  4. Hi all. A voltaic cell with a carbon rod and aluminium rod electrodes generates some potential in a container with seawater. If that voltage is applied to other two platinum electrodes in the same electrolyte in the same container, will they generate some gases ?

Come on, enough skilled, experienced and smart people in this forum ! Come up with a fluid in a tub -or two layers of nonmiscible fluids, or whatever your knowledge yields- that when sun-bathed generate electricity at its electrodes. It's about time... Miguel

Hi Boffins and Boffettes, I need to create an ink that after application will remain invisible to the naked eye for a period of 4 days, (or thereabouts). It must reveal itself without a secondary agent (just time and normal environmental conditions), and needs to be made from non-hazardous, readily available (though not necessarily household) chemicals. Really hoping someone can help me. It's a bit of an esoteric request, but it's actually quite important. Thank you.

Ok so I tried a simple experiment I mixed 20% HCl solution with Zinc and guess what I got throat irritation from breathing in HCl fumes. 2HCl + Zn ---> ZnCl2 + H2 Cl- But there must be some Cl- maybe with water. Now this Cl- sucker are baddd. So If you want to experiment with HCl wear a wet t-shirt or something around your mouth. Oh and also check all the E-s in wikipedia.

Hey folks, I am trying to devise a method to filter aromas from the air. My general idea is to pump the air, via a fan and air duct, through a water-containing compartment. Now, my problem comes down to what to do from here. The molecule I am attempting to filter is a 3-ring aromatic hydrocarbon. I have been doing a lot of research, however, being only a college freshman, much of the information eludes me. I have scoured the internet for exactly what properties of the aromatic rings cause the molecule to have a smell, however, I was only able to find information about why we perceive smell (ie olfaction). With that being said, I took a shot in the dark and hypoth…

I'm wondering the difference between isopropyl (spell?) alcohol and ethyl alcohol. Obvioulsy they have different chemical formulas and different applications.... But I was wondering if using isopropyl alcohol in an ethyl alcohol lamp would be bad? I don't want to ruin the equipment or anything, i'm guessing that I wouldn't, but does one burn hotter than the other? thanks

Is it possible to safely and effectively recharge standard alkaline (AA, AAA and 9v) batteries with a standard off the shelf NiMH battery recharger? And if so, how many times would it work. I'm thinking of energizer batteries with an energizer recharger. cheers.

Hello Everyone! Recently I've drawn up some plans for a smallish potato launcher that would incorporate an electric ignition system. Most people seem to use stunguns or piezoelectric BBQ lighters, but I was wondering if a small 7.2 volt NiCad battery (or something similar) would be capable of producing one or two sparks for the ignition. If so, would it be reliable enough? Thanks

hey, I'm pretty much a novice at chemistry but i was wondering how you go about calculating the amount of chemicals for a nitration. Say i wanted to nitrate cellulose ( i know there are tons of recipes but i want to figure out how to do it myself:eyebrow: ) how would i calculate how much KNO3, H2SO4 and cotton to use? (I don't have HNO3) thanks for your time, thermonub

hello, i just had a question about the production method of potassium carbonate. when producing using potassium hydroxides absorbent reaction with CO2. since potassium carbonate is soluble in water do you have to recrystallise the solution after the reaction has taken place? 2KOH+CO2->K2CO3+H2O i figured since water is produced you will have to recrystallise it, but i just want to know if the product will precipitate from the solution and is the carbonation method done by dry ice or by bubbling CO2 through the KOH thanks, TATER

    So I have a question. What is the [s -2] in a saturated solution 9.10 M0 of H2S, in which the pH has been adjusted to 5.00 by the addition of HCl? For H2S, Ka1= 1.1 x 10-7 and Ka2 = 1.0 x -14.
