  1. Disclaimer: I didn't read the entire thread. I just want to briefly respond to the opening question: Yes. Of course it does. We all come here as volunteers seeking both information but also entertainment (information can of course be entertainment in itself). So, yes, please make jokes, as I like to be entertained. That said, unfortunately, this is just another internet forum. That means that some people have an incredibly short fuse. They seem to think that in case of doubt, better make sure and sling some insults back at whoever wrote something to them. (To anyone who thinks this is new: Welcome to the internet). While I place the blame of any derailed thread squarely with those people who deliberately escalate the thread, I would like to ask for a small favor to everyone else too: can you please doublecheck your posts to see if they can be understood as an insult? Sometimes it is better to spoil the joke, by writing (in a small font) that your remark was just a joke.
  2. Is this homework? It seems copy-pasted from somewhere else.
  3. The Football World Cup in Brasil is about to start. Are you gonna watch it, or can't you wait for it to be over so we can all resume normal life again? Are you gonna dress up in your own (or someone else's) national colours to support the team? Watch at home or in the pub? And who's gonna win it? I will definitely see the Dutch play, and I will go to the pub to see it. I have some old orange shirt which I will wear. I do go see the match in the pub only when the Dutch play at a major tournament (European or World Cup). I don't think the Dutch will get very far, since we meet the reigning World champions in the 1st match. The most sensible guess is that Brasil will win it (a good team playing at home), but I hope some underdog can snatch the title. Bosnia would be an awesome champion.
  4. md2 was suspended for 3 days for failing to engage in a two-way discussion and for writing incomprehensible or incomplete posts. Failure to engage in a two-way conversation will trigger a one-way response from the moderators, as happened right here.
  5. ! Moderator Note md2, You were asked to write posts that we can understand. Your complete failure to engage in any two-way conversation here is becoming an issue. If you wish to stay on our forum much longer, we demand that you start writing posts we understand, and that you sometimes respond to what people write to you (even when their posts have just been requests for clarification thus far).
  6. Just a few comments: Firstly, your English is near-Perfect, so don't worry about that. Secondly, light is not emitted by the nucleus, but instead it is thought that it is absorbed when a photon kicks an electron into a higher orbit (or in the case of ionizing radiation, removed altogether), and light is emitted when that electron falls back to a lower orbit. That is why particular materials emit light at particular wavelengths. But I guess that for the sake of your argument, we just assume you can see the nucleus. I am not sure why the 2nd atom would move as a result of the 1st atom receiving a push according to your idea? Generally it is thought that a number of forces are acting between atoms, and that depending on the distance between the atoms, different forces are dominant (and they can attract as well as repel). Also, welcome to the forum.
  7. ! Moderator Note After review, moderators decided that for once we will allow some advertising. We support this initiative, despite the violation of our rules, section 2.7. That does not mean that advertising is now allowed on our forum. Check our rules in case of doubt. In the meantime, we encourage member ysbiology to initiate a discussion here, perhaps about the reasons for starting this new journal.
  8. I do not think that the foam should be compressed (in the sense of gas compression) to increase the density if you want to recycle. When you compress it, and you compress it for a short period, it will actually just decompress just as you release the pressure, meaning that the volume will increase again. You should somehow get the density to increase permanently. Unfortunately, the PS decomposes before it melts, otherwise you could just melt it down. I think I'd like to find out first what it decomposes into (perhaps that can be recycled too). Maybe you can dissolve the foam (I believe it dissolves into acetone). The trick would be to use as little solvent as possible (and preferably a non-toxic one). It's not ideal either, because obviously you would have to separate the solvent out again, and you would have recycling trucks going up and down with solvent (a high risk liquid, which makes it expensive). I think there is a reason why even in Germany, where recycling is mandatory, the PS recycling isn't taking off. Also, I believe that you got your values from wikipedia? The values of 30 kg/m3 to 330 kg/m3 are bulk density - not actual material density. (Bulk means if you take 330 kg of polystyrene scrap, and you pour all those pieces into a container, it should fit in 1 m3, including all the pockets of air in between those pieces). Therefore, the actual material density should be even more.
