I had a container with bleach, and at the end of a tube bleach has been slowly dripping out. I discovered a small puddle of bleach and lots of white crystals around the edgs and in the middle. Does anybody know what these are?

As the title says, I'm really desperate to know the answer. Please write why it is either 'salt', 'sweet' or 'tap water'. I have been searching for the answer on the internet but failed to find it. I am trying to meet a deadline for my assignment so fast response would be very appreciated. Please help.

an Idea just occured to me after finding an old amplfier in my junk box, I hooked it all up and it worked lovely, I attatched a large coil (several thousand turns of copper wire) to the input and could hear all sorts of sounds from my mobile phone to my mouse when it moved, even the digits changing on my watch when placed inside this loop. I`m now wondering if it would be possible to listen to a displacement reaction of a ferro-magnetic substance in a test tube, IE/ I drop a peice of magnessium into a soln of Iron Sulphate, Iron metal will appear out of the soln. since Iron is a magnetic metal, could this be heard as it appears in a magnetic field, much like the p…

I am a high school science teacher and I have a repertoire of interesting and spectacular demonstrations that I incorporate into my lessons. Colleagues, I want to start a thread that titles some of the more memorable demoes you have encountered or conducted and could be demonstrated to Year 11s and Year 12s who are focussed on chemistryor physics Some of the ones I'm listing below are now not permitted in high schools in Western Australia. 1. Plasma torch(my all time favourite - however CS2 is "banned" now) 2. Platinum Candle 3. Instant implosion of sealed 44 gallon drumwith boiling water in it 4. touchpowder 5. Acetylene/Oxygen balloon bomb 6. white phosphor…

Right now I'm in my school trying to measure the rate of reaction of propanone and iodine... I've added sulphuric acid as a catalyst and even though I'm waiting patiently for something to happen the colorimeter keeps recording the same absorbance... (I've been running my first experiment with no success for 45 minutes already..) I have to do 5 different experiments varying the molarity of iodine and propanone like this: iodine propane 0.01 0.01 0.01 0.02 0.01 0.03 0.02 0.01 0.03 0.01 Am I waiting in vain? what d…

I'm currently trying to obtain red iron oxide by electrolysis in NaCl solution, but i'm slightly skeptical on what ive actually obtained. Heres how I'm doing it.... First of all I connected a 9v battery to crocadile clips and placed them in the solution and identified the cathode as it was bubbling a great deal more than the other. To this I attached a carbon rod and to the other an iron nail. I left this for a few hours and when I looked at it a minute ago there was a viscous dark brown/green precipitate floating on top. At the bottom and covering the nail, a layer of black precipitate has formed. I would imagine that the bottom layer is due to the decomposi…

I've been using an online solubility chart and it's fine when looking at Nitrates, Sulphate, Chlorides, etc. However, does anyone know of a larger compilation that includes other ions such as borates?

I'm very interested in electrochemistry and I believe that I can learn a lot from it, but I can't even get it to work for more than a few hours. So far, I just have been using wall outlet power supplies designed to supply power to phones or what ever. These are rated 9-12 volts and 300 mA. I understand a higher amperage would be more efficient, but the power supplies heat up quickly and eventually die. This is apparently because the power supply is almost shorting out or something. Maybe... Anyhow, I'm ready to invest some money into this hobby as it has become to me, so what can I do about getting something that would stand up to what I am doing? Of course, my Dairy Que…

it would seem that Di-Ethyl Ether (ether) as used in "Cold Start" for engines is perfectly soluble in petrol/gasoline also. now since this is used in engines primarily to be sprayed directly intho the Air intake of the carbs to help start the engine on a cold day (rather than use the Choke, it says not to when using this stuff), what if it were mixed directly into the Fuel instead? for some reason I`ve done all I can with this new engine, but when it`s even a LITTLE BIT cold, it`s a real b!tch to start it`s great when it`s been running for about 5 mins, but requires several re-starts to get to that point. could making the actualy Fuel itself more "Flamable/v…

How would you rate the following compounds' released energy upon combustion (the use would be in an automobile engine). 1. H2 and O2 2. COH2 3. Gasoline I'm trying to see how a carbon-based electrolysis system (which produces COH2) would compare to the other fuels. Is it comperable, more powerful, or less? I would think less because the two hydrogens aren't bonded together. Then again, I am a fairly basic chemistry student. Someone told me that combustion in an internal combustion engine requires three elements: oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon. Is this true?

This is probably a very elementary question, but I was wondering how one could (relatively inexpensively and with everyday items) test for the presence of carbon dioxide in a chamber. More importantly, is there a way I could quantify the amount of CO2 in the chamber? I'm doing an experiment and want to see if CO2 is a byproduct, so I should be able to tell whether the concentration of CO2 has increased by the end of the experiment, so the pressure or volume of CO2 isn't necessary.

Do you think one could centrifuge the sediment in Percoll/Ficoll to separate organic (fixed animals and detritus) and inorganic stuff (silt, sand...)? I know there are some commercial products out there that match organics density, but I'm contemplating of Percoll/Ficoll use in this matter.

I am in desperate need of a good science fair project. I can't think of anything that would be good to do. I really would like to do a chemistry project but I can do anything scientifically, mathematically, or phsycologically related. Any ideas or comments would be greatly appreciated.

We have an unkown acid (we think its acetic) and a rough idea of the procedure goes like so... dissolve acid into 50ml of water, take 25ml and then titrate until the indicator turns pink... then add the rest of the 25 ml (untitrated) to the titrated acid. then take the pH of the new solution. Anyways, according to our lab, pKa is supposed to equal pH. I cannot figure out at all why pKa = pH. That would mean Ka = H+. One of our questions is to answer why pH = pKa and I don't think it should. If anyone has any idea I would appreciate it very much. (haven't posted in awhile... been really busy ) Edit: my bad wrong forum
