I have an assignment where I'm supposed to implement a simple vacuum cleaner agent with a randomized agent function. Basically there's a world with 36 rooms in a 6 x 6 grid. The vacuum cleaner determines which square is it in and whether there is dirt in the square. It can choose to move left, move right, suck up the dirt, or do nothing. I'm new to python and I'm having really hard time to figure out what to do and how to do this. This is all I've done so far and I kind of have a mental block on what do do next. Specifically how would I implement the simulations of sucking dirt or perform the movements left, right, up, or down. If anyone can push me in the right di…

Hi, I need to make a big-theta notation on an algoritm I made. The algoritm is soposed to find factors of a number. This is the algoritm implemented in java: public class factor { public static void main (String argv[]) { int number =(Integer.parseInt(argv[0])); int counter = 0; for(counter = 1 ; counter <= number/2 ; counter++) { if(number % counter == 0)System.out.println(counter); } System.out.println(number); } } I figured the theta notation to this is: O(N) The problem is now that i need to express big theta as a function of of the length of N (the number of bits in N). I have no idea what I am supposed to do here? I would greatly appreci…

me and my roommate are trying to play WC3 custom games on battle.net. I can host games, and people can join them. Port forwarding is set up for that. Henri can also host games, and people can join them. but sometimes neither of us can join a game that the other is hosting. We have made it work in the past, but cant figure out any pattern as to how. we have played a game, it ended, and then we go to start another game and it wont let one of us join. No changes made to our settings in between. I am at a loss, and so I turn to SFN for guidance. I can provide details of the portforwarding i have set up if that would help.

Anybody check out Cuil (pronounced "cool"), the new search engine from former Google employees? http://www.cuil.com Unfortunately it's been up and down all day, and reportedly very sporadic in news accounts as well. They do have a Firefox module (for that search thingie in the upper-right corner), which is nice, I like the way they organize search results to take advantage of widescreen monitors. Here's a screen shot: That's from this Ars Technica article: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080728-ex-googlers-launch-biggest-search-engine-on-the-web.html They say it has the largest index, with over 120 billion pages, but last week (not coinciden…

  12. Of desktops and laptops, which would you prefer, or which caters most to your needs. I personally prefer desktops because they are cheaper and much easier to work with, and much more easily upgradable, and tend to have better performance than laptops. As I am a hardcore gamer, that's very important. But, of course, you can do a great deal more with than just gaming (video's, work, calculator programs, security, memory space, etc.) But, that's just me. What do you prefer?

Pangloss's thread about apple and the iphone has made me create this offshute thread... Mainly I want to know what you think of the software (which even in these modern times is controlled greatly by the OS) that your phone uses. I for many years now have used Sony Ericsson phones, I'm a bit of a fan... but in the last 2 years of owning my phone it's crashed a few times, which is rather annoying, and it's certainly not the most shiney of the OSs. It's also really quite closed and the amount of thrid party software available is not that good and not cheap... I've known people with windows mobile phones, and my dads got one atm, they seem ok ish very power hung…

Hi all! As a person who has not a Computer Science degree(I am a poor web developer!),but having much desire to learn as much as I can about CS topics,I have a (maybe easy:doh: ) question about the recursive algorithm that solves the "Towers of Hanoi" puzzle. I can understand that generally, having n discs and A,B,C pegs, the strategy is: 1.move (n-1) discs from A to B. 2.move nth disc from A to C. 3.move the (n-1) discs from B to C.Done! but this is implemented in whatever procedural language with a function, and the one thing that changes,is the order of arguments.OK so far but how do we assure that algorithm does recursively the moves that must be done and not somet…

  16. So, as of today, when I go to YouTube, I get a screen with the YouTube header (logo, four tabs, and search bar), and the video title... but the rest of the screen is blank... nothing but white. I get the audio, but cannot see (and hence, use) the controls, nor see the normal stuff at the right of the screen (like the description of who uploaded the video, notes, and related content..) Any ideas? It's sort of strange. I don't own this system, and don't have administrator rights, but I've been using it for 2 years, and have never had a problem previously. I'm not trying to hack this thing, I just want previous functionality returned. Can I check or try s…

  17. Okay, my parents own the domain name http://www.schottlender.net (after our last name) for 5+ years and use it for their company. They recently received this email: This smells like a scam, but it can also be real (why the heck not, smoeone just registers a brand and then contacts us to charge money, sounds perfectly cruelly logical to me, sadly). Does anyone have any idea what to do with this? How can I be sure if this is a scam or not? Is this even legal? meh. Help! My last name is being stolen!! ~moo

I'm new to Python, and while doing homework I got stuck on this little problem. We were supposed to output various sequnces of numbers using for loops and range functions. I did all of them except the last one which I can't figure out. How do you output the following sequence: [1, 2, 6, 24, 120, 720]?

Interesting bit of controversy brewing for the iPhone today over the revelation that apparently it takes a screen shot every time you hit the Home button. It does this so that it can make that cool wipe effect that leads you into the next program, and when it's finish it supposedly deletes the shot, but apparently it can be (and has been) recovered by forensics experts and used as evidence. http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/09/hacker-says-sec.html

Now this one im not sure can be done but like my dad always says "the only stupid question is the one thats not asked". My little cousin (who has been living with us for most of this year) has a bit of a download-a-holic problem and using up the limited upload/download allocation, which is 20Gb per month. It should suit us fine and last the entire month. My question, is it possible to limit what speed internet she can access via the wireless network? So that our download limit is not being assaulted so fast. If you need router specs let me know i will get those for you. Cheers Crozius

Did Google finally become the world's most evil company? It knows an awful lot about us already, and now it also knows what we look like. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/02/AR2008090200873.html
