Experiments

Fun science experiments you've done that you'd like to share with the world.

  1. In this experiment, I made some chromyl chloride, a very volatile compound of chromium, which forms an orange/brown gas. It is really weird, thinking of this vapor being a metal-compound! This stuff has some very interesting properties. Have a look at the page, I made about this compound: http://woelen.scheikunde.net/science/chem/exps/cro2cl2/index.html The chemicals, needed for this experiment, are quite common, and I expect that many people, who read this and who do some serious home chemistry, can easily repeat this experiment. Be careful though, chromyl chloride is a carcinogen. Avoid breathing any of the vapor.

Hey! I am doing an experiment of electrolysis with initially a copper strip attached to the negative terminal of a battery. A strip of aluminium is then attached to the positive terminal and both electrodes are placed in a copper sulfate solution. My observations are only that oxygen gas is formed on the aluminium electrode while in the solution, but no real reaction occurs. When i switch the copper strip to the positive terminal and the aluminium strip to the negative terminal I see that copper has been deposited on the aluminium. What are the reactions for these two options????

I have a nice compound, niobium pentachloride, which can be used for making snow. It is volatile, but also easily sublimes and condenses. It easily goes from the gas-state to the solid state and as such can form snow. This effect is really neat and it is something I want to share with you: http://woelen.scheikunde.net/science/physics/exps/nbcl5/index.html

you`ve seen Magicians use this stuff on stage etc... it looks like a sudden bright yellow Flash often from their hands during certain tricks, you Can buy this paper but it`s Very expensive and you only get a small amount. for this experiment you`ll need a flask or beaker with a lid. 50ml of 98% sulphuric acid. 50ml of 70% Nitric acid. several sheets of 2 ply toilet paper. a pyrex casserole dish with lid. a glass stir rod. a good 50g of Sodium Carbonate (washing soda). either a bucket of water or access to fresh running water. the obvious safety goggles, apron/lab coat, gloves. in the flask put your 50ml of nitric acid, then add the sulphuric acid gently…

I have a 2 part question here. First of all we added 1cm^3 light petrolium to 3 test tubes. Then we added 1cm^3 of aqueous chlorine, bromine and iodine solution to each tube respectivly. Then we shake the test tubes to mix the solution. This ended up in the solutions seperating into layers. No prob. The questions are What is light petroleum, and I assume they seperate into layers due to the different denisty. Which is at the top? Has light petoleum got a greater denity than Cl2(aq), Br2(aq) and I2(aq) ?

  9. For a school science project I'm testing the solvent powers of various cola products (and one non-cola carbonated soda). Finding out whether there's a difference between diet & non-diet, etc. I've tried to set up the experiment as fairly as possible: I have a set of old pennies ranging from 1950s to 1960s and I'm going to weigh them beforehand on a scale that's accurate to 10 milligrams, leave the coins in various liquids (out of Coca Cola, Coke Zero - sugar free, Fanta - cola free, and purified water as a control) for 8 hours, then weigh them again afterwards. I'll use identical glasses, keep them in the same place (out of the sun to ensure that the heat doesn'…

  11. Hi, I'm doing some scientists-in-school program and I need some ideas for a short-term (~1day) intermediate experiments that are fun for the kids and can excite them to science. I've thought of some ideas but I can't seem to find simple protocols for them. I don't have a lot of time on my hands to design a new protocol, so I'm seeking some help for those who may have experiences in these. 1. Simple fragrance extraction from flowers 2. Ag photo development 3. Creating some polymer/biomaterials for artificial limbs 4. Oohbleck (I got this from some website) - which can exhibit different surface properties depending on impact Hope someone can help. Any other…

  14. i did an experiment on electrolysis on various substances. two substances were copper sulpahte which gave an ammeter reading of 0.87A and sodium chloride which gave an ammeter reading of 1.25A. i have a question which says.... suggest a reason why copper (II) sulphate and sodium chloride do not give the same ammeter readings. i would appreciate your help. thanks in advance

Alright, please bear with me as I attempt to detail my proposed method of synthesizing geraniol (3,7-dimethylocta-2Z,6-dien-1-ol). Keep in mind that this is my first multistep synthesis, and with only one semester of organic. First, react ethene with bromine in carbon tetrachloride, yielding 1,2-dibromoethane. Second, react 1,2-dibromoethane with an acetylide anion, yielding 4-bromobut-1-yne. **Now this is where I have my first question...as the first molecules of the product form, would the unreacted acetylide ions displace the other bromine on the 4-bromobut-1-yne.** Let's assume that if we use a stoiciometric ratio of reactants: Third, hydrogenate the…

This is a cool experiment I did with ammonia and bromine vapor. The reagents for this experiment are very easy to obtain or to make: http://woelen.scheikunde.net/science/chem/exps/NH3+Br2/index.html Bromine vapor can easily be made if you have a bromide (which can be purchased without problem). If you repeat this experiment, be careful with the bromine vapor, that vapor is very toxic. Follow the safety warnings on the webpage.

Yet another experiment I want to share with you. I made some very nice crystals with a dendritic structure. These are easy to make: http://woelen.scheikunde.net/science/chem/exps/crystals/index.html Keep in mind that the used chemical (ammonium chromate, or ammonium dichromate + ammonia) most likely is a carcinogen. Avoid inhalation of fine dust!

Ok, most everybody knows that the cheap mischmetal used in firestarters is pretty much an alloy of Ce and Fe, along with trace amounts of Mg, Mn, etc. My goal is to extract the Cerium in a salt for from this. I have looked around, and found that Cerium Oxalate is not water soluble. I know that Iron Oxalate is quite water soluble from my mineral-collecting hobby (oxalic acid is used to turn ferroferrous dirt deposits in quarts in to iron oxalate, which then goes into solution, leaving the quartz spotless). Therefore, I should be able to have Cerium Oxalate precipitate out of a solution of the dissolved mischmetal by the addition of oxalic acid. My question is, should I ju…

I`ve just been experimenting with a Halate cell, in particular Calcium Chloride. 80ml of saturaled calcium chloride was added to 350ml of water and 50ml of 20% HCl, and a pinch (1/4 spatula) of potassium dichromate added. I`m keeping the cell started as acidic so so Calcium hydroxide doesn`t form and insulate the carbon electrode. anyway, the Cl2 smell was really bad, so I added a little H2O2, instantly the soln turned Purple/black, Very strange I thought but let it continue. slowly over a period of roughly 2 mins the soln got lighter and lighter purple leaving an Aqua colored soln and perfectly clear. now there`s a purple PPT floating on the top that will be …

The following is a really nice experiment with a deep green, which I seldom see in fireworks displays. http://woelen.scheikunde.net/science/chem/exps/barium_bromate/index.html You really should see the fire itself. The camera images capture some of the green, but in reality it is much brighter and more saturated. The camera has a difficult job, capturing the beautiful color, due to overexposure (and I cannot adjust its aperture in video-mode ). But anyway, if you have the chems, then you should definitely try this yourself. You can use crude potassium bromate and cheap potteries barium carbonate for making the barium bromate, as described in the thread on mak…
