ok, basically these ideas are going to be lame as but it's a start. the laser->cell method: u have ur generator and coming out of it is a litte wire on the end is a laser then on the other end is ur device, say a lightbulb and a little wire coming out of that too. on the end of that is a solar cell. aim ur laser at the solar cell and hey presto, power to the globe. doubts: do lasers even work on solar cells, if not use like a torch. downfalls: u have to have direct line of sight with ur target probably not so good over distances small amounts of power the biological method: we all know that plants can produce energy …

Been thinking recently ( a few years now ) and now want to bounce a few ideas, so please be as ruthless as possible. Current thinking that im aware of is that the universe is going to continue to expand and is in fact speeding up. This raises the question as to how exactly how they are measuring the rate of expansion and is it possible that they are missreading the information, could it be infact that the point nearer to the centre of the universe is slowing at a greater rate then the object at the outer edge of the universe giving the illusion that the expansion is speeding up? or that there is a continuing expansion at all? Another way of looking at what might be …

Some nice person bought me a "Book of Useless Information" a while back and one of the entries caught my interest: H2O expands as it freezes and contracts as it melts, displacing the exact same amount of fluid in either state. So if the northern ice cap did melt, it would cause absolutely no rise in the level of the ocean Equipped with just a GCSE in Dual Science that was news to me (the bit about oceans - not the freezing and contracting) - is there anyone more learned in these matters that could corroborate this? Also (question #2) I remember back in the 1990s there seemed to be a group of scientists who said that a significant portion of the effects of gl…

i am asking for help in my quest. I do not know if it is a noble quest, but it will be a new one, if only i knew where to scout. so specifically addressing the issue---- those of you who have been with this site long enough should be aware of my philosophy about science, if not here: nothing is really scientifically proovable because we cannot proove the efficiency or that we are correctly using the capabilites we have as imprerfect beings (more simply stated: scientifically everything including science is about faith). My quest then is to know is there anyone who with these general beliefs that is not a complete crackpot. Is there any famous or official version of th…

I signed up for this forums because I am missing a bit of information about how simple radio/microwave communications work. I have been under the impression that sound needs air, or other molecules in order to travel. I am under the impression that all radio waves are is super high frequancy sound, and all micro-waves are is, is super high frequancy radio waves. If this is true, then how do these move through the vacume of space? I am problebly missing something in my undertanding in the second paragraph. I hope someone can shed a little light on this for me.

I was reading the Hundred Monkey posts from last month. You can find many instances in history to support the theory. Some of the breakthroughs mentioned are pyramids, the calendar, and time. Each of these breakthroughs was made contiguously in many parts of the world with seemingly no outside influence. I think though that you can find as many (if not more) instances, in the developmental history of man alone, where this "collective" knowledge theory is not supported. The greatest one that comes to my mind is that of metallurgy. Most of Europe and Asia had made great advances in metallurgy while Africa, Australia (Aboriginal), and the Americas still used tools and …

What do you believe will be the next evolutionary step for the human race? I think it may follow this senario;the conscious inhabitants of this planet will be split into two species; humans and in their original and continuing bodies, and uploaded copies of dead humans. Add to that a third category, the independent minds built from the ground up by artificial intelligence programs. And perhaps a fourth; living, embodied humans in an extended condition of enhancement, plugged in (perhaps only some of the time) to the super-net.

If you create a computer simulation so realistic that it takes into account every possible atomic or molecular position and composition- will that sim be the same as the real thing? Leaving out a priori considerations or how powerful the computer would have to be to do such a thing would man finally be able to create anything in this universe? Is this universe a sim of a possible universe? If so imagine who is at the controls and who is writing the program. If you use every atom in the universe to comprise the computer then perhaps you can make a sim as described.

This may seem like a weird question, but is it possible that time is intelligent? Time doesn't just exist like an atom or magnetic field, it actually has information and stores it. Plus it appears to know which direction it is suppose to travel, meaning forward. It kind of follows alot of the common sayings we all use: Time tells all, only time will tell, In good time, time is on our side, timing is everything, so on and so on. We seem to put alot of trust in value in time as we would a friend or family dog. Whens the last time you heard someone say, "gravity heals all wounds"? :bs: or not?

If there were alternate universes, there would be infinate of them for every possible random movement of subatomic particles---- eh? Yeah well I don't think there are anyway. But if there are I bet in one of those universes I am not a loser. I wish I was there. (my depression has nothing to do with my paranoa of banning (recently conquered), I'm not THAT kind of a loser.

I'm trying to find examples of statements that are neither true or false. The criteria for the statement is that it must state something about the nature of an idea or physical object, and it cannot be something subjective (i.e. feeling, emotion, etc). Can you guys think of any?

Lets pretend a 200 pound man is carrying two 10 pound sacks. He comes to a bridge that has a 210 pound maximum limit. Assumming the bridge will fail with his 220 pound load, the man attempts to cross the bridge by tossing one sack into the air and at the point of catching the sack, he throws the second sack up. He repeats the process until he is across. Essentially, the man is never actually carrying more than one sack at a time by what I guess could be described as juggling. Would the gross weight of this load be that of his own weight plus that of the one sack he is carrying, or does the effect of tossing the sack in the air act as a downward force and a…

I've got a question that is kind of weird, so I'm not sure what branch of science it would go under. Anyway, what I am wondering is about the term "freeze". Is that term only used for water or can any element "freeze"? That's basically my question... Any comments are appreciated.

G'day all, I am wondering about the concept of a four dimentional shape. I understand the concept of the "differences" between a two and three dimentional shape, however applying the same knowledge to a four or n-dimentional shape is quite frustrating. I have seen plenty of pictures of four dimentional shapes, and read a multitude of different papers, however I still havent found anyone who has a detailed knowledge upon mapping four dimentional points. Maybe it has something to do with topology or matrixs? Anyone out there that can help me?
