i know that CO2 is almost completely insoluble in H2O. i also know that only 1% of that CO2(aq) is H2CO3. can anybody here tell me a solvent that CO2 would be more soluble in that would also produce a great amount of H2CO3(aq)? i think most acids would work but i'm trying to find a better way than using acids; i am working on a research project and the next step i've decided would involve neutralizing the H2CO3(aq). of course, this wouldn't be efficient if there were a strong acid solution to neutralize. if you could help, i would be most grateful

Why does sodium hydroxide sometimes is solid and sometimes is liquid? And why doesn't sodium mix with water instead of reacting with? Where does the energy come from for sodium to react steadily with water?

the Hydrogen Ion can be either + or - the + being Hydrogen and the - being Hydride having said that, maybe I`ve got a mental block today, but could the same apply to any of the Group 1 elements (alkali metals). I`ve never heard of such an occurance, as they all seem to be cations in any compound that I`m aware of, even in Aluminate manganate selenate zincates etc... is there a reason that Hydrogen is the odd one out? I did know at one time, but I`ve forgotten (

I need a better insulating material. In the consumer arena we can buy such materials as silicone sealants and paints and whatever, but dielectric constants and electrical breakdown voltage are rarely posted on cans of (whatever substance you might care to name) in shops. I realize most that most substances generally found in hardware stores have dielectric constants ranging from 3 to 5, a few somehwat beyond this. There was a glimmer somewhere on the net (since lost!) about an alleged higher dielectric value of 'polysulfone tile adhesive', but I couldn't track it down. Barium Titanate would be lovely to get, but strolling into ACE Hardware an…

As part of a science project I need to produce a balanced equation for the reaction between Aluminium Selenide and Water producing the solid Aluminium Hydroxide and Hydrodgen Selenide. My calculation is in the following format: Al2 SE3 + H20 = H2SE + AL(OH)3 Add the number 2 b4 al on the right to balance the aluminium AL 2 SE3 + H20 = H2 SE3 + 2AL(OH)3 Then add the number three b4 h2 se3 to balance the selenium AL2 SE3 + H20 = 3H2 SE3 + 2AL(OH)3 To balance the hydrodgen add the number six b4 h20 on the left AL2 SE3 + 6H20 = 3H2 SE + 2AL(OH)3 This then leaves us with six oxygen atoms on both sides and hopefully a balanced equation. Am I r…

I need help with how to calculate the empirical formula and molecular formula for the reaction between phosphorus burning in air. I have already have the information that Phosphorus burns in air to form diphosphorus pentoxide(flowers of Phosphorus), P2o5. I need the formula for the production of a waxy crystalline solid compound (a different form of phosphorus oxide )that is produced as the phosphorus continues to burn in a limited supply of air. I believe that the solid is phosphorus oxide and am being asked to work out the empirical formula on the basis that it is 56.4% phosporus and 43.6% oxygen also taking into account the relative atomic masses of the two elemen…

Any ideas for how to make it work? Personally, I think that it would work if people at r&d could figure out a catalyst for the decomposition of H2O. does that make sense? if not, do you have any other suggestions? if so, any idea what the catalyst could be?

First off, I'm not a chemical engineer or even a student. That being said, I'm looking for some insight into observations I've recently made since starting to use a new type of ORP/pH controller. All the literature I've read on the subject indicates that while cyanuric acid reduces the consumption of hypochlorous acid by UV, the mechanism by which that occurs is not well understood. In chlorinated water (2 ppm) with 40 ppm cyanuric acid I have observed the ORP value increase from 740 mV to 815 mV over the course of about 4 hours beginning when the outdoor swimming pool becomes shaded (starting about 5 PM). There was no chlorine feed during this period, the pH remained…

Anyone know of some good ways to grow HUGE CUBIC halite (NaCl) crystals? Accidentally, as I find many things out by accident... I left a few paper towels in a saturated salt solution. Then, I let it sit for a good three weeks. When the solution was nearly evaporated, I found some nice 1/8 inch cubic crystals of salt growing on the towel. I assume that the capillary action of the towel soaked up the salt water slowely, leaving it to evaporate? Well, does anyone have some ideas to improve the experiment, perhaps making it more practical, ultimately, making huge 1 inch cubes?

I was wondering if it is possible to using CO2 gas in between two latex or plastic membranes to cool a human body? Is it possible? Or are there other refrigerant gases out there that could cool a body? I was wondering cause I am going out to Arizona. It so hot out there and I was thinkin it would be so cool if I could invent a vest that doesnt have to be refrigerated that can be light and use the cooling properties of CO2. Is this possible?

I heard about this a while back. You know how some people can be dumb, but in a "very smart" kind of way? This is a interesting (true) story about the "Radioactive Boyscout" who tried to make a nuclear reactor in his garage. And he came pretty close to succeeding.

H1 we`re all familiar with, but H2 and H3 (Deuterium and Tritium) Hydrogen isotopes as found in "heavy water". I`de like to know if H2 or H3 can exist as a gas or form a Hydride, 2 questions in one really. I`m interested in the properties of these, especialy as a gas, and potentialy in reactions that employ Neutrons as part of the reaction process. thanx all

Today I tried the following experiment: 20% HCl+NaOH+NaClO3(the latter 2 were in a solution of draino) I distinctly remember it turning white and fizzing as the HCl was added. I also remember faintly smelling (i ran the other way after adding the HCl) a strange odor. Then I coughed a few times (nothing bad). Was the gas produced Cl2? Could somebody write out the reaction? Personally, I think it's HCl+NaOH->NaCl+H2O Of course, I say this assuming the NaClO3 doesn't react.
