I think that's actually true, according to The Fabric of the Cosmos (but only on quantum scales). Scientists are trying to find proof of extra dimensions by studying the effects of gravity over ridiculously tiny distances. I remember reading something about gravity being dispersed across possible upper dimensions or even multiple universes, and if we could figure a way to "thump it", we might be able to use gravity as a way to communicate.
