  2. I'm looking for someone who can build user interfaces in Java. I have built this program http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/5726/treesfb8.png It draws trees from variables (it's not quite that straightforward but I will go over the details with you in private chat) that are input to describe how the tree grows. The inputs in my opinion are small in comparison to the endless variety they can create. This is BlueJ's description of my class dependency's http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/2109/treedepskj9.png Once each tree is created whiten the program is stored an array list that contains all the branches for that tree. What I am looking for is someone…

  3. Hey guys, I had an idea for a game - the basic 'scenes' are similar to a FPS, though no shooting is involved. It's more like "walk and evade obstacles" kinda game with an amusing twist to it. I'm a decent PHP/mySQL programmer, but I'm NOT good in games. I want someone who's good in either Flash or anything similar... It's relatively very simple with potential to become a bit more complicated after an initial "engine" is up. Anyone up for the challenge? I'll explain in more details if I find anyone good for it... otherwise, it's going to remain a surprise for the forum. also, if you have any programs you know that allow people like me with programming …

This has befuddled me for a while. Isn't analog by it's very nature capabable of storing vastly more information than binary digits? Why is analog considered a "thing of the past"? Consider, rather than a bit with two states, a tiny analog device (approximately the same size as a bit in a normal PC) to control the flow of electricty through a circuit. Let's say that each degree rotated represented a different state, the amount of current allowed to pass through. Thus, 360 degrees would represent 360 numbers. Or, you could use half-degrees, and have 720 numbers represented, or quarter-degrees, with 1440 numbers, etc. You get the idea... Of course, you would h…

  7. Hello! I've just joined here and have a few questions. First question is: I understand that a lot of comp sci people are very articulate with their opinions or with whatever they have to say. I was wondering what I should read or really pay close attention to so that I can too be able to say what I mean without stuttering or searching for the right words to say? Second Question: I'm scared at the Math courses inherent in all of the comp. sci. courses. (e.g. discrete math and linear algebra) Any tips as to how I can survive such classes? Thanks.

My shift keys periodically decide to not work. Yes, shift keyS as in both of them at the same time. It seems to be completely random. I used to be able to "fix" it by pulling out the usb cord and putting it back in. Occasionally it seems to start working if I pound the key a few times, but not always, and that might just be a coincidence. Even though I don't think its a hardware issue, since they both always crap out at the same time, I tried cleaning out everything. I tried replacing batteries, and my main instinct was that there is something wrong with the driver, but I can't seem to find a replacement for that. There are only two things that seem to consistently f…

I can't stand it anymore... Everytime I try to do something admin-y in the control panel, try to change something in the device manager, etc, it just crashes. Also (and this is turning into an annoying persistent problem) whenever I'm connected to my uni's wireless network, it periodically stops working, without disconnected; it says it's a "limited connection" like I'm getting kicked off the local network without actually disconnecting from it - which could actually be my uni's fault. But, on my gf's XP computer, I can just reconnect to the network, and there's no problem. On my computer, if I disconnect from the network, it gets removed from the lis…

Hi everybody, this is my first post on SFN, and I'm really glad to be here. I'll try to make some good threads, posts, etc. And lend what help I can to those who need it. So, I'm a real computer geek at heart, but I'm essentially a gamer primarily, so most of my threads will be about such things. Anyway, this thread addresses the importance of DirectX 10. As some might know, this is a Vista - exclusive piece of software that is really the gateway to nice effects for all games in the future. But, so far, its only been used in 3 games, and has been frowned upon by many gamers for being a Vista - exclusive, due to the fact that using Vista drastically reduces framerate…

Hi there, I've recently taken to looking for a new graphics card, mostly because my graphics card is...well, let's put it this way: I have to play Halo 1 on low. I'm a little tired of all my friends making fun of me for having a terrible graphics card, and not to mention I want to play some serious games. Can someone help me? I'm thinking of getting a Radeon, or NVIDIA. My price range is around 60 dollars, I can't really spend anymore, thanks to a lightsabre related science project that cut me down from what I've been saving up. Here are some of the games I want to play Half-Life 2 Half-Life 2: episode 1, episode 2 Half-Life 2: Lost Coast BioShock (at least …

I'm surprised there hasn't been any comment on last week's announcement that Microsoft is porting Windows XP to the XO+ (the One Laptop Per Child box, also known as the hundred-dollar laptop). http://money.cnn.com/2008/05/15/technology/microsoft_olpc.fortune/index.htm?postversion=2008051519 According to the article OLPC president Walter Bender quit in protest during the negotiations, but Negroponte seems determined. Both sides seem to have a valid point. If you're going to really get this thing out there, having Windows on it will help. But it's certainly a double-edged sword, "enslaving" millions more children to a proprietary OS. What do you all think…

Computers seem to foist on you some sort of vague impression of doom that must arise from simply switching off a computer without going through the shut down sequence. I believe I've encountered messages saying that I would "lose memory" or some such thing, and the machine always throws a tantrum when you turn it back on. What exactly happens when you shut down and why is it so important? Will it really damage my computer if I just hold that power button down to turn it off?