  9. As a first approximation, I would just calculate as if you are compressing gas. (After all, a foam is mostly small gas bubbles). No equations in this link, but it is a fun read anyway (and not too long).
  10. You first need to define the starting pressure of your PS (polystyrene foam, I assume). The final answer depends on that. By default, it would be "atmospheric pressure", or 1.01325 bar, but it would be best if you confirm this. And maybe you can solve the question now that you know what piece of important information was missing so far? Mod comment: also, I moved your post, at your request.
  11. Yeah, I thought that our OP wanted to gently float down using a balloon (like a helium balloon). Now I understand that he just wants to fall down to earth at terminal velocity, and then use an airbag to soften the inevitable crash. Mythbusters tested using a life raft for surviving a fall (which worked, as the raft was huge). And if you google around for 'paratrooper airbag', there are a number of hits. It seems to me however that the entire world still prefers parachutes, not airbags. Personally, if an airline starts handing out parachutes or airbags before boarding the plane, I think I'd just have another beer in the airport lounge, and let the plane depart without me.

! Moderator Note md2, You must write posts that we can understand. What do you want to ask or discuss? If you do not write posts that other people can understand, you cannot post on our forum. I hope you understand this warning. So far, nobody understood any of your posts.
  13. What makes you think that a balloon will be lighter? I assume you want to fill it with pressurized gas? Such gas cylinders are really heavy. If you want to slow down the fall of anyone from an airplane, I would recommend a parachute. However, most airplanes seem to crash at take off or landing, which gives the passengers no time to leave the aircraft, as everything happens very fast. And if something goes so very wrong with an airplane that you want to leave it mid-flight at cruise altitude, I agree with Sato that fire and shrapnel are an issue. Also, the sub-zero temperatures, the raging 800 km/h wind and the very thin air are a real concern.
  14. In a purely scientific debate, I can do without any subjective remark, because I don't care about opinions in such a debate. Also, while describing an idea with strong words may be acceptable according to the letter of the law (or rather, our rules), it can still be understood to be an insult. Whether something is an insult is decided by the receiver, not the sender. So, I conclude that any subjective comment about someone's idea is just not functional, because it is irrelevant for the contents of the discussion, and may sometimes (unintentionally?) even derail a discussion because it is received as insulting. Finally, often when people make a remark that the "idea" was stupid, they are just looking for the limit of what is tolerated here. They don't break the letter of the law, but they certainly don't understand (or choose to ignore) the spirit of it. So, ask yourself, while it may not be illegal to be insulting, do I want to run the risk of being understood as such? Unless your intent is to insult, a positive remark will have better results than a negative one. And if you have to ask yourself if something is allowed here or not, I am certain that you can make it sound more positive, and at the same time remove any doubt of breaking the rules. And that is why I actually do keep to my 3-step plan, generally removing negative sounds from my posts, regardless of whether it is allowed or not. Please note that I was able to convey my message without saying that "putting all that negative subjectiveness in a post is just stupid, moronic and retarded". (Also note that I mean the action of doing that, not the author of the comment, this wasn't a personal attack).
  15. Discussing on the internet in 3 easy steps: 1. Write your message, but do not press "post". 2. Whatever you just wrote, tone it down. 3. When in doubt, tone it down even more.
  16. Why not? We are dumping enough materials / minerals into the ocean. If we extract them out again, that would be pretty green, imho. I agree with others though that I don't think it is economical on a short-term, because our technologty is not ready for it.
  17. ! Moderator Note This thread violates rule 2.7 of our forum, and since no other content other than advertising was posted, it is under review to be removed altogether. Thread closed, url removed.
