VB has perfectly serviceable IF statements. I think Klaynos has the best answer here so far.

Say I have a digraph with any given number of nodes and I am told to find the path matrix of exactly length 3. What exactly does this mean? I know the matrix is represented as a 2D array of size n x n, depending on the number of nodes in the digraph. I also know that R3(path length 3) = R * R * R. So if anyone could please respond as to what is meant by an exact path matrix length and possibly show an example, that would be great.

Interesting idea. It's a device based on off-the-shelf parts that's powered by your cellphone OS and adds an external camera and projector that you wear on a neck lanyard. The projector projects an interface onto any surface in front of you, including your hand. So you hold out your hand and a phone keypad appears on your fingers, and you can punch them to dial a number. Hold out your wrist and a watch appears on it to show you the time. Or if you're talking to someone the system can project personal information about that individual right on their clothing (lol). Or if you're shopping the system can recognize the data and provide more information about it, check it…

  4. Physics most probably allows for non-classical computation methods, which makes parallel computation of all possible inputs - like becoming more and more realistic quantum computers. I think we should widely discuss if it's a real threat and if yes - how to design cryptosystems resistant to such eventualities. Especially that we wouldn't know if someone would use it... Here is one discussion of this type: http://www.ecrypt.eu.org/stream/phorum/read.php?1,1021,page=1 I wanted to start here one. Please share Your opinions and links to interesting discussions on this topic. There is know Shor's algorithm which breaks RSA. Generally cryptosystems have always a 'we…

Has anyone played with iPhone app development? I have an idea I really want to try and build and sell, I think it'll only take 20 hours of code or so (plus time to learn the UI libs) but I don't have a Mac - has anybody tried this or know of good alternative ways to build iPhone apps? A friend of mine has a phone he can test stuff on, but I don't know much about the process and haven't seen too many ways to write code without a Mac (I'll get a cheap one if I have to) and I am curious about potential pitfalls and such. TIA

does anyone know How or what s/ware I may need to switch off the Double click "feature" on a laptop mouse pad? I`m happy using the buttons to do this as you would on a regular mouse, and find that the accidental touching of the pad twice making it click on things you don`t want it to Very Annoying! oh yeah, it`s a Dell Latitude c400 if that helps.

Does anyone know of a good network analyzer for windows? I find when I hit a bottleneck either in downloading/uploading I tend to use some pretty rudimentary techniques for trying to figure out the source - cap something else and see if it boots the speed of the problem connection by a comparable amount. This is pretty ineffective, and I also would really like to know what the through-put is on the various apps I have running on my computer. I use the free ZoneAlarm for my firewall which at least sort of knows what's accessing the net, but I'd really like something more robust. Anyone have any suggestions?

Maybe this belongs in biology, but I think that it has applications to AI. There is a spider, Portia labiata, that is shockingly intelligent (for a spider, anyways). Portia is a spider that hunts spiders, often tackling pray much more powerful than itself, and apparently relying on its brainpower for much of its success. Portia has excellent vision, surpassing some birds and mammals, but in a very limited field. However, its good eyes can swivel to scan an area, and this seems to be part of how it can solve problems. Interestingly, some of Portia's maneuvering can last hours and continue despite losing sight of its prey (for Portia, out of sight is not out of mind). Also,…

Isn't it true that computers don't read anything but machine code? I'm having an argument with someone about that. He thinks computers don't read machine code except perhaps the BIOS. I've got a degree in computer science and I'm pretty sure I remember learning that the only information that goes through the CPU is instructions written in machine code. I'm right... right?

I'm planning on doing some work with machine vision. I'm not looking at anything to complex like the AI personal assistants and such, or to simple like for industrial and manufacturing purposes(by simple I mean cost effective!) Thinking on the lines of like an atom with a ten gig static ram drive(maybe more but size is important) and Aptina high res image sensors; so cost effective! Looking at simply doing the exact opposite of what's being done with the current animation studios and gaming engines in terms of softcoding. Reading shade gradients, extrapolating the lighting. Observing stencil shading, defining object space. Reading shading gradients, defining object,…

  18. Just musing about the boundaries of Artificial Intelligence, I wonder if AI programming can ever take a machine to the point that it would be able to appreciate the sounds of a waterfall, or a gently murmuring stream or be able to appreciate the works of Wagner. Or to be happy when the UK win gold medals in the Olympics. In short, can our emotions ever be felt and appreciated by a computer, and could it then make mistakes based upon emotion?

Computer programs called simulators are used in development of new computer to check if the computer logic ( circuits / gates etc. ) perform as desired. The computer can simulate a non existent new design to determine if it is correctly designed. It also can therefore be made to simulate itself. Can the computer then be said to "self aware", an element of consciousness?

  22. If an instruction takes 1,000 lines of code to write, using the normal 2 states (1s and 0s), how many lines would the same instruction take to write by a future computer able to use 8 states (various increments of "on/off"). Also, how much would processing speed increase? Thirdly, would storage capacity (hard drives, disks) be increased any due to the extra states?

http://measurementlab.net/ Network performance testing tools, ala DSL Reports. One of the tools lets you test to see if your ISP is blocking BitTorrent traffic, for example. Others let you test to see if your traffic is being prioritized, or if certain applications are given degraded performance. Looks interesting but it's a bit slammed at the moment due to featuring on Google News, Slashdot and other sources. Might have to give it a day or two to settle down.