  16. I'm researching the issue of the creation of activity and performance data through the use of monitoring technologies within workplace information systems. Specifically, I'm focusing on the potential for such data to be processed into biographical information that relates to the performance of an individual - and thus the potential for the breach of privacy outside of the normal legislative concern of 'personal data'. The context of my study lies within the military, who culturally have some interesting perspectives on the concept of privacy. The attached link is to a survey that would take about 4 minutes to complete. If this subject is of interest to you I'd be delig…

Hey guys- So I've been pretty bored so far this summer and have been dicking around on the internet when I came upon a really neat trick. Turning an mp3 into a png. Check it out, I've added links to 4 different png's for you to try. CONVERTING AN MP3 TO A PNG: 1. Open your mp3 in a sounds editor and reduce the quality so that the file is smaller than whatever websites file size limit is that you want to upload to. (completely optional) 2. Save the file as an mp3, then rename it to "XYZ.raw" (you must have "Hide extensions for known file types" unchecked in the folder options to do this) 3. Open the file in photoshop, and save it as a PNG. CONV…

If you made a programming language, what would it be? I'd be aiming to create a context free, third generation programming lanugage. I would like to implement the Actor Model in a means which is a superset of the underlying language, which I would desire to be pure object oriented. Pure OO languages and languages based around the Actor Model have some striking similarities (the first pure OO language, Smalltalk, was based in part around the Actor Model) The Actor Model assumes a pure-Actor language. And indeed Actors work much like objects, save for concurrency and message processing control. I believe objects should be the underlying data primitive, but…

Though it only searches Wikipedia at the moment. This could be the formula that Microsoft could scoop up to tackle Google. It factors in semantics and gives you a greater diversity of hits than your typical query. Here's an article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080512/wr_nm/powerset_dc http://www.powerset.com/ Here's a list of top results for a search on "green": Green is a color, the perception of which is evoked by light having a spectrum dominated by energy with a wavelength of roughly 520–570-nm. In the subtractive color system, it is not a primary color, but is created out of a mixture of yellow and blue, or yellow and cyan; it is considered one of…

http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2008/03/05/compsci Well that's good news! Of course, given the current financial aid crisis, they may be some seriously broke students for a while, but at least enrollments are up. One thing I think the story misses is that Computer Science majors today are not like Computer Science majors ten years ago. They're aiming for R&D jobs, or advanced product development, not routine client-server, business-aspected programming positions. THOSE careers are now covered largely by IT programs in for-profit institutions and online schools.

I'm a computer science major and this is my junior year and up until now I didn't have any troubles with courses I took. So far I've had two courses of Problem Solving with C++, Assembly Language, and Data Structures, I've made A's on all of them. But this semester I've been taking Operating Systems and Artificial Intelligence and this stuff just seems over my head, I'm studying really hard, but I don't understand the material, especially in OS class. My average from tests and projects in both classes is a borderline between C and D. I'm thinking what if the rest of the courses are going to be even harder than this? Should I start thinking about changing my major or try a…

  22. I understand that complete artificial self-replication (replicating the CPU and memory and various electrical components) is an incredibly difficult task and may take a while longer to achieve, presumably using highly progressed machine learning. However, complete self-replication is not needed to have effective mechanical self-replication. A central server or computer would handle the commands to robotic arms (or robots), and each robotic arm would have just the sufficient capabilities to manufacture simple wires, primitive motors, and maybe a a radio receiver. Robots on assembly lines are already quite capable of this task. The physical range and number of the…

Was HAL, the computer featured in Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey, a sentient being, or merely the product of "brute force" computation? Since his debut in 1968, HAL has served as the guidepost for artificial intelligence research. More than any other character in fiction, he has represented the enormous potential of the field, and has helped to launch the carriers of many an AI researcher. Calm, rational, and eerily human, HAL would certainly pass the Turing test. But was he actually a conscious being -- an emergent byproduct of some robust future algorithm -- awake and aware of his surroundings? Or was he instead a masterpiece of human simulation, produ…

Programming Languages: Application and Interpretation (PDF) The book is the textbook for the programming languages course at Brown University, and over 25 universities use part or all of the book. It's released under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 United States License. I've been using it in conjunction with some other books to improve my knowledge of languages and compilers. This is definitely the best free resource on the subject I've found. Enjoy!

  25. I have two questions that have been on the back of my mind for a while (I'm still using a single core computer... I'm a little behind the times): 1) When computer vendors (such as BestBuy, Gateway) use the term "Quad Core [model number], 2.40 GHz" does this imply that all four cores are 2.40 GHz or collectively? Such as: http://www.gateway.com/systems/series/529598059.php 2) When I program software, what do I need to do (if anything) to get my program to take advantage of multiple processors? If you're wondering, I use C++ in .NET (I also use other SDKs if that would be of any help).
