Hey, I was wondering if anyone could direct me to a good tutorial on how to make antifreeze? It'd be nice if it would stay in its aqueous state until -40F, since that's the type of conditions I live in here. Thanks

Well i want to begin studying forensic science for a bit, ive watched Quincy and CSI and shows like that for a while. Im wondering if theres any good online or mail order stores (UK) that carry things such as Luminol (C8H7O3N3)and other things you might see on TV. I seen in another thread someone is doing a science degree with forensic science or something and I just wonder if your doing a profesional degree do you do all the science stuff or is it mostly law? and is things different in england because ive heard there are SOCO's (scence of the crime officers) that collect the evidence and then deposit it back at a lab? An how does Luminol actually work? react with the hem…

I know quite a few of us are currently taking organic I this semester. I am curious to see what books (including lab and nomenclature if it applies) you guys are using. cheers for the info. I'm using Organic Chemistry 5th ed. by Carey, Francis A. Organic Chemistry Solution Manuel (thank god for this book!) Operational Organic Chemistry 3rd ed. Lehman, John W (my lab book) My nomenclature book I can't find, but i believe it is by Trayner or something similar, the one with the structure of Prozac on the cover (can anyone say irony)

Dear Organic Chem. Educators, Hi everyone. Just hoping for a little feedback here. I have been trying to come up with a business plan, as it pertains to higher education and creating custom animations for departments, such as your own. I have been trying to learn the best way to approach dept.s here in MN, with the goals I have in mind and the services I have to offer. I thought, possibly, I could attract some departments with the idea - "instead of the textbook companies telling you which concepts take more time to teach and learn, possibly you (the educators) would have some thoughts about addtional tools you could use, both in the classroom and to se…

Please help... I've been working on alkylating acetylacetone (2,4-pentanedione or Acac) with isopropyl alcohol by means of BF3 for 2 months, but resulting in nothing. I have tried once with my solid zirconium lewis acid catalyst which is good for esterification (almost general) and alcoholysis (specific), but it was also unsuccessful. Well, basically, I just want to get alkylated acetylacetone, substituting one proton situated in its methylene site. It is just fine to get it alkylated by any alkyl. If possible to alkylate it with halide-alkyl, it would be so great. If I'm not mistaken, the alkylation of a substance, like Acac, could be carried out by fir…

Cycloalkenes can, of course, contain more than one double bond. If there are two bonds then the ene ending of the name is replaced with diene. If there are three bonds then the ene ending of the name is replaced with triene. For more double bonds, the Greek prefix is placed in front of the ene ending to indicate the number of double bonds. An example attached: Cyclopenta-1,3-diene

I am working on an independent study of nitroglycerin and one component of this assignment is to find a contact for an explanation. I would greatly appreciate anyone who can help by giving me a brief overview of any of the following aspects of nitroglycerin, which would also allow me to look into each in greater detail: - environmental chemistry - optimum orientation - economic significance - applications - social effects I know these are straight forward and I can find any information I need on the web, but the point is to hear it from someone with a background in chemistry. Please include your title or credentials. thanks Nick, gr12 chem

Can anyone tell me what economical and available chemical can be used as a dispersant for nitromethane in a naptha solution? Basically I am talking about unleaded race gas, but unleaded premium is probably a better base. That would be something along the lines of Naptha mixed with either 25% Toluene or 35% MTBE, plus whatever junk they feed to cars nowadays. I can get something locally that is proprietary; it allows mixing of nitromethane and/or methanol in pump gas. It also is supposed to prevent "phase shifting" of methanol, whatever the heck that might be. It is supposed to decrease cylinder head temps as well (alcohol does this) and provide a top cylinder lu…

Hi, Just 2 questions on this 1. What is the chemical formula for Unleaded Petrol 2. When the combustion of ULP occurs in a car engine, what happens? Like what is the chemical equation. I've been trying to research this, but I don't understand because some sources say Sulpher and Nitrogen pops out of no where at the end of the equation. Thanks.
