Ok, here's my actual question; how can the body convert already specialized cells back into stem cells? And do these cells being converted really come from other parts of the body? Don't they need them?

I was just wondering if anyone knew how stem cells are differentiated from their embryonic form into the specialized cells needed to cure disease. Is this done genetically, or do the cells automatically transform into the type of cells that they are surrounded by (i.e. one could place stem cells on a destroyed nerve ending and the cells would naturally become new nerve cells)? Or does it have something to do with the protein markers on the outside of the cell? Any reputable sources that deal with this procedure would be nice, and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, John

I am a high school senior with a planned career in biology and need help with a long-term project. I'm planning an experiment involving restricted-calorie diet as a way to promote mouse longevity. However, I am unable to find a reliable source of information about the dietary requirements of mice. Does anyone know how many calories the average mouse consumes per day on a non-calorie-restricted diet? How about nutrients? I read ratpalace.com's information on rodent nutrition, but found almost no information beyond that. I would probably keep the mice on Harlan Teklad 2014 or similar, but have no idea how much to feed them per day on my planned 65% restricted diet. I'd …

I am so stumped with this... "Three cells whose dipoloid number is 32 go through meiosis. How many cells result and how many total chromosomes are in each cell" This is an extra credit question... Sigh...

hi all, i'm following a life science cource at university. I'm looking for books about this subject with the contents such as questions and answers or multiple choices, etc. Because i often have many exams concerning about isolation, PCR, purification, designing primers and so on, so i would like to have some books with lots of questions inside and the answers for them as well. Plz give me some advice, thnxxxx a lot

I don't think there are many cases where intelligence isn't a desirable trait to have. The only exception I can think of is with some women. It seems that archetypal men are more drawn to dumb or 'ditzy' women. Perhaps it's because these women are easier prey and are easier to dominate, which is what archetypal men like to do. It's even well-known that some women pretend to act dumb to land their man of preference (by dyeing their hair blonde and acting dumb). So that right there is an example of how intelligence kicks ass. Even if intelligence is undesirable in a certain situation, an intelligent person can adapt and get what he/she wants because he/she is cle…

I need the answer to some questions because Glencoe can't make a book to save their lives. The questions are: 1. What is the difference in the size of a lion cubs cells compared to it's mother's 2. What is the size range of most cells 3. What would happen to a cell if it were too big (has to be in 16 words, don't ask me why) Or if any1 has the Book, if they could tell me where to find the answeres.

1) Can the demage of brain cells be recovered by using stem cell technology? 2) What's the composition of the lining of the stomach wall? Does it dissolve in ethanol so that ethanol cause stomach ulcer and bleeding in this way? 3) How does ethanol lead to mouth throat and esophagus cancer, does it mean ethanol is carcinogen?

Anybody knows how much time we take to respond to a simple stimulus? (on average). I try googling and found a lot of conflicting reports. Did some experiments by playing reaction time games. Example: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/282683 Did manage to get a mean reaction time of around 170 ms.. (repeated 20 times) If this post violates forum rules (since newgrounds does contains unsuitable material), please delete this thread.

How much energy does ATP give off when it changes to ADP? Can we somehow harness that energy to, say, power nanobots? Is this an exploitable area. I'm asking because I'm considering doing a project on this in a university lab hopefully. Any suggestions is welcome. How can I actually SHOW that the energy can be used? How can I convert the heat that ATP gives off to electricity efficiently? And how much ATP is needed to power say a very small lamp (battery powered ones)

I've found myself not really being able to focus on things in my mind for longer than a few seconds because something else distracts me. Also, anything I visualize in my head usually tends to be very basic looking -- I can't seem to be able to remember vibrant sceneries or specific visual details. But for some reason, it's the opposite with anything sound related -- I seem to be able to remember every single song i've ever heard, and whenever I think about one I don't lose focus on it. Is there anything wrong with my ability to concentrate?

If I understand the goal of the BlueGene project correctly they are attempting to build a lookup table for folding pathways and kinetics based upon protein structures. To accomplish this lofty goal (given the immensely vast number of protein permutations which exist in nature) they're throwing a previously unheard of petaflop of processing power at the problem. Now, if I understand correctly protein folding was the biggest barrier in building a complete computer model of biomolecular behavior within a cell, being at present so computationally costly to model as to be worthless. With a lookup table of how protein folds, the computational cost is eliminated because th…

Everyone knows that octupi change color. The theory behind why this is is because this allows them to camouflage. However, I heard from a source that this is also used to communicate - that one octupus can go through a quick series of color changes and another octupus can see this series and confer a meaning from it.

How would the rate of respiration compare for a small reptile and small mammal of equal mass at 10 degrees celsius? How would rate or respiration compare for small mammal at 10 degrees celsius and another small mammal at 20 degrees celsius? How might rate of respiration compare for seeds that have been germinating for 0, 24, 48, 72 hours? I am very confused at these, I think it may have something to do with the fact that mammals are warm blooded where reptiles are cold blooded but I dont know how to explain it. And the last question Im lost. Plz help. Thx in advance

http://pharyngula.org/index/weblog/comments/mysterious_trichoplax/ see picture very little specialization---only four different types of cells no head, no tail, no recognizable shape, no nervous system of course, not even a gut or stomach. it eats algae slime. the early multicell organisms that you and I decended from may have been like this the cells stick together and co-operate in a crude sense, like a leaderless mob of people they gradually move across a surface, like a small patch, grazing the algae. some mornings I feel like a Trichoplax =============== does anyone know of a simpler, even less sophisticated, multicell animal?

I'm rather curious, I know that people who undergo sex changes would have to go for HRT(Hormonal replacement therapy) but I have a few questions about it: How would it work since the additional hormones would have to override the natural body system? I mean, for lets say a person changing sex from male to female, s/he would have to take estrogens/anti androgens but the thing I do not know is will the body produce a negative feedback and produce more testosterone until the levels of testosterone and estrogen equal out such that a plateau is reached? (I know that people taking anabolic steroids would produce a similar effect with the hormone cortisol and would result i…

http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/story/0,3605,1605806,00.html "Research by a team of neuroscientists has revealed that male mice construct complex songs and sing them for minutes at a time when they come across sex pheromones produced by potential mates. The songs are not audible to the human ear because they are too high frequency and although scientists knew mice emitted ultrasonic chirps, recordings of the noises had never been fully analysed." this article has MP3 audio clips which are very nice they are the song of the Mouse shifted down 4 octaves.

The Chinese believe that it is unhealthy to drink ice water. I can understand how it could slow things down a bit, such as digestion, however, I was wondering if it really is detrimental to one's health on a long term basis. Personally I'd take an ice-cold beer over lukewarm anyday.

Hi! I'm new here... Could somebody help me with my project/idea? I was searching for a topic (for my project) and saw this: "The Feasibility of Jatropha curcas Seeds as Mosquito Repellant/Killer" But I'm not familiar with this plant(Jatropha curcas)...also, i wanted to modify this title/project...could someone give me ideas on how to start it? Thanks!
