How do I go about finding out how much bandwith my connection has? I always have sites (usually streaming media sites) that ask how fast my connection is (in kbits). I have no clue and would like to find out. preferably if there is a site that does this (accurately), that'd be great! side note - didn't know where exactly this fits in so I put it in comp sci

hey all well just to start I use visual c++ with programming I was just fooling around with a program (I also just recently learned all about derivatives in calculus). I decided to make myself a lil' derivative calculating program, but I only know how to program c++ where your using the stupid dos-like box (forget what its called). Anyways, so I got it to work, but its really not very good, you have to input each part of the beginning function individually (say 2x^3 you'd have to specify the 2 and the 3). Also the terms had to be inputed individually, and displaying the derivative afterwards was hell lol. So just so non-calculus knowing ppl can help to…

I found an article that says Firefox's security is not much better than Internet Explorer's. Read this article: http://www.newsfactor.com/story.xhtml?story_id=38275 There are 28 known security flaws in Firefox, and 32 known security flaws in Internet Explorer. I don't think that is much of a difference.

Will the Semantic Web ever be successful? For those who don't know, the Semantic Web, pioneered by Tim Berners-Lee himself, is an attempt to move the web from a loosely structured collection of documents to a type of machine-understandable knowledge structures called ontologies. To put it simply, the Semantic Web tries to add meaning to the link structure of the web. It's like what the Xanadu project was trying to do way back in 1960, although they were waaay ahead of their time, and some worry the Semantic Web might be too. So far, no one has managed to make a "killer app" for the Semantic Web's underlying technologies, but this may be in the pipe in the form of Sema…

  9. Artificial consciousness/intelligence Artificial Intelligence is a field of science that is focused on creating machines that humans consider intelligent. But just what is intelligence? The present day computer is able to exchange data, learn of other computers, do extremely fast calculations and other functions which we might be consider intelligent. However, this is not sufficient. For a computer to be truly intelligent, in the human sense of the word, it will need to be self aware, conscious. I will argue that conscious is not a “thing” but a process of the brain, and that extreme complexity leads to consciousness. I will attempt to show that animals have a degr…

I've noticed that you can make a folder appear to be a file with an extension. For example, you can create a folder called folder.txt and it will still be a folder. Now, couldn't this be a security problem if you do this on a web site? My web host does not allow me to put an extension on a folder name. However, wouldn't some web hosts allow you to create something like http://www.(sitename).com/picture.gif and most people will think it is a picture file, while Internet Explorer recognizes it is a folder? Therefore, it will begin looking for index.html in the folder, which could contain a picture and hidden code? I'm worried about people signing up for banner a…

Hi guys. Last night I suffered from a viral attack. I think the source was from AIM, from a friends computer. So anyway, the start menu and the whole bottom toolbar is out. I can't click on anything downthere (though desktop icons are fine) I can use the start menu by pressing the windows key, and I can restore minimized documents with task manager. So, its more of an annoyance then anything else, because nothing else is wrong. The real problem is that the virus isn't showing up when I run Noron anti-virus (latest software, and I'm pretty sure the definitions are up to date.) Can anybody help overcome this latest illness?

I have no clue on how to do this, besides the use of a brute force algo. Given a single aircraft to start with, an airline company decides to start a contract based rent-a-plane business... Given the starting and ending time of the contract offered by the would be passengers, and the cost they are willing to bear, develop an algorithm to decide which contracts to take, keeping in mind, that the highest amount of profit is to be developed. The contracts can be contiguous in their periods. The number of contracts which can be given as input can be upto 100000 in number. So time is a constraint with the algorithm. Please share your ideas.

Ok, my lab is thinking about getting some external USB2.0/firewire harddrives to store data on, because we're using a ****load of memory up with all the video clips we use for motion analysis. Is there anything in particular we need to know about these things before we buy one? Subtle flaws, tricks to working with them? Are there particular brands that are very good or very bad? Any input would be appreciated. Mokele

When somebody visits a web site, the web site usually logs the visitor's IP address. This can be used to see how many times the same person visits a web site. How does this work? Can I create a script that will load a web site in a frame, and then randomly generate the IP address that the web site will log from my computer? Please let me know. Thank you.

I found a very interesting free program on the Internet! Go to http://www.aimstuff.net and click on "Mods" on the left menu. Then click on, "Into to Modding". There you can download the program. It is called "Resource Hacker". This program can open any .exe or .dll file. When you first open a file with this program, you will see a bunch of folders. Each of these folders will probably have some sub-folders. These sub-folders have different types of files in them. Some of the files are the images that the program uses. Other files contain text. I opened Explorer.exe and one of the text files said this: What is this text? Could this be part of the act…

I want to learn how to code right down to the nitty gritty, I mean what language would I use where I am handling binary values and memory addresses and such, I thought C would but that is a much higher level language than I was hoping. I think it is called maching code or assembly or something but I think you know what I mean. Also, it isnt too mind boggling is it? It's just that this interests me alot and I wish to understand how the computer works at a deeper level. Thanks, -BigMoosie

  19. Here's a little coding fun...duplicate the output from a windows program for Linux... ---background My Internet randomly gets really slow and stays that way, usually until I reset the modem. For instance, 5 minuets ago before I started writing this, it was 262 K. I just noticed that it sped up because scienceforums loaded normal, at 3042 Kb... I've called customer support, a couple times, but most of the people keep saying "we don't support Linux" and just stop at that. Two people went through and tested my downstreamSNR, transmit power, and were pretty useful. One had me do a complete modem reset, informed me that a lot of customers fix this by getting the l…

http://noosphere.princeton.edu/ These people seem like they're onto something big... and I've always thought it was a sort of missing link between quantum gravity/string theory and memetics. Somehow human thought and behavior is altering entropy data being collected by random event generators, in a way that can be correlated worldwide. Ed: And wow, guess I've posted about this before... repeatedly, but urgh, oh well

  21. It's all in the title: What, in your opinion, is the most destructive virus in history? This does not mean which virus actually caused the most troubles globally, but which virus had the greatest destroying abilities. I vote for CIH, as it can annihilate the users' BIOS, forcing them to buy new HARDWARE!!

Hello, I saw an episode of CSI: Miami. And this guy with a laptop was able to steal signals from across the building so he can go into the Net. So his company won't be able to catch him surfing the Net during work. Is this even possible!? People with laptop and wireless connection can easily steal signals by just being in range of the whatever-you-call-it!? There is no protection of any kind to prevent others from stealing it?
