Discussion of science topics that don't fit under any other category.

So I saw a documentary the other day on the possibility of 2012 being the end of the world, and it got me thinking about what might be required for a group of people to survive a world-ending disaster, and not just survive but actually thrive. I'd just like to say that I have absolutely no formal training in any of the sciences, so this is simply a thought exercise that I am undertaking with the idea of possibly using it as something to flesh out a story I am considering, so I thought I would itemize what I think would be the criteria for establishing said survival( and if there's any you think I missed, please post them), and ask all of you for help in coming up with…

almost every time a non-scientist uses the word theory it means guess or educated guess. but correct me if I am wrong but when a scientist uses the word theory it means that it is not 100% proven but all indications strongly point towards the conclusion they have made. and while it still needs to be tested until it is proven can it be treated as "near fact". so kinda voiding the phrase "just a theory" note this is not a creationist vs evolution thread so please keep to the topic thank you

Let me list the methods of dissemination of research work that I can think of. I then invite comments on these and please add any other methods I have missed out. I am thinking of mathematics and physics in particular, but I expect most of the list will apply to all scientific branches. In no particular order: Publish papers in reputable journals. Place preprints of the arXiv. Personal websites. Online blogs. Give talks at conferences. Talk to people at conferences and meetings, even if you are not presenting a paper. Give seminar talks. Give a lecture series. Email other researchers giving details of where to find your work. Write monographs. Write a …

Have you noticed that when you look at a clock on the wall above you, the axis of the perceived elliptical image is at a "funny angle" and it moves when you move, yet the major axis of the rim of a cup on a table in front of you is always horizontal - and you cannot move to a position where it is not so. Why?

I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I am interested in what would happen if most humans disappeared from the face of the earth. By most I am talking about approximately 99.995%, leaving about 5 out of every 100,000 behind. And by disappeared I mean exactly that, not died, but vanished. What would happen to power supplies? electricity/gas etc, water supplies, power stations, nuclear power stations, oil rigs, etc etc? I want to get an idea of what things would shut down immediately, what things would keep running for some time, what would explode, meltdown etc? What about satellites? What would happen to the eco system, wildlife etc? What ab…

  10. Simple question, but why is the sky blue but we still get loads of white light coming through the atmosphere and we don't all appear blue. Moreover, if the sky is a brilliant blue and the sea reflects the colour, why is the sea sometimes green? All simple answers welcomed.

I am writing a paper about educational research and specifically research on the use of robotics in education. I welcome people's comments on the following position. Education is usually thought of as a "soft science". Within education research their are two basic positions: positivistic and nominalist. The first of these insist that the only valid research comes from experiments with control groups and ends up with some numbers. One practitioner says: I think the positivistic approach has a lot to offer, but Einstein had a sign on the wall of his study which pronounced: I think there are other "harder sciences" that are not predominantly mathematical…

I wanted to share a video I made portraying my perspective and the emergent theory of life. If you know any more videos along the same lines please share! Hope you enjoy it! I hope this is not a repost, but I couldn't find the topic in the Search function. The US have for a long time been trying to develop a missile defense system, to defend themselves from nuclear attacks etc. From my understanding this project has failed so far. From what I have read about the project the system contains multiple anti air missile launching sites around the US and in other areas as well. When an enemy missile is within range of the anti air missile sites, multiple counter missiles will be fired agains the hostile missile and destroy it. I was thinking of another way, probably to ambitious - and some of you might have som cons against it too. …

  16. the government doesn't have to tell us about their experimental technology or ground breaking sciences. but if they don't keep us informed to some extant they would need to educate their new scientists and techs in advanced material before they could begin working. so how close does the tech and science available to civilians compare government tech. p.s i understand if this thread is moved to speculations but I think that it deserves to remain here. but should it be sent to speculations please don't close the topic to new replys

G'day, I've recently be told that the fertility rate for a country to grow is a minimum 2.1, and in the US at this very moment it is 1.8 - however with the amount of illegal muslim immigrants with their rate of 8.1, soon enough, America will become a muslim country.

  18. I've done a lot of research on height increase and it's hard to get information that's not from laymen or people who are so advanced they'll just blow you off(cartilage and stem cell researchers). I can prove that it's possible to increase height on every level. Long bones can experience appositional growth(there's been studies done on runners showing increase in periosteal width unless the increase is due to thicker periosteum people being more successful runners) and short, flat, and irregular bones have periosteum covering longitudinal directions such as calcaneus, pelvis, bone of the skull, spine, etc. Therefore it's possible to grow taller that way. The epi…

Any scientists out there who are interested, I'd like a mathematical and/or scientific critique of the assertions made at the following website: http://www.scribd.com/doc/448517/Evolution-What-Are-the-Odds Note there are some comments on the side that are directed towards a mathematical critique of the poster's assertions. These critiques appear to be valid, but I think the underlying premise in the post has something to it. The underlying argument posed at the site is that it is, essentially, mathematically impossible (or at least so improbable as to be impossible) for life to have arisen on its own using pure random chance. The poster appears to believe that…

I just published an app on the apple itunes store with fun science experiments you can do at home. I figured who better to ask for feedback than the fellow scientists. The app is $1.99 in the app store but I have included free promo codes for you to use, and hopefully will leave a review about what you think of the material in the app. Please, use the codes in the order and let people know which one you have used. I am trying to make a ferrofluid display cell with 1oz plastic bottles and water. The water will not mix with the ferrofluid (its oil base) but when a strong magnet is brought close the ferrofluid flows to the edge and coats the plastic so when the ferrofluid is no longer there the plastic is still black. I have had some amount of success with mixing soap with the water but that still doesn’t last long. A thicker solution of soap and water also helps but that minimizes the length of the spikes. Any ideas? Edit: You can see a display cell at: https://www.teachersource.com/catalog/index.html You must do a search for "Ferrofluid Preform Display Cell" T…

  24. Around the world, the threat of a dying planet has spurred the development of many new “green” technologies. From the production of biogas to the abundance of solar, wind, and water renewable energy, innnovators from all around the world have shifted their focus to the development of technologies capable of reducing the carbon footprint of the human race. Politicians continue to preach green, creating countless new legislation in favor of saving our planet. The development of biofuels and biogas is growing exponentially. However, while most people may think of green technology as renewable energy, there is now an abundance of unique, creative technologies around th…

  25. I've often wondered if any humans invented or discovered something way too early or late, all things considered. if history was run again over the last two thousand years, what invention or discovery would you probably see earlier or later than it happened in our timeline? Penicillin is something that some people think was discovered later than it should have been. Hot air balloon? Steam engine? Telescope? Algebra? Any thoughts on what invention or discovery seems, looking back, to not have happened exactly at the "right time"?
