I'm a physics undergrad, and I'm working with a professor who's making a game called CellCraft (almost done!) that is designed to teach students (8th or 9th graders) about science. the game is a real time strategy game that puts you in the place of a cell. So you have to build up your cell, and neutralize free radicals and make ATP and fight viruses and such. Everything was made scientifically accurate, for instance when you make a protein, your cell makes mRNA and sends it to the ribosome and so on. We also have written encyclopedia entries and tutorial screens for everything in the game. In short, I'm wondering what you guys think. Whether it'll work or if yo…

May 18th is HIV Vaccine Awareness Day (HVAD). This annual observance is a day to recognize and thank the thousands of volunteers, community members, health professionals, and scientists who are working together to find a safe and effective HIV vaccine. It is also a day to educate our communities about the importance of preventive HIV vaccine research.

Hi, I have been studying object oriented php lately (basics). I was wondering if it will be sufficient for the material in a computer science degree. I start this fall, and plan to focus on web design. Or should I really learn c++ or java. In short does op php cover enough, that I won't be completely lost with classes that deal with complex algorithms? Thanks

I'm most likely (rotating now) doing my PhD in computational immunology. I am curious as to how feasible it is to do a postdoc in a different scientific field--I was thinking along the lines of mathematical (computational) psychology. I wouldn't think it would be too out there, but it'd be nice to get a feel of the probability of that happening. Any response is much appreciated.

  7. Hello everyone! I found this forum only last night, and have already been browsing through this education sub forum. I am in desperate need of some guidance/insight/advice. Before I go into my particular question(s), I'll start with some info about myself. I'll try not to make it too lengthy. I am a 23 year old female. I recently completed an A.A. degree from my community/state college (Dec. 2010) with a decent GPA (3.77). I took gen. ed. classes, completing the A.A.'s requirements with my major at that time: pre-nursing. I was exposed to the sciences in some of my nursing prerequisite courses: biology I, microbiology, anatomy/physiology I and II, and basic chemistr…

I'm interested in astronomy and planet formation. What would be my best course of action to pursue a career in that area of science? I understand that college might be a good first step, but that's not always the case. I know there are many ways to get from point A to point B. and.....I'm 34, if college was the first step, are their ways to get scholarships in the science field? I know these are broad questions, but I have a passion for this and I think I should pursue it seriously.

  9. Hello everyone, I'm heading to college this upcoming fall and I desire to do research. However, I don't know how to go about getting a position. If any of you have done freshman research, I have a few questions: 1. Did you find a professor to research with before or after you started classes? Or were you offered an opportunity to research on your own? 2. Did you have prior lab work experience (I've taken AP/IB Biology and AP Chemistry, I'm just assuming that isn't considered experience)? If you did, how did you receive it? 3. Are there any books about lab work that I should read before school starts? Any books on scientific thought I should read? I …

Education in United States is getting easier than 90's and 80's. Hi all I have come cross a good university so like to share the information to other members of this forum. One of my friends wants to send his children for both undergraduate and graduate education in the right university for higher education in overseas. However, its not easy to get a admission in the USA, especially its quite competitive and children have to prepare more for that. But thank god, I suppose to come across an organization which is to be of immense help and make the dream of attending a world class institution a reality. So as a new member I therefore recommending my fellow friends here, this…

Hi everyone, Okay, so I am a third year chemistry major trying to decide my career path. Initially, I was set on medical school, but as I'm learning about where medicine is headed, I'm second-guessing my decision (I would be talking MCATs this summer, so I feel like some last-minute reflection is necessary). Not only was I interested in the science aspect of medicine, but I was also intrigued by the entrepreneurial aspect of starting or working in a private practice where there would be a business component to my career. However, as private practices are being bought out by corporate hospitals, I feel as though this aspect (which is very important to me) will be go…

So anyone who knows about this nanoparticle conversion can share their ideas and methods with me.The polymers i need to convert are chitin, pectin, lignin, celloluse. Even if u know any other methods than the above mentioned two, jus share with me. Any help will be greatful to me. Thanking you.

  16. Started by ARIES,

I desperately need a solution to a visual problem I am having. I'm currently doing some research on the feasibility of a new type of device in the Augmented Reality (AR) field. I'm working on a proof of concept for AR visors with a transparent electro luminescent display on one eye. My idea was to adjust the near to eye display with the help of corrective lenses in order to bring the image on the display into focus. While this worked to some degree by having a lens with very high diopter, I was not able to see through the display anymore. Furthermore, the image on the display is not really overlayed onto reality and this creates convergence of the eyes which gives a heada…

  17. I have 3.43 GPA at the community college, because in the beginning I didn't care about my GPA and got a C in Biology and an F in Chem I and a couple of B's, but I retook Chem I and got all A's since then. Will my low GPA affect my chances to get to medical school? I am planning to get all A's and at the 4-year University, but I'm not sure if they will count my GPA form community college.

I'm a high school junior, and I'm struggling to find out what I want to do for a career. I haven't been able to find the answers some of my questions. Hopefully you guys can help me out. Here is what I know: I want to get into medical research (preferably not in academia), involving either disease or drugs. I decided not to become a doctor because I didn't want to dedicate my life to my work (although I am willing to make some sacrifices for my career). When I go to college, I'll probably major in biochemistry, although I am open to other majors if you guys think it would be a better fit. Feel free to add any other advice you may have. Here are the questions …

  23. I was talking to my research supervisor as of late, and he spinned the idea of me becoming a medical doctor. He was suggesting that I go get the medical degree. I'm currently in a laboratory building where a lot of medical doctors are performing scientific research. They don't have a Ph.D, but they still conduct scientific research and lead the research teams. I'm unsure about the idea of going for a medical. It seems like a truckload of non-sense, four years wasted studying stuff I'm not too interested in, and going into a lot of debt. Honestly, I'm really good at studying medical science. I'm really good. However, I tend to not really care about the majority of topi…

  24. So, with the current research group I'm with, the current project is closing up. As such, I'm going to be given an opportunity to do something different. I suspect they could put me at the microscope again, but having spoken to the other guys who have been at the microscope, particular projects can be the same thing over, and over, and over again for a year and a half. As such, I don't want to be looking at the same tissue over and over and over again for another year. I've been looking layer II neurons in the piriform cortex of mouse brain. And that gets really boring after a while. True, I've gained some skills with looking at, finding, refinding, and examining …

  25. I'm torn between majoring in human biology or biophysics. I took all the prerequisites for medical school already, just finishing Organic and need two more semesters of Physics and I'm done with the prereqs, but i need to transfer and can't decide on what to major in. I know biology will better prepare me for medical school, and i like physics but physics is mostly math and physics and no medical school prep which could hurt my mcat score and might not give me a good prep for med school, so when I'm at med school i will have to work a lot harder than if i mojor in human bio that has physiology and other courses already in it. I know I don't want to major in chemistry e…
