensions parallele ones . in other words i exist in different dimensions and in each i am different due to what i changed for example : in one i am a business graduate in another i didnt go to college. now here is the catch if this is true and they say it is due to experiments on p…

We are only able to see so much of the universe. Can we alter this?... Say we built a rocket telescope and fired it directly toward a specific area of space... say the hubble deep field area. We get this rocket going about .99c and then let it coast for a day or a week... however long it takes to get a good exposure. Then we turn the rocket around and have a look at the photo... what would we see? Would we see farther than the observable universe we experience on Earth? (since distance has contracted in the direction of travel) Would red-shifting be (to some degree) reversed by our velocity toward the light we are collecting?

I'm looking for some good books that will help give me an understanding about the beginning of the universe and how it is today. I've only read "Why E=MC2" by Brian Cox and was look for more. Suggestions appreciated!

I am intrigued by the Dawn mission to Vesta and Ceres---the two largest in the asteroid belt. Ceres is now rated "dwarf planet", diameter ~1000 km, estimated large amount of underground water. Dawn uses solar-powered Xenon ion drive. Dawn and Vesta are now both roughly the same distance from the sun (about 2 AU) and "running neck and neck" at roughly the same speed around 20 km/second. Vesta is slowly overtaking and Dawn is thrusting to speed up, so that it can exactly match speeds. It is now about 0.1 AU from Vesta. Ion propulsion is very gradual. It will take 9 to 10 months before Dawn is in orbit around Vesta. The first "science orbit" will be Augu…

The technical article was just posted. It confirms earlier findings and gives more detail. http://arxiv.org/abs/1009.5733 ====quote from 1009.5733 abstract === "...The combined data set strongly confirms the 5.37-day, 12.9-day, 3.15-day, and 67-day planets previously announced by Bonfils et al. (2005), Udry et al. (2007), and Mayor et al (2009). The observations also indicate a 5th planet in the system, GJ 581f, a minimum-mass 7.0 M_Earth planet orbiting in a 0.758 AU orbit of period 433 days and a 6th planet, GJ 581g, a minimum-mass 3.1 M_Earth planet orbiting at 0.146 AU with a period of 36.6 days. The estimated equilibrium temperature of GJ 581g is 228 K, plac…

I got an idea after have watched a documentary of the expanding universe. The scientist said that dark energy took hold of universe after 5 billion years after the big bang and thus the universe expands faster and faster. To me it sound more like they don't know why it is expanding but needed a hypotes to explain it. So they invented dark energy. But what if Dark Energy acctually is Gravity? If the universe was a football and the big bang a foot. Wouldn't that do the same? If you put 10 billion years force behind a kickof a fotball.. wouldn't it first rise a bit and then go down and accelerate cause of gravity before it hitts the ground.. Especially when taking in…

this is an extension thread to my FIRST CONTACT thread so if you havn't read that please dont reply to this. anyways, a lot of people say that there is no intelligent civilizations in the universe besides us. the question is what makes a species an intelligent civilization?

The beginning of all physical objects was not a physical event because it does not occur at any particular time. There are two reasons for this: 1. Physical objects began when Time began. However, Time did not begin as there was no event prior to Time that would announce, or could present, a start. 2. It is physically possible to reach the beginning of the universe - at ANY time whatsoever. By travelling at the speed of light - and some objects can do that - we become one with the conditions present at the beginning of the world.

I recently read about the Information Theory and i think it said something about how information cannot be destroyed. But if matter falls into a black hole, doesn't it become wiped out from existance? Also black holes seem to be breaking the Law of Conservation too. I remember something about the string theory involved but i need some clarification here please.

I was reading about scenarios for the possible fate of the universe and I learned about the Big Crunch scenario. I learned that in this scenario, the expansion of the universe slows to a halt and reverses. Now, I know that space and time are one fabric (space-time.) This makes me wonder if during this scenario time reverses as the universe contracts. If so, would the events that are happening now eventually occur again in reverse during the process of the Big Crunch?

There are now 6 known double quasars. http://hoggresearch.blogspot.com/2010/07/two-new-binary-quasars.html A July 23, 2010 blog entry: "...Given that there are only four binary quasars known previously, this was a pretty good day's work." A quasar is already a pretty interesting object, but having a binary pair of quasars going around each other adds additional zest. Here is an earlier article on binary quasars: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/02/100203131413.htm A binary quasar is two supermassive black holes, each radiating a vast power output, that orbit each other. They can result when two galaxies (each with a central supermassive black hole) …

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/08/books/08book.html "Grand Design" is co-written with a younger guy, Leonard Mlodinow. It has about 100 pages of text, filled out with a lot of color illustrations, cartoons, and such. The NYTimes reviewer found the text superficial, even for pop physics. The review says the real news about the book is how "disappointingly tinny and inelegant" it is. The book is selling extremely well. #1 at Amazon.com. One reason may be what science writer Tim Ferris calls "Godmongering". Science books that raise issues about God tend to grab attention and may sell better on that account. This time Hawking-Mlodinow play the "God is unneces…

How could everything in the very early universe occupy such a small volume? Is it because particles are described as point-like meaning on there own they take up no space or volume? Please help.

Hi all! I have a little bit of homework I need to do, however i'm trying to make a good impression early on in the year to my teacher, (i've alrerady asked him bout angular momentum!). I wondered how comets form, can I have a semi-technical explanation please? I have searched on the web but most places just say " Oooo they come from the Kuiper belt or the Oort cloud" which isn't particularly helpful. Also if you have the time how do asteroids form?? I think this one is a bit more simple though. THANKS!!

The Big Bang is a theory that I have been wanting to subscribe to, but it is its origin that I have difficulty grasping. It claims to occur out of 'nothing,' but to me that sounds like a more scientific explanation that could metaphorically equate to God's creation. Was the Big Bang the beginning of space as well? It seems space would have had to already be there in order for all this matter to spread out in. Or was space born within the explosion with matter already born inside of it? I suppose it would make sense that the universe would have to expand from a particle, but it seems that there would of have to be space there for that particle to emerge in and even time wo…
