YT's Sticky ^^ mention no threads regarding those substances (yeah i know this does, but bear with me) i did a quick google, cos , Obviously, curiosity got the better of me, and i had to kno what they were..... but that was pretty useless one of the search results actually points back to YT's thread lol looksie : http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=mozclient&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&q=HMTDAN so what are they? im guessing either explosives or some nasty toxin, nerve gas etc just to reiterate, im not looking for any specifics, or in ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM information or links pertaining to the composition or production methods of whate…

This past weekend I was playing paintball with some friends and coworkers and spent a good six hour running around and putting my body to the extreme. After all the running, I rested for the rest of the day and felt some intense muscle cramps in my legs. (The type of cramping that makes you curl up into a ball and scream in agony. These things hurt BAAAAAAAAAAD and I hope they don't happen again). I know why the muscles cramped up, and that's due to the potassium ions in the muscle cells being depleted. Too little potassium and your muscles cramp up. Too much and they relax too much, almost to the point of paralysis. (Hence why KCl is injected into the bloodstream …

I'm not 100% sure if this is directly chemistry related, but it kind of is. I'm a big fan of The Onion which is an online news "spoofing" site. Each week they update their site and have a section for horroscopes. My birthday is in early August, so I'm a Leo. Today I went to their site, www.theonion.com and checked out the horroscope. Upon reading my horroscope, I broke out into fits of laughter. Here's why: "Leo: (July 23—Aug. 22) Three extremely important events will mark your last days on earth: First, you find out you can buy uranium over the Internet. The second and third pretty much follow as the night follows the day." LMFAO.

If there are two salts in a solution, evaporating the water slowly to boil the water away, two kinds of crystals are formed. Why the each of the crystals is not contaminated by the other salt, like staying in the "core" of the crystal?

Just as a heads up for all you chemists, you can now use the ce tag to generate chemistry LaTeX. For example: [ce]H2O[/ce] Will generate [ce]H2O[/ce].

  14. Hey everyone, I've received some good news over the past couple of weeks that I wanted to share with everyone here. As you all know, I have an ever growing collection of the elements which I've photographed extensively. Those photos are currently hosted over at http://www.chemicalforums.com and are also being used by Peter Van der Krogt on his elementymology website. (A REALLY cool site that goes into the history behind the naming of each element. http://www.vanderkrogt.net/elements/index.html.) So lots of people have seen and are seeing my element pictures which is a really neat feeling. A couple of weeks ago, I received a private message over at the other forum…

I always wanted to do Chemistry at A-Level, but unfortunately my school wouldn't let me do 6 A-levels However, now I'm going to have a bit of spare time over the holidays, I'd like to get to grips with the basics again and maybe go and do a Chemistry A-Level at my local college. I'd just like to know if anyone can recommend any good books, online references, and soforth. I'm quite interested in doing this, but unfortunately my maths has kept me quite busy Cheers in advance.

Yea, I know. Not exactly physical chemistry theory but a real world classic problem. Call me stupid , but.... I was making an aldehyde of an oil, an unobnoxius critter really, but it was/is dissolved in some methyl alcohol. I had in a flattened bot RB bottom ground neck flask. It needed to be dry for the next process and I had just remover it from the freezer. So I added some nice dry silica to it, and put the pyrex stopper in it, put on the mag stirrer on slow for a while, and let it settle. (oops !). I thought the warming up would offset the dessicant sucking up the water (and thinking for the dessicant would expand a bit as it hydrated). Anyway, no luck, the …

As we look at the metals on the periodic table, the further we go along, the more difficult that metal's carbonate is to decompose. i.e. Sodium Carbonate is more readily decomposed than Calcium Carbonate. I need to devise a method of experimentally testing this. My thoughs as such are; we heat the carbonate (as a solid - possibly in water [but NOT aqueous]), and using limewater - test at what temperature carbon dioxide is released. My question is - is this approach feasible, what equipment will I need, is there a better way of proving the hypothesis. I have access to varoius carbonates, limewater, and ordinary lab equipment (glassware, bunsens, filtration devices,…

I made some "piranah bath" (30% h2o2 + h2so4) (50-50 roughly), and i wanted to see how well it would dissolve meat. i set up an experiment to see how well acetic acid conc., conc. h2so4, h202, KOH, and "piranah bath" would dissolve a piece of beef. I thought piranah bath would "eat away the flesh" faster than sulfuric acid, but it didnt, it wasn very good at dissolving it, even though people say its stronger than h2so4. Why is this?

I'll take chemistry next year and hopefully, it's bit more fun than biology now because even biology is okay, I would hope chemistry is little bit better since a lot of math is involved. But I don't know any of the competition of chemistry. I heard of USA Physics Team or AMC (American Mathematics Competition) for math but what about chemistry? If anyone knows about it, please post here so I can know about it. Thank you!

How is it possible that two path functions (heat and work, for example) add up to a state function (change in internal energy)? Why is energy a state function? Why is heat a path function? Why is work a path function? Many thanks.
