Anyone here familiar with Citrix Presentation Server? Until this morning, I was not. I've spent much of today trying to learn as much as I can about it. It has been proposed as a solution to an issue we have in training as pertains to training delivery in Asia and Europe. There is a concern that in our classroom sessions the bandwidth and network capacity for a few thousand of these users will be too low to successfully hit the server where the training is loaded. To complete the courses, however, the users must complete the exercises loaded on this server. (There are a few complexities and specifics that I cannot go into, but our options are pretty limited to resolve…

I wouldn't call this a comp.sci question, but perhaps someone knows this? I don't usually use macs but I've got a mac for testing mac applications and installed the bootcamp to get dual boot for windows. The choice of bootcamp was that it seemed to be the quickest soultion at the time although it was a beta software. Now it is claimed that the beta license is expire at the end of the year. Does anyone know if the bootloader itself will actually stop to function, so that it won't be possible to boot the PC or switch between partitions? or is it just the reconfiguration via the bootcamp application that will no longer work? Ie given that no changes need to be made i…

I've been trying to switch to Emacs lately. Depending on who you talk to Emacs is either the ultimate programmer's editor or a bloated piece of crap. Does anyone here use Emacs, and if so, how do you like it? I'm certainly enjoying the integrated REPL and the ability to evaluate the current buffer.

Computer speed and Internet speed? Will a home computer ever be able to render every shot in Shrek 3 in under a second? Will my home internet connection ever be going 1TB/s?

Prepare yourself for a dumb question... Having used Java up to this point, I've tried to switch over to C/C++ because that is the dominant language I've run across in commercial applications. http://spehome.com/document.php Can someone explain the first line to me? The part about importing the library? I successfully configured my IDE (Dev-C++) to include the right files (include and lib folders), but I'm getting massive errors of dozens of types and variables being undeclared. So I'm assuming it has to do with the "Import the Library" part. Is "Importing the Library" different than configuring your directories so that it can find the .lib and .h f…

Where can I download this? I'm not going to use for anything dangerous; I'm just going to use it to prank some of my friends. Edit: If you don't know where to download shark I'll be happy with any trojan making progam that's easy to use. Edit: I'd also like to know how I can make an administrative account on my Windows XP/NT/2000 from the command prompt. Can someone tell me how? (this question has nothing to do with the one about the Trojan making programs, in case you were wondering)

Well, Leopard, the newest version of MacOS X, has been out for awhile now. Who's using it, and what do you think? I love Spaces, the new virtual desktop system, and from a developer perspective the operating system is great, particular a new developer-oriented feature called DTrace which lets you peek inside running executables, and the operating system itself.

Quick question guys. I downloaded Limewire and I was so thrilled there was one music download thing that was free and didnt have viruses. I was quickly proved wrong though as when I tried downloading some Foo Fighters my computer froze and guess what? Now my question is, what really beats me is why Limewire puts viruses on it’s software, whats the point? Now after getting multiple viruses I am never going to upgrade the Limewire software. cause a) I have to pay and b) it has viruses. And BTW anyone know any music downloading software that dosent have viruses or sites that wont screw up my computer every time I download a song? And anyway how did they get the viruses a…

I recently inherited a laptop. It has a 2.7 GHz processor, but only 192 MB of ram. Since the battery life is a little under 2 hours, and I figure that this amount of ram could not possibly take full advantage of the cpu speed, I decided to underclock the processor to save battery life until I find some more memory. My question is how slow can I go without noticing a huge difference? From my memory of PC specs from a few years ago, I am guessing that a computer with 192 MB would have no more than 800-1000 MHz, but I don't know if this is optimum.

So, I accidentally left my flash drive in my pants, which I put in the washing machine. I haven't tried to plug in the flash drive, but I've read there are some things I could do. One thing is simply put the flash drive in a gallon of distilled water for a couple of days; afterwards, let it dry out for a few more days. I'm not too sure what to do, but I need that data.

My company (a large education corporation) decided today that it will no longer allow web-based email or instant messaging access from any of its networks. That means blocking everything from GMail and Hotmail to AOL Instant Messenger and Windows Messenger. The decision came from the corporation legal team, amidst growing concerns over outside attacks and malware. I was surprised to learn that this is a growing concern for companies. I had been under the impression that malware was on the decline. Between anti-virus programs, pop-up blockers and anti-spyware products, I can't remember the last time I had malicious code on any of my half-dozen computers. I have …

I spotted this article about scrapping the existing Internet and rebuilding it to address concerns that weren't in existence when it first began. Much of it's architecture has been a cobbling-together process and many feel that we could do better with a complete restructuring. In a way, the original intent was not unlike building a beautiful house in a small community where there is little need for security. Everyone knows each other and trusts each other. But then the community grew very quickly and soon the beautiful home has a completely different look and purpose and now, rather than continue to fix the leaks and locks it might be better to build something more…

Ruby is the most programmer-friendly language I know of, with a syntax that tries to read like English as much as possible. It has all the features you'd expect of a modern language (strong typing, garbage collection, object orientation) with some nice power features that only language zealots like me seem to care about. If you're interested in learning Ruby you can do it straight from your web browser without installing or configuring any software. Helpful lessons are built straight in, and you can do them all from the web (neato!) http://tryruby.hobix.com/ The guy who made this site has some fun downloadable software aimed at younger students designed to t…

I see CS as something which is certainly "nichefying" (to use a Chris Anderson neologism) In the niches, I see immense progress! I also see minimal adoption rates. Perhaps the two best languages to grace the near-mainstream of late are Python and Ruby. Recently I've been working with another, more niche language known as Erlang which deals with the increasingly prevalent problems of concurrency and fault-tolerant distribution. I consider all of these languages to be immensely progressive. However, I've been reading Steve Yegge's blog. He's renowned among the computer science community, works for Google, and has an excellent blog. Recently he "ported" the …

I have an important question and if anyone can give answers or hints it would be great. I'm moderately familiar with vb and I can write a lot of things, and when I can't I go and get some free sources to get me going.. but so far I've had this feeling that vb doesn't have a lot of potential for science-like apps. I will be investing some time into learning a new language in the next 6 months and I want to know what would be the best possible choice to go with considering that I'm intending the skill to be used for science/research. That means working with data, modelling and being able to write apps that would be used to communicate with external instruments and such…

I am currently in my second year of my schools Microsoft-heavy networking program. I'll have an Associates in Networking Administration in the spring. I will be coming back for 2 more years and am at an impasse on what to go for. I really dislike the networking programs here because they are Microsoft Server heavy and I don't want to have skills that are a dime a dozen. I can either get my Bachelors in Networking Administration and be locked into the Windows Server/ Active Directory family of products, or get a degree in programming and most likely not be subject to any kind of "vendor lock-in" with my skills. So I am Asking for advice from the people who kno…
