Why do people crave popularity?

Why do some people crave popularity would be correct; I don't so your statement would be falsified.

Confirmation that they are socially acceptable and attractive. Evolutionarily, it ties to mating potential; more popular, more mates.

I agree to your point of mating potential but social acceptibility? Why? You can be socially acceptible even when you are not popular! And if it is related to 'mating' then every individual would want to be popular not 'some' as you mentioned. :)

because they want to interact scoially, with many people and be considered attractive by the majority, in order to have a choice in who to talk to.

Not everyone wants children, are not sexually motivated, have other means of gratification not involving people etc.

Popularity implies being accepted and valued within certain groups. The advantage of this can be partially internal (confirmation of status, for example) but also has practical aspects (improved social interactions and collaborations).
