Hey there and thanks for clicking into this topic. I'm in need of a notebook for my university, and I was wondering what you think is the best bang for buck amongst these. http://www.pcandparts.com/notebook.htm Keep in mind that the linked-to site is my only option And on a side note, what do you prefer, smaller or bigger screens on your laptops? Thanks in advance

  3. I often plug in my U3 jumpdrive, and it will load this annoying pop-up screen asking me what I want to do with it. It tells me to pick an option. I went into explorer and customized the drive by telling it to pick "Take no action" within the autoplay tab. However, it didn't seem to work. It didn't seem to work because explorer keeps opening the drive folder of my USB. I'm getting annoyed by this, and I want to stop it. I don't mind if the smart u3 program starts, but I don't want to view the contents of the folder. How do I turn it off?

I've been working with c++ and I can write a simple program, but only in the console. The class that I took, and the text book only talk about console programs. How does one write a program with some sort of UI?

I've been messing around with a copy of Vista I got from the school, and I was just wondering if anybody here has had a chance to load up Firefox 2.0 in Vista yet. Did it work ok or are we waiting for a service release? Thanks!

  10. I have a Dell Dimension 4600 with around 30 Gb free on the internal drive and another 200 on an external drive, and an Intel Penitum 4 processor. I have 1 Gb of RAM and an NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200 video card. Recently, I bought Oblivion, a game by Bethesda Works. I started it up, and it has very low graphics, and at times the game would crash. It would crash less if I lower the graphics settings. I have all the recommended specs for my computer except the graphics card; the makers recommend NVIDIA Geforce 6800, but my graphics card is on the minimum system requirements. So it seems to me the problem is with the graphics card. Would you all agree? I was wonderi…

  11. Hi all, I've recently been having some major issues with my computer. At (mostly) random times, the blasted machine just hangs. Unfortunately i haven't been able to pinpoint what exactly is the cause. I've narrowed it down to overheating, power supply issues, or just general hardware failure. The thing is, it happens at random intervals, and also at random stages of use. One time it'll hang during the POST, the next time after half an hour of gaming, another time while booting windows, and yet another time while just doing casual work (non intensive, like web design or something like that). Thing is, i recently had to downgrade my graphics card due to hardware failure…

I just wified some mp3 and ogg files to my laptop and the mp3's seem to have picked up a sound that wasn't there before it kind of sounds like when you scratch at an earphone that your wearing. since this gets louder if youturn up the volume i can only assume this is an artifact that has been picked up at some point because it was NOT there before. could this have been caused by interferance? or something else?

Ever since I re-installed windows, my cd burner won't work. No special error, just the error while burning. It also errors when I boot into Linux, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

Anyone know any reason not to use a 20 - 24-pin ATX power cable converter? Why they need an extra four pins I have no idea, but i'll be damned it i'm replaceing my PSU for my new Motherboard! Oh and whilst I'm here why would a motherboard have a memory compatibility list - not just the specifics like ddr / ddr2 etc etc but brand names and model numbers. I thought as long as its the right type brands etc appart from quality were interchangeable

Ok well this is getting ridiculous. I tried putting my computer in DMZ but this apparently brings my computer out of the firewall and doesn't do much to forward ports. I assume there are like 50000 ports so I tried forwarding the range 1 - 50000 and my router told me to reset and log on again. So that didn't really work. I had twenty other forwards to begin with so maybe it would've been better to delete those first, but anyway, aside from running all these wires around and connecting directly to the Internet (thus kicking the other computers off), is there anyway I can just tell the router, "Forward everything to my computer?"

Well this isn't really comp sci, or computer help. From a discussion on IRC... OK, so say you had upto about £1500 (~$2500) to build a new computer the only restrictions being that the case has to be smaller than: 600mm (H) x 210mm (W) x 420mm (D) And it has to include a monitor. What would you do? Links would be better that just names of parts. Thanks....

  23. I'm considering buying a laptop, and I was specifically considering one from Alienware. They seem very good and high end, and while I don't need too much high-end stuff, I figure if I get a good machine, it'll be longer before I have to replace it. So, a few questions: 1) What has everyone heard about Alienware in general? Good? Bad? I've heard generally good things, but a few problems due to high heat and weight (though the model I'm looking at, the 15" Area 51, is apparently only 6 lbs or so). 2) Is bluetooth worth the extra $30 or so? 3) They come with either 5400 RPM or 7200 RPM hard drives. I know the latter will be faster, but by how much? How impo…

I had some comp trouble, and had to reinstall my browser. I use mozilla 1.5.7.0, but have also tried mozilla 2.0 and IE6, and none of them seem to be able to display background, along with a few other types of images.

My motherboard says "Supports 2 DIMM for DDR 400/333/266 memory up to 2GB" so does this mean it can only take 2G per slot or 2G total -- can I buy two 2G and have a total of 4 or am I limited to just 2G total. Also with the 400/333/266, is 400MHZ RAM much faster than 266?
