Hey all, I was thinking about making a program that would generate a steady sound at a inputted frequency. It would play the frequency at a random time between 0 and x seconds, probably something like ten, from pressing "Start". If you'd hear the frequency, you'd press a button. It's purpose would be to test if you can hear that given frequency. Now, I think I'll manage everything, except the GUI, which I can live without of, and the sound generator. Anybody have any tips? I'm gonna use C++. Cheers, Gabe

I am now a science writer, and I have been focusing on the science of photography. An excerpt of my work can be found at: http://luminous-landscape.com/essays/art2.shtml See also Photophys.com At present I am concentrating on computational photography and the computational camera. These topics are the subject of courses in Computer Science Departments. What are the best textbooks, if any, in this area? Can you suggest good references? I am aware of online class notes from various universities.

So I am just trying to further understand how a computer works down to the core, and am mostly trying to come up with the stuff myself, and I have come to the conclusion that their are two ways a calculator and an alu works. 1. the device has the answers to problems already stored in its memory, and when you type a problem, its the same thing as typing in the address in a computer, but this would take a lot of memory, and everything just being bits, its very complex to me. maybe someone can elaborate on this if this is it. 2. the device actually does the problem itself, through logic gates or something, I dont know, maybe someone could help me on this if this is …

Please note: the title is a joke. Click here if you don't get it Shadow asked a number of questions about why I don't like C++ and don't think new programmers should learn it. That said, I do think there are cases where C++ is useful, and depending on what you want to program it might be a good choice. So hopefully we can get into a little about that here instead of disturbing yourdad's thread. There's a few reasons: 1) Many companies are heavily invested in C++ with massive legacy codebases. Transitioning to another language is too costly. 2) C++ remains a great language for developing the core functionality of applications which you intend to…

How do file formats work and how do you create new file formats? I couldn't find books which discuss file formats. There are many books on computer architecture/organization, data structures, compilers etc but I couldn't find any books which teach the basics of file formats and how to create file formats. So if anyone could recommend any, this would be highly appreciated.

I have been having this computer trouble, wich I just cant find out what it is all about. If anyone can help me with this, that would be magnanimous, thank you. So, I go on the MIT opencourseware, I download a ZIP file, I try to extract all files and make a new one, but it still seems to stay the same. The icon has changed from the zipped up folder to a 1/4'th open folder, but other than that, its just the same. I try to click it, and what happens is I just go through the seperate documents in it, like the readme. right next to the Welcome, and the Ocweb, etc.... and when I click one of those, it just gives me a whole bunch of text and html. commands and stuff along …

Hi Apologies if this is a daft question (it probably is). I've searched and haven't found an answer... I'm trying to run a simulation that I've programmed in Matlab. It generates very large and small numbers that can't be represented and so get stored as +/-Inf and further operations on these then become NaN. I can't think of any way to get round this. Is there any way of representing these numbers that would mean I could work on them (on computer), however convoluted? Any help gratefully received, especially if explained as if to a small child

Binary Space Partioning or BSP, for those who don't know, is a readily used method for creating walls and other such objects within a 3D gaming engine or it is also used in Computer Aided Design(CAD). BSP is a fast and effective space partition that does not require much processing time during rendering. It is good for primitive shapes but can become unstable as shape angles begin to decrease to a sharp point or geometry becomes to complex. I opened this thread to inquire on other methods for accomplishing this task. I am interested in methods that may even say be slightly more consuming of processor time with the benefit of creating more complex shapes. I am f…

  16. I bought a 'puta recently and a laptop was an appealing option. The only problem with a laptop is it lacks power for the price I'm willing to pay! So today I was thinking, well maybe I could just se up a web cam and point it at my monitor and program it to accept voice commands over the phone. Well that's kind of dumb, right! Why would anybody go and do a thing like that. So I added a VR helmet or a monitor. This still didn't sit right; there's always remote desktop. Well I'm pretty sure there are currently some pretty major limitations on remote desktop. First off, and correct me if I'm wrong, the hosts RAMDAC is not transmitted via internet to the guests compute…

Continuation of this thread: Back when I was thinking about it I discussed it at length with my father, who has experience in the psychological/neurological field. But that was a long time ago, and I don't remember the arguments anymore. I wrote him a message, and I'll post his reply here. From a purely layman point of view, I believe that you do need emotions for consciousness. When I think of the brain processing information, I divide it into 3 sub processes; 1. Input: Be that sensory input, some kind of experience, anything. I even consider a though to be an input, even though it's self generated. 2. Categorization: The brain runs the input through som…

Immorality is the most desired commodity in the world. Religions mine it, process it, and sell it to the masses, gaining both huge profits and preponderant power in world affairs. The Christian religion, for example, promises an afterlife in heaven with Jesus and his celebrated Father. Islam promises about the same thing: Mohammed will be up there, too, along and a bunch of dancing virgins. But that kind of immortality is not for everyone. What constitutes immortality? How would you know if you’re immortal or not. Woody Allen said once that immortality is a hard sell because it will take forever to prove its worth. But wait. Is flesh and blood immortality really what …

Well I'd rather not take MathML and smash it together with Unicode to make something that not so greatly resembles LaTex. Hello, so I am trying to make a program just for kicks, but I am just lost, I have read several little articles and step by step instructions, but It just never seems to work. Ive learned a bit of programming language {not sure what, just stuff I have picked up reading}, and I keep typing this stuff in WordPad, and then I save It as an .html, but how do I load It? When I just go to my computer and open It up, the words are all mixed with other little words signifying things like //par/ and stuff like that showing that I had a paragraph there, and It Is still in WordPad. Am I doing something wrong? Can anyone be kind enough to give me the basics of programming? …

The Robocop trilogy is considered science fiction, even by today's technological standards, but hot because of the hardware. You could have a webcam for his eyes, a speaker for his mouth, a pair of microphones for the ears, and some touch-sensitive pads all over the body, leaving only the sense of smell as a potential problem, but can easily be circumvented by having chemical detectors (for example, instead of saying "I smell crack" Robocop can detect trace elements of cocaine on the scene, effectively elminating the need for drug dogs). However, it is not the hardware, but the software that makes Robocop merely science fiction; however who said he had to go off arti…