  18. If you have the means to make ice (either by flying to the Arctic, or by using a refrigerator) you really do not need a solar still. You can just use the electric heating to distill the salt water, or use your airplane/helicopter to fly to the supermarket. Also, as John suggested, a lot of ice in the arctic (and certainly in glaciers) is sweet water, so you just have to melt it to get drinking water. A solar still works through using 2 different temperatures, as correctly described by the OP. The hot side is heated by the sun's rays, and the cold side (where condensation occurs) is generally cooled by the ambient air, not by a complicated cooling machine. That way, you can make fresh water without the need for any outside input (i.e. electricity, ice, or other forms of active cooling).
  19. If you share your ideas on this forum, they become public and other people can use it (and that would not be considered stealing). If you want to become rich with your ideas, you should keep them secret from everyone. Patent offices are really strict: if they can see any public mention of the idea, on internet or printed media, they can cancel the patent. However, be sure to actually develop the idea! The worst thing that can happen is that your brilliant idea never gets used because you don't take action, and nobody else knows about it.
  20. It depends what you want to grow. Some plants can handle irrigation on their leaves (artificial rain), and some may develop fungi as a result of rain. But the main reason people use drip irrigation is that it is more efficient: less water evaporates, and more gets absorbed by the plants. But I kinda agree with Acme: just start simple. You'll learn as you go.
  21. Apologies for a serious remark in the jokes thread, but I would just like to state that chefs are indeed chemists, and cooking is a form of (organic) chemistry. To compensate for being so serious, here's a lolcat: Have a good weekend!
  22. ! Moderator Note Strictly speaking this would violate our rules against advertising (rules, section 2.7), but we will tolerate this since it is educational and after a quick review by several moderators was deemed a good resource. But that this is not an invitation for everyone else to spam their educational youtube channels, and this exception does not give anyone else the right to claim that their post should be allowed as well.
  23. ! Moderator Note ADVANCE, I am not sure what you think to achieve with the "laughter", but it can easily be perceived as insulting. Sato most probably made a serious reply to your question, and you laugh at it. Please review your own writing before pressing the "post" button, and check if any of its contents can come across as insulting. I have to say that you require an awful lot of moderation. Please try to improve soon. Do not discuss the contents of this moderator note. If you have any issues with it, use the report button at the bottom of this post. Everyone else, please ignore any insulting remarks. Replying to them will be considered off-topic and going off-topic is against our rules.
  24. ! Moderator Note Since the large majority of the replies in this thread have nothing to do with the actual topic and are just childish fighting over who dunnit, and who started, this thread was reviewed by multiple moderators, and will be closed permanently. ADVANCE, 1. swansont asked you to report any issues, not discuss them here. If his post was not clear enough, let me spell it out for you: Do not discuss moderation in any thread, ever (it is off topic, and being off topic is against the rules, see: section 2.5). Any issues should be reported. The next time you discuss moderation in a thread again, you get another warning point, and you will risk suspension or even a ban. Any general remarks or suggestions can be placed in the Suggestions, Comments and Support forum. However, we will not tolerate the discussion of specific moderation there. 2. Ophiolite explained (twice by now) that the remark was not meant as an insult, yet you choose to continue to fight and bicker in a most disturbing way. It is worrying that you can explode like you did in this thread after a misunderstanding. 3. I totally agree with swansont that it just does not matter who started. You violated the rules, and therefore you got a warning, and the warning point obviously stays. As long as you worry only about your own behavior, and you just report any issue, we (mods) can worry about everything else. From what I have observed until now, you should focus on your own behavior first, as there is some room for improvement. 4. Do not mix the topics of two threads. Do not discuss this moderation anywhere on the forum. If you have an issue with it, you can report it (using the report button), and another moderator will have a look. Thread closed.
  25. ! Moderator Note ADVANCE, Do not insult members on our forum. I strongly suggest you improve your behavior, both in this thread and in other threads. Also, science is all about evidence based explanations of phenomena, not about trusting people.
