super-duper toothbrush technology

Recommended Posts

I am about to spend a large amount of money to buy a state of the art toothbrush.  I have read the blurb and I am impressed.  I think this is because I don't understand a word of it.  THIS ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH USES AN ULTRA VIOLET (UV) LED LIGHT THAT REACTS WITH A TITANIUM DIOXIDE BAR IN THE BRUSH HANDLE, TO CREATE IONS THAT SUPPRESS THE BACTERIA THAT CAUSE PLAQUE. THE NEGATIVE ELECTRONS ARE SENT TO YOUR MOUTH VIA WATER OR SALIVA. ALTHOUGH THE TOOTHBRUSH USES ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY, IT HARNESSES NATURE USING “WATER AND LIGHT”.  Is this description credible?  I have removed the manufacturers name. Thanks

In cosmetics, powdered titanium dioxide is used to block UV rays, so how is it "reacting" to UV?

It's being investigated as a carcinogen: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/toothpaste-additive-e171-titanium-dioxide-food-products-cancer-cause-scientists-a7541956.html

Sunscreens are drugs in US, and TiO2 in the products may "block" UV light and is also photoactivated to produce free radicals.

France banned E171 (commercial TiO2 used in many products) in 2020 (https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/E-9-2019-003009_EN.html) observing there was not enough data to confirm its safety in context.  Subsequent research has challenged the study that provoked the ban https://scitechdaily.com/france-banned-this-common-food-additive-the-fda-says-is-safe-who-is-right/  and https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0278691519305836?via%3Dihub

FDA and (I think) EU to this point have not changed GRAS status.

Zaffy - save you money.  The brush at best is a gimmick.  Gimmicks do sell - but not usualy not in volume.
