  1. So it's been awhile since I visited newsgroups and I thought I would check them out, but outlook is asking me for a newsgroup server. Does anyone know of a good free newsgroup server?
  2. Noble gases have a very stable configuration where their outside electron shell is filled, specifically forming an octet. Most elements on the periodic table don't completely fill their outside shell, but they seek the stability of the noble gas configuration. So they bond with other atoms to fill their shell and make an octet. This bond between atoms enables two atoms to share electrons and fill their outside shells. They thus acquire the octet (which is simply 8 electrons in their outside orbital) they seek. Carbon has 4 electrons and seeks to have 8 like a noble gas. This means that it is able to bind to 4 different atoms and share 4 different electrons in order to obtain the octet arrangement. This is important to life because since carbon is able to bind to so many different atoms that many different kinds of complex molecules can form based on carbon. If you look at the periodic chart you will see that silicon is below carbon. This means that it has the same number of electrons in its outside shell and it is able to bind 4 atoms at once as well.
  3. I'm not sure I understand the question. Could you be more specific?
  4. Phil, I think part of our disagreement might have to do with definition. When I say education, I am thinking of all forms of mental stimulation from birth to death.
  5. As I remember there were cars in the movie that matched this description that traveled along specific magnetic roads. This is possible. The question is whether it would be safe, practical, and economical.
  6. Also, the antibiotic is not the only thing fighting the bacterial infection. Your immune system is fighting it as well. If you beat the bacteria infection to almost oblivion by taking your full course of antibiotics then you immune system can finish it off. If you don't take the full course then a larger population of bacteria will be left that is enriched in antibiotic resistance. This larger population will have a better chance of repopulating before the immune system can finish it off.
  7. Chimpanzees and other apes posses some capacity for language. Chimpanzees and gorillas have learned sign language with a vocabulary of a few hundred words. They are even able to construct simple sentences and understand them. Chimpanzees can hoot and holler and make a variety of sounds, but they lack the physical ability to verbally reproduce the complex languages of man. If you assume that the shared ancestor of man and chimpanzee also possessed rudimentary abilities to vocalize and understand language then it is likely that our language abilities evolved from this capacity. Chimpanzees live in an environment with a cornucopia of fruits and other plant matter to feast on. It has been suggested that the ancestors of the hominids were separated from its chimpanzee-like relative millions of years ago from some sort of physical barrier. The environment of the chimpanzee's ancestor remained lush with plenty to eat (like the Congo today) while the environment of the ancestors of man slowly dried out to a more savanna-like environment. Chimpanzees periodically go on tribal hunts where they work together to catch monkeys or other prey for meat. The chimpanzees coordinate their hunts by vocalizing and making a variety of calls. You also notice by observing chimpanzees hunt that the members of the group that contribute more to the hunt get better spoils. The ancestor of man probably had to rely more and more on his hunting ability because his environment was becoming drier and there was less to eat from the trees. His ability to vocalize and communicate had become a priority for his evolution and it grew in leaps and bounds. Written language developed much later than verbal language.
  8. Why would we believe that the AIDS epidemic was caused by a conspiracy when we know that the SIV/HIV viruses can easily be transmitted between primate species without any human intervention? We also know through mutagenic studies that the virus was first introduced into the human population in the 1930's. People weren’t even aware that chimpanzees had a virus called SIV until at least the 1980's. Why would they even suspect that chimpanzees or monkeys harbored this virus when apes and African monkeys don't even become sick? So you are suggesting that scientists of the 1930's somehow knew to look for a virus in chimpanzees that didn't cause any symptoms? They also needed to know that this virus would cause AIDS in humans when it didn't cause any harm to the apes. The brilliance of these men doesn't stop there. They must have had the foresight to know that even though they infected people in Africa that it would somehow end up in the gay community in the USA. They must have foreseen the existence of the gay bath houses and the Canadian gay male Airline steward that would infect the homosexual community. Furthermore, they lacked almost all of the genetic and biochemical technology that we use today to isolate nucleic acids and proteins. Do you realize how much work went into isolating the HIV virus and identifying its RNA and proteins using the technology available in the 1980s and 90's? It would have been almost impossible for the scientists of the 1930s to do this. The geniuses that were able to pull this off deserve to be in control because they are obviously far more intelligent then we are.
  9. Depends on the environment. It can survive days in body fluids outside the body. If it is dried it usually dies sooner than that. I read somewhere that the virus survived 11 days in untreated sewage. These are laboratory results though, where large quantities of the virus were used. In in-vivo conditions the quantities of the virus would be smaller and the chances of finding a live virus in the sample would be reduced. Normally, the virus only last a few hours until the fluids are dry.
  10. I think you should try Mokele's suggestion. I don't think your phobia is beyond it's scope. If you want to relieve yourself of this specific phobia then desensitization might be your best bet. You don't have to do battle with a real tornado to confront this fear. The majority of those storms that you are petrified of do not result in tornadoes. I think maybe your afraid to try it because of your phobia.
