The UK government is backing a plan to capture a good part of 12 million tpa CO2 produced by power generators and other industrial produces along the Yorkshire half of the M62 corridor. Disposal will be via the existing coastal gas pipeline infrastructure at Easington out to a subsea saline aquifer. BBC Link PS Primary target is one of my old workplaces

Here I share this analysis from data obtained at: https://data.unccd.int/countries-affected-by-drought?epoch=e5 As you can see (with coefficient of determination of ~ 96%), regression says that we will face a moderate-severe droughts over nearly 100% Planet Earth lands by 2048.

It actually makes sense that even though there is a decline of the antarctic ice shelves, The center of the continent is still accumulating ice and snow at a steady pace. That would be ideal for insulation and would be much easier to remove than rock and soil. The the question is how is it that on an annual basis It is accumulating 200 billion tons of snow and ice. But the outer shelves are melting, due to climate change and the planet hitting record highs some years.🤔

Greetings. First was called 'global warming', now a more generic 'climate change', like it is not only about getting hotter. For the recent decades, what are the changes/variations/tendencies in average atmospheric pressure, ultraviolet index, ozone presence, geothermal activity, windy conditions, humidity readings... not only temperature ? I only encounter graphs for how many average degrees versus decades. Nothing else varies or kept track ?

The Egyptian Authorities have ordered the emergency closure of all the tourist beaches in Alexandria, and issued a warning to shipping on their Mediterranean coast from Marsa Matruh in the west, to El-Alamein and Baltim in the east - a distance of some 419 Kilometres - following urgent warnings from the Egyptian Meteorological Authority. https://www.egyptindependent.com/alexandria-closes-all-beaches-on-tuesday-over-rough-waves The closure of all the beaches in Alexandria which is a popular seaside holiday destination for residents of Cairo comes at the peak-end of the summer holiday season, and represents a major disruption to the tourist industry. It is also quite unus…

The BBC has announced that it will revert to using the UK government Met Office as the data source of all its weather forecasting and climate update services. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/crm4z8mple3o The BBC had previously terminated a near century old relationship with the Met Office eight years ago in 2017 in favour of a Dutch provider called the MeteoGroup citing a need to obtain “best value for license payers money”. The MeteoGroup was subsequently taken over by a private American firm called DTN based in Minnesota. In October 2024 a technical fault affecting the supplying of data to the United Kingdom's BBC Weather service caused the latter's website and app …

I need a good short debate that is very convincing to climate skeptics. I have come to believe that humans are making the Earth worst, by making it hotter. There are some who argue that warmer is better. The high CO2 is good for plants. How do you counter that argument? There are studies that show sea levels are not rising among Pacific Islanders. The islands seem to float above the sea level rise by accretion. Coral reef islands can accrete vertically in response to sea level rise | Science Advances Another climate skeptic claim is that when you compare the graphs of historic, and prehistoric, CO2 levels in the atmosphere, to the graph of average temp…

I read in the book "Fully Automated Luxury Communism" if the average temperature of the earth rises above 6 °C all beeings with lungs die, because the methane brakes out.

No matter what is happening on the earths surface,we cannot change the natural phenomenon happening in the earths core within. The ultimate challenge we face is an impending overheating within, and unbearable climate conditions.None of our efforts can deter the many years our mother Earth has experienced and time is racing .The over the normal temperatures, melting ice glacier's,and floods ,are not man made they are our deteriorating ecological, logical occurrence since evolution. We must concentrate on new methods of survival for these coming climate changes .Forget the space exploration, the new fashion of the money powers we wastefully explore.Lets try to scientifically fin…

Most climate change forecasts predict sea level rise in the range of 3 feet by the end of the century if greenhouse gas emissions are not stopped, but if we think we are in the Ice age, and sea level rise during an ice age cycle tends to be more like 50 - 100 m for the same range of global temperature increase, it should be the same for abut 5 degrees Celsius of global temperature increase. The warming is a lot faster so its difficult to compare, but so far the global temperature increase has only been about 1.6 degrees resulting in only a feet or so of sea level rise, but it seems it getting dangerously high. What do you think? This is the temperature …

https://www.rte.ie/news/2024/0308/1436684-trees-climate/ "The Tiny Forest concept was pioneered by a Japanese botanist, Akira Miyawaki. He pioneered a special method of planting and ground preparation that can be used to grow forests ten times faster than a typical forest (which usually takes 200 to 300 years" "Usually up to five saplings are planted for every square metre and as a result, the trees are forced to grow upwards for sunlight instead of spreading outwards"

