my favorite scientist of all time is Nicola Tesla

I have quite a few, but Earnest Rutherford is certainly in my Top 5.

I don't think I have to answer that question.

 

EDIT: Rutherford was a prat.

Maxwell or Young, both exceptionally and under estimated by many;

I like Kim Peek, he's not a scientist though.

Exactly. It's harder than picking a favorite ice cream flavor (or, flavour for those of you who speak the Queen's English ). At least with ice cream flavors, there are reasonable limits to the choices. I mean, how freakin' many awesome scientists have there been?

Maxwell for unification of electric and magnetic theory. In doing so he created the first theory with Lorentz and gauge symmetry and electromagnetic duality, of course this was not realised at the time.

 

Yang and Mills for generalising the above.

 

Einstein and Hilbert for general relativity.
