i've got KNO3 and i want to mixture it (to make back powder)... but i need to have KNO3 in powder (i've got in small grain)... is there anyway to mixture very well the sulfur and the KNO3 so that can burn more easily? i made this mini-bomb: ----[||||-R-||||]---- -the ----[ ]----- is a fuse with ||||| powder, and R is a resistence fuse (literal translation from portuguese)... I tried to *burn* the resistence fuse with more than the R voltage but the powder could get start burnning... I think that the powder is not well done, it was to be more finner: powder. Does anyone know the ignition tempereture (in ºC please) for the black powder? Perhaps anothe…

Hi, Has anyone heard of a layer of boric acid being used as a heat shield? I know it is often used in solution and other composites to act as a fire retardant, but what I'm looking for is any reference to boric acid, by itself, being used as an insulator. Maybe like a layer of boric acid protecting the components of a flight data recorder? Heard of anything like this?

Well i'm new to this board and have a few projects going. I will be honest and say i have very little chemistry knowledge but hope to fix that in the future. I am currently searching for some sort of reaction that will create smoke. I do not care what color but i do want it to apply to the following rules... 1. non toxic, people will be breathing this stuff! 2. cold burning reaction, it can not heat up enough to light a fire in dry grass (i'm not exactly sure what kinda temps that would be but i woudl say keep it below 200 F). 3. Volume of smoke, i am looking for as much smoke by volume as possible with this, the more the better. 4. Size, i am hoping to fit this …

Magnesium alloy pencil sharpeners are still available: http://www.bleistiftspitzer.com/Produkte.asp?Cat1=100&Cat2=200 I got two-hole sharpener ( exactly like pictured here ) from nearby supermarket. It was quite easy to scrap it with knife. Powder i got this way did what you expect of Mg. Note that you can test things for Mg by droping small quantities of vinegar onto it. Reaction is quite intense if metal is Mg, if metal is Al or Zn nothing happens.

I am now experimenting with various NH4NO3 based comps with little to speak of. mainly because I am getting very simalar reactions as if I was using KNO3 or KCIO3, OR am getting non working comps. any formulas for some energetic comps would be great. thanks Peter

just wondering what i would end up with if i created an atmosphere with oh, say 3/4ths H2 and 1/4th air and increased pressure. how much pressure would be required to form NH3? how much pressure would be required to form H2O (i could imagine much less than the amount for NH3). what else would be produced? we can assume that not all of the H2 will form H2O because there is more H2 than the amount required to make the H2+O2 -> 2H2O reaction go to completion.

Does NH4NO3 and Aluminium Powder make rocket fuel? I've been told its a powerful explosive but rocket fuel?? As an old friend of mine currently taking his masters degree at York university told me it made rocket fuel, and it's not like him to lie, but I have my doubts on this one. Also, can anyone tell me the ratio of NH4NO3 to Fuel I need in the preparation of ANFO's? Also what detonators should I use, as I have access to blasting caps, but I'm not sure what kind etc. and I would have to "Borrow" them if I did use them, so anything else is prefrible. Any posts appreciated Regards

I found in old mineralogy book such kind of testing: take 3 parts of NaCO3 and one part of some unknown minerale that may be SiO2 or FeCr2O4 for example or some other inert oxide. Mix, heat as long as it melts and it turns into something that can be solved in acids for furter testing. Can anyone explain what exactly happens and what the product is.

Has anyone heard anything about Octanitrocubane? All I know about it is that It's one of the/the newest synthetic explosive, and is also the most powerful, yet it ranks among the most stable, you can hit it with a hammer and nothing happens. The interest was first in Cubane, which is also quite stable, but the thought was that its chemical offspring (Octanitrocubane) would be stable to shock, as it is. The carbon atoms naturally bond at 109 degrees, and they are sreched to 90 degrees, and many discreditors thought it would not be possible to make, as the bonding degrees would stretch it to breaking point, but the discreditors were wrong! Anyone know how to manufa…

I just got some aluminium powder Does anyone know much about it? We used it in science for a thermite reaction Can it be used as an oxidizing agent? Is their anyway of making it at home? Is it surposed to be highly reactive with water? What is the ratio of ferric oxide and aluminium powder in thermite reaction? Can Potassium permanganate be used instead of Potassium Nitrate as an oxidizing agent? Also i tried to make potassium nitrate with sodium nitrate and potassium chloride by using crystalization, it didnt work thanx IcE pHoEnIx

Anyone here tried to make alkaline metals by elektrolysis using some non-water solvent? I read from one russian book that such thing is possible. They used propylene carbonate as solvent for NaClO3 and got some fine sodium plating on cathode. It should be possible with some other solvents too as book stated that propylene carbonate gave BEST results... Any comments?

Why does hydrogencarbonate based [MATH]H_2CO3 [/MATH] molecule give out carbon dioxide normally? Moreover, does H2CO3 carbonic acid give out carbon dioxide normally? It is hydrogen mixed with that ion.

Take iridium 193 (natural abudance=62.7%) and bombard it with neutrons. for the neutrons, just use a neutron gun (try using americium-241 from smoke alarms with aluminum foil in front of it, or better yet radium-226 from luminous dial clocks with beryllium in front of it then make a casing out of lead and poke a hole in one end of it). every Ir isotope above 193 yields beta- decay with quite low half-lives. yep, this means that within hours you'll have mostly platinum. only problem is that the only reasonably stable Pt isotopes are 190, 192, 194 196 and 198, so you'll end up with some gold and then mercury quite quickly. still, i am sure you will have quite a bit of …

I was watching QVC (purely by accident) and saw an interesting material for sale on there, interesting enough to make me sit for the whole hour and pay attention! it`s a white/grey type compound that resembles Clay, it`s kept in a light proof plasticised foil bag. when you shape this clay you leave it to dry, or spend 5 mins with a hair dryer. then you put a small heatsheild ring around it and blow torch it on a ceramic (heatproof) tile. there will be little silver bits that start to form when the flame is on it, there is 10% shrinkage. and the resulting item is 99.999% (yes THREE 9`s) pure silver! I`m wondering if it`s Silver Chloride in a solvent? any id…

Currently we are producing Ammonium sulfate from a pipe reactor, but I would like to know when does Ammonium bisulfate form and how can I test for ABS in the AS? When does Ammonium pyrosulfate form? The reason I ask all these questions is that we produced hard rock slabs in the spray chamber and would like to know what we made and if we could convert that to AS powder? thanks guys