  11. beatyundone, I don’t think your case is a typical run of the mill phobia and I don't believe that standard phobia treatment would be effective in your case. I think your problem has less to do with a specific fear of tornadoes than it has to do with your general anxiety. I think you are experiencing a hyperactive state of alertness. Your mind is telling you that something is wrong and that bad things are likely to happen. These phobias are common among people who suffer from GAD, panic attacks, and OCD. A lot of people with these disorders have some unfounded fear of immediate danger and death. Many people fear that they are going to have a heart attack or some other kind of physiological problem, but a fear of death from some element of the environment is not uncommon. If you were to measure people in a range from extreme alertness to danger to complete calm you would be too far towards the side of alertness to danger. To cure your phobia you must treat the underlying problem. If your current psychiatrist is not helping you then you should seek out another one. This may sound silly, but exercise, a healthy diet, and some form of meditation have proven to be helpful in reducing anxiety though I don't think that will completely relieve you of this problem. SSI's like Prozac have also proven helpful but I hate to suggest that to someone who is only 15. I am sure you will beat this and you will be enjoying life to the fullest soon.
  12. "Whitey's" plan has backfired. The western countries have already spent billions on AIDS research and medical care. Anyone with enough knowledge of genetics to unleash this epidemic would surely realize that the disease was not going to stay within the homosexual community and that heterosexuals would be infected as well. In fact the largest group of patients infected with the virus now in Africa is heterosexual females.
  13. Considering that there is still a lot to be learned about genetics, I don't think an exact number can accurately calculated. The numbers required would be reduced if the members of the potential population were screened against disease causing alleles and for a healthy variation of traits.
  14. The only way that I know of to increase your predetermined height is to take HGH while still growing. I definitely wouldn't recommend that to anyone who already has a normal amount though, because you could end up with a lot more problems than just being shorter than you would like.
  15. I'm all for regulation of the creation and use of gm crops and I believe that there has been a serious lack of regulation so far, but gm crops have already shown enormous potential benefits. I disagree with fanatical anti-gm groups who would readily toss out any potential benefits from these crops in favor of keeping everything "natural." People in the agricultural business cannot be expected to regulate themselves when there is so much money to be made. Anti-gm groups cannot be allowed pressure governments into regulating gm crops into oblivion through scare tactics. A balance must be made and level-headed regulation needs to be created and enforced.
  16. My goal: My goal is to set up a system where a plant can control the movements of an airplane. The plant will interact with a flight simulator and keep a plane flying north. Wind will constantly be applied to the airplane and it’s the plants job to adjust to changes caused by the wind and keep its flight plan. To accomplish this I will use an electrochemical interface between the plant and the flight simulator. North will represent 0 degrees. The plane flying north produces an electrical potential of 50V. A deviation from 0 degrees clockwise in the amount of 1 degree will result in a change of .1V. A deviation from 0 degrees counterclockwise in the amount of 1 degree will represent a change of -.1V. A dell laptop will run a simplified plane simulation written in Java or C+. The simulator program will control a USB device that will vary in an electrical signal based on the plane's flight. The USB device will be attached to an electrical device that will amplify the signal coming from the USB device, which is controlled by the flight simulator. The electrical signal from the flight simulator will be attached to a Calcium gate that will allow more calcium to be released when the Voltage rises but will reduce the amount of Calcium released when the Voltage is reduced. The calcium gate will be attached to a burette that will supply a constant drip of water with a variable amount of Calcium. The burette will drip into an aquarium with growing water lilies. The water lilies will respond to the amount of calcium in the water by producing a protein called Auxin. Auxin is a plant hormone that creates pH change in the cell wall near the plant membrane of between 4.5 and 7.0. Through genetic recombination the gene that codes for the protein Auxin will be amplified so that the plant DNA contains many copies. Furthermore, each of the Auxin genes will also contain animal muscle cell enhancers that will respond to the amount of calcium by increasing transcription with increasing Ca. As the amount of Ca increases the amount of Auxin in the plant cells of the water lilies will increase and the PH of the plant cells will go up. Micro probes will be inserted into the plant cell walls that will measure the Ph changes. The ph changes will be measured with the appropriate device and then attached to the computer running the simulator. Since an increase in pH means that the plan is off course clockwise the increase will cause the plane to turn back counterclockwise and fix its position.
  17. I believe that hair color, like skin color and height, is a polygene. One allele is recessive and colorless and the other allele is dominant and codes for a dark pigment. You have multiple versions of the gene and the more dominant versions of the gene that you have the darker your hair. Then answer to your question is yes. If you had for example these genotypes for your parents: HH Hh HH Hh X Hh hh hh hh. You could end up with blond hair if your genotype was Hh Hh hh hh. I think. The real question is what color was the mailman's hair?
  18. Maybe it's a broken spoon and a wood stick fit into the grove for a handle.
  19. From picture 2 it looks like a cutting tool. The rounded end is held in the palm of the hand and the sharpened strait end is used for cutting like the edge of a blade. Perhaps it could have been used to cut the fat and tendons off of meat and bones or maybe whittling wood. It looks like it is a stone tool to me. Random guess of course. Looking a picture three, it sort of looks like bone. Is it heavy like stone or lighter like bone? Take it to the anthropology department at a university and they could probably tell you in 5 seconds.
