I am Indian, I am doing my masters in Molecular microbiology. Some of subjects interesting to me are:population genetics, evolutionary genetics, forensics, biological anthropology, medical microbiology, plant pathology I don't know anything about doing phd abroad. So I would request you to give me some details about: -What all exams I have to write to go? -Which are the best places to go? -which are the best universities? -how many years will it take to finish phd? -what are advantages of doing abroad? -what are financial aspects, scholarships? Thank you for answering

  2. I'm an engineer at a shipyard. I received a degree in Aerospace Engineering, but I wasn't a very good student. I could take tests well and get decent grades, but I did nothing like take advantage of the opportunities I had there, mostly because I wasn't passionate about what I was doing. Now, 12 years later I've discovered my passion, and it's space. Working for JPL on robotic missions to other planets would be my ideal job. I can be happy as en engineer. But I would like to be intimately involved in space exploration. To that end, I want to find an engineering job close to a good astronomy/planetary science school and then possibly take classes and get an advanced d…

  4. I have been trying to find a good course for me to take at university for a few months and earlier i stumbled upon a 'physics and philosophy' course at oxford. Whilst i appreciate the course requires three A's at a2 and is likely to be very costly i was wondering if, discounting those factors, the course would be a good way to spend my time at uni. Physics and Philosophy are studied in parallel during the first three years. The physics corresponds to the more theoretical side of the standard three-year Oxford physics course while the philosophy focuses on modern philosophy and particularly on metaphysics and the theory of knowledge. Students who complete the first three y…

  5. Hello everyone! A little background on myself: I'm currently attending my local CC majoring in physics (gave engineering a one semester try, wasn't my cup of tea). Haha. Teaching is my family business, as my dad, sister, aunt, two cousins, and great aunt are all teachers and my mom is the secretary for a local middle school. I'm a declared physics major, and when I transfer to my local CSU, I will be majoring in physics with an emphasis in teaching (the "general option" as it is called there). I've always known I wanted to become a teacher at some point in my life even while majoring in engineering to become an engineer. Specifically, I'd like to teach the scien…

Hello, i've been to college and passed the exams and interviews for a access course Sciences (Applied Sciences) Access to HE Diploma. And i've been reffered to a career adviser because i do love science but i dont really know what i want to do and in order to get on the course i need to know precisely what course and university and job im going to go for. My perfect job would be in a lab syhthesizing new chemicals. Im also interested in quantum physics and find it fascinating that we only see energy and not reality itself, and the double slit experiment blew me away, as i always thought light travelled in straight lines not like waves. Anyone have any helpful information …

Hi. I have been doing undergrad research in biochem for about 5 months now. However, the summer is approaching and I am thinking about switching to a different lab. I want to do this because 1. my PI did not get the undergraduate grant, and I would have to essentially work there for free 2. The project is not very exciting and the atmosphere, not intellectually stimulating. Should I switch labs to something i am more interested in?.. how will the switch reflect on my grad app...(ie do they want to see commitment to lab). I should also mention that i only have 2 more semesters until graduation. Thanks.

a friend if mine recently asked me this as he knew my plan to read physics at uni, having not started yet i couldnt really answer. So for some clarity, how hard/tough is physics to study for someone with no special natural abilities in math or science?

  10. I think many of the students are not passionate about the real joy of learning science, they more want to learn science just for the sake of completing the homework or just for the sake of getting good grades in exams and are not interested in the research process of science. If you were part of an advisory committee to advice your government or the education minister how would you make students to get more attracted to science?

I'm doing my research into what universities have decent sounding physics/science departments, but the selection and stats are mind boggling. Can anyone give some insight? What universities have a good reputation in physics? (In the UK)

I am going back to highschool, after 3 years of bad teachers, bad advice, bad choices and laziness I have just finished year 12 (in Australia) but I am going back to do Year 11 (then year 12) chemisty, physics and mathematics. The problem is i don't have much confidence in my knowledge of the topics and I would like to learn as much as I can, so that I will be able to achieve the best possible grade. I am not sure what books would be worth my time in these topics and what books would be a waste of money could you please help me? I would also like to learn about aerodynamics and meteorology, and would like to hear about good books on those topics Thanks heap…

In about a year or so I plan on obtaining a graduate certificate in higher education in conjunction with what I am already doing in my current studies. Part of the assessment in this involves designing and implementing something within a course offered at the university. Although this is a fair ways off, I'm told I need to start brain storming now, which has got me to thinking about the broader state of science education at university / college level. The point of this thread is not to help me with my assignment; if anything I hope to maybe glean some inspiration and insight. Rather, what I aim to do is discuss the wider issue regarding the way we teach courses and w…