All the vaccine does is make you die, you should refuse thus. The solution is to remove pollution from us. Global warming causes trillions of dollars of physical damages, and traffic noise worsens spread of COVID (which causes trillions of dollars of healthcare costs,) how long for our leaders to realize the solutions for air traffic is: outlaw, and for land vehicles: subsidizes to switch to fuelless? Proof that traffic worsens spread of COVID, from our scientist leaders: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8499730/ Proof that COVID causes trillions of dollars of damages: https://healthpolicy.usc.edu/article/covid-19s-total-cost-to-the-economy…

On another forum a climate change denier posted this graph: At first glance it looks like no more than the expected exponential reduction in intensity with concentration of the absorber predicted by the Beer-Lambert law. Has anyone come across this being used as a counterargument to climate change science, is the implication true that further increases should have a proportionately lesser effect and what relevance does that have to the models used to predict climate change?

Interesting. Usually hydrogen isn’t found by itself as a gas, so one needs to use energy to separate it. In such cases it’s a storage medium, not an energy source, and it’s only as “green” as the source of electricity But hydrogen gas deposits (aka white or gold hydrogen) have been found https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/29/climate/white-hydrogen-fossil-fuels-climate/index.html “[the probe] indicated the presence of a large reservoir of hydrogen beneath. They ran calculations and estimated the deposit could contain between 6 million and 250 million metric tons of hydrogen”

I've mentioned this idea before, as a way of producing fish, but it could also fix huge quantities of carbon onto the ocean floor if done at scale. You have a specially designed ship stationed at a very non-productive part of the ocean. ( most of the world oceans are ocean desert ) The ship controls a robotic electrical pump, on the ocean floor. The pump stirrs up sediment, and pumps it to the surface through a thin (but large diameter) polythene tube. When the sediment meets the surface, you get a bloom of algae, which naturally happens whenerver water from the depths upwells. The algae are then the bottom of a food chain, that supports vast clouds of pla…

Does anyone have the details on how the earth's yearly average temp is derived? I assume there are thermometers all over the place, but how many are there, how are they coordinated, how frequently are temps taken, etc.

Hi. In the news, a supposedly expert opinion on that Hawaii fire said the hotter weather promotes more evaporation yielding more ready-to-burn fuel. (Makes some sense) , Is that a too simplistic point of view ? More evaporation can mean more precipitation somewhere else, does it ? Is all of this climate changing too guessy ? -The cause of the fire if was electrical sparks or not was left out of the discussion- Are coincidental events as hurricane wind, drought, season, temperature... more influencing factors than anything else in the disaster ?

Hello I have a theoretical question. I’m writing a paper and I’m dealing with a hypothetical scenario. Let’s say that the global oxygen level in the air dipped to 10% worldwide. I would assume that this would be enough to impair normal biological function for most humans. Now in this given scenario, I would like to know a few things. Firstly even though regular fires would be unable to start, would smouldering fires continue to burn? And would the glowing light from the smouldering embers be visible to people? Secondly I would like to know if a person living in this environment would be able to briefly start a fire by blowing on the embers or a material that could be igni…

Why not? There are lots of other factors involved. There was substantial warming from 1880s to 1950, without significant rise in CO2, so that was not likely to be greenhouse gas-caused. Then there's the Solar output, the orbit, the effect of soot on ice at the poles, especially the north, and there's clouds, their reflectiveness and insulation properties, and volcanoes. (to name a few)

This was posted to the Fediverse , just sharing here so we can discuss here too. ‘We are moving in the wrong direction’: New UN report highlights the scale of global climate change https://www.euronews.com/green/2023/04/21/record-heat-sea-level-rise-and-melting-ice-new-report-highlights-climate-changes-global-ad One question is, how many more reports are needed before we as a human race take things more seriously. There is only so much as individuals we can do surely. Paul

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/nov/01/cop26-what-is-deforestation-and-is-stopping-it-really-possible-aoe The loss of forests and their capacity as carbon sinks, as well as their effects (especially rainforest) on weather patterns, poses serious problems for us. Where do you think effort would be best concentrated? Paying developing nations not to chop, giving them carbon capture credits, seems like one practical approach.

I looked into the subject of Putin vs the Rest of the world and it seems to be a stalemate. Which is scary because it means putin could hold out against a US offensive. Putin shows no signs of slowing down. So the US must counter his Ukraine offensive with force, or with guile. A horrible thought occured to me: what if the US tunnels into Russian homes and randomly take down the citizens of Russia that way, as a horrible but telling repartee to what Putin done wrong? An eye for an eye, as the Muslim world would say. One way or another this Ukraine crisis is very bad stuff. Either WW3 ensures of the US tunnel into Russian civilian homes or I dunno what. …