  16. Hi, I am a freshman in high school and I have a strong interest in possibly turning the application of software engineering/artificial intelligence to medical situations (especially cancer patients). There have been three occurrences all in the past year in which cancer has affected one of my family members. Therefore I have an amount of motivation to do something about it. My question is what can I do to prepare myself for this in terms of what classes to take, what languages to learn, how to learn them, what type of post high school education would best suit me, ect. I realize that I am thinking about this a little bit early, however, my age only restricts me from takin…

hey guys, as a SPM candidate(GCE O-level equivalent), the exam considered to be not too hard and give me much free time. (currently doing good grade too) Thus, I can study(for fun) math. I don't know which order should I start, I mean looking in math playlist on Khan Academy... There:- - Arithmetic (mastered) - Developmental math - Pre-algebra(currently here) - Algebra - Geometry - Trigonometry - Probability - Statistics - Pre-Calculus - Calculus - Differential Equations - Linear Algebra - Vi Hart hope anyone can give right order for this, I mean of course the playlist before needed for the next playlist... etc.. p.s. study this because seems…

I'm 15, about to be 16, and I want to become a scientist. I want to be a biological researcher, specifically studying venom and it's uses in medicine. I love reptiles (I have 5 snakes) and want to work with them in some way, and I've always been fascinated by venomous reptiles and venom in general. I would go as far to say it's almost an obsession. I also want to travel while doing this research. I know I would probably need a masters or a PhD in biology or zoology, or maybe pharmacology? Any advice would be fantastic.

Hi all, I checked the rules and think I am ok to post this. Sorry if I missed something. I wrote a free iPhone/iPod/iPod app to help in learning algebra. It let's you work problems visually and you can use it as you might use a calculator to help with homework, etc. If that sounds interesting you can check it out here: http://itunes.apple....d488623677?mt=8 Thanks, David

Hey all, I am hoping to do an Access to Higher Education diploma at college soon, and then go on to University to study Physics. I have been out of school for many years, so my maths is pretty sub-standard after years of neglect and working in very non-mathematical industries. (fractions baffle me, and basic mental division and subtraction are difficult). College Access to HE Diploma will take me upto GCSE Grade C level in math, but I'm planning to take it further to A grade and do A-levels in math and physics to satisfy Uni entry standards. I want to start studying now at home to get my skills up to a reasonable standard before I go to college in 5 m…

I'm looking at completing my undergraduate as a double major in mathematics and computer science, but I want to do computational chemistry. The school offers a graduate degree in mathematics that specializes in scientific computing. From the perspective of a researcher would this be sufficient to publish papers in the field of quantum computational chemistry, or would I be looking at getting the second degree in chemistry or biochemistry as well?

  22. I was accepted into a PA program that starts on May 21st. But my first choice school starts in September and they wait-listed me (ahh!) and my second choice school starts in August and has rolling admissions but still hasn't contacted me (it's been about a month though, that's pretty normal, it should be soon that they contact me). I'm on a super time crunch and don't want to wait until May to call these programs and tell them to hurry up because I don't want to disrespect the program which accepted me. Would you call them? Ask them for the status of my application? I've already emailed the school I'm wait-listed at saying that they're my first choice and basi…

Greetings! Moments ago I posted my Topic on my particle accelerator which made me think about the discrimination that I receive for attempting to undertake advanced, complex, and seemingly "Too Mature" projects and ventures. I am 13, in 8th grade, have skipped a grade, and have hopes to attend Carol Martin's Gatton Academy for Science and Mathematics. Instead of telling me to slow down and to have more of a "Regular life" I want people to realize that I just value my education the most and want it to be pristine, prime, and potent. My young age inhibits me from being able to learn: Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Physics, or Computer Science. I want to learn the necessa…

Hey guys, Don't know if you can help, but I'm doing a literature review at the moment for my bachelorthesis. Since it's for my bachelor, the review doesn't have to be exhaustive, but I have to build a framework and discuss some relevant literature in the field. Part of my project is the relationship between large organizations and their foreign subsidiaries. I'm searching for literature right now, but my question is: There are thousands of articles available on that topic. Without reading them all, how can I develop an understanding of the most recent, and most influential findings? How do I know which articles contain the leading theories in the f…
