  1. for Me the answer to "What`s a Science" would simply be Any area of study that faithfully employs the Scientific methodology in order to gain further understanding.

Does that include private investigation? Or even torture?? (both employ scientific method to obtain knowledge - but are they sciences?)

  2. The word "SCIENCE" actually means "KNOWLEDGE" IIRC... Therefore encompasing everything. All knowledge is science.

wrt history, if you were to tell the story of the history of our model for the atom (starting with Thompsom's plumb pudding going through Bohr etc..), would you call it History or Science?

  3. What about a magnet stuck to the underside of a skateboard, place on top of a magnetic surface of the same charge so the magnets are repelled and the skateboard is suspended in the air? :D

Sound like a cool idea - although I think the board would flip. Although if someone was standing on it they could apply pressure with the feet to stop it happening I suppose. You'd need some sort of magnetised rink to skate your board on.

  4. Admittedly they do not explain what charge is and don't answer the origional question. They are correct in what they say though and do explain the confusion between positive and negative being the wrong way round.

  5.

Why is the anode (fewer electrons) at a higher potential than the cathode when the cathode contains more electrons? I would have thought that the electrode with the greater number of electrons would have been at the higher potential.

The first 2 posts by (the ones you dissed) explain this correctly.

  6. Hi. I don't actually know the answer to your question, but no one else has answered and I am a formulator so.. If you don't get a yes no answer from anyone else, could you try and knock up a few test mixes with different levels of substitution in them, say 20%, 40% 50%, 60% 80% 100% and then test them out to see if they still perfom desireably? In other words - experiment with it and see if it works?

    Regards.

  7. I've got the Nintendo DS - It's excellent! I've seen PSP and it looks really good. The DS is better for me because I like the strategy games and stuff, whereas I think the PSP would be better for shootem ups, sporty football games and racing etc.. just my opinion... they are both really good!

    regards.

  8. I knew a girl once who's next door neighbour had a little white cat. It had something wrong with it so that it never got bigger than when it was a kitten. They think it had some sort of mental dammage as well as it perminantly had it's tongue hanging out and sometimes it went diagonally instead of straight. Very cute!

  9. Whats wrong with chocolate milk? People get all funny with chocolate - what is wrong with it? Contains protean, carbs, fat... Just what you need after going to the gym or dance studio.

wrt veg. lots of people don't like certain foods when they are younger but aquire a taste for them when older. Either your tastes change, or, you just learn not to be so screamish and get on with eating for substance rather than pleasure. e.g. I used to hate mushrooms - now I love them! I used to hate peas - I still don't like them, but will eat them because they are food and are good for me.

  10. How can the maggots tell if the tissue is dead without eating it first?

And how could you trust them not to go crawling up an artery and getting lost...?

pretty certain they only eat the dead/infected stuff - must be the flavour.

I saw a documentry on this - if you leave them in the wound too long then they run out of dead stuff and infected meat to feed on and then they turn on each other - there have been cases of bandages being removed and people finding just one large maggot left over!.

I don't think maggot poo is an issue.

Hmm.. lovely topic - I'm just off to lunch.

  11. you guys have probably seen this before but my avitar is an example of a fully working PM machine! Just look -- the 9's are heavier than the 6's so the wheel will roll to the right continually!

  12. My own interest is to see where nanomanufacturing can impact our energy and environmental needs... like increasing the efficiency of photovoltaics, for example.

    That's excellent!

Nano TiO2 particles are used in sunblock to get high SPF values without staining the skin white. I made my own homemade version for my wife as she is allergic to most sunscreens. (OK, it was homemade in so much as I ordered some samples of nano TiO2 from some big componies).

(sorry about the BMW post - I couldn't resist it).

  13. Some call Dihydrogen Monoxide the "Invisible Killer"

Dihydrogen Monoxide is linked to gun violence

Dihydrogen monoxide was found at every recent school shooting

Athletes use DIHYDROGEN MONOXIDE, or DHMO, to enhance performance

Dihydrogen Monoxide has been found in our rivers, lakes, oceans and streams

Dihydrogen Monoxide is a major component of acid rain

Thousands die each year after inhaling dihydrogen monoxide

    Dihydrogen Monoxide can be deadly

Ok, with the exeption of gun violence, the rest is in fact quite true...

  14. I was particularly impressed by nanotubes which I found to be of great importance in the future. Like drug delivering for example. QUOTE]

Wow - and just think that people used to use series 3 white BMW's!

  15. Shall we assume that sunflour seeds or rasins are cheaper? or have I missed that one somewhere?

It takes about 3 mins by trial and error I think. You can only use 10 units anyway to make up your 1000g. Therefore tryout 10:0 / 9:1 / 8:2 / 7:3 / 6:4 / 50:50 / 4:6 etc... back to 0:10 units of each. (or have I missed the point here?)

PS - If raisins are cheaper, use 50:50(75g fibre + 30g iron). If sunflour seeds are cheaper then use 100% sunflour seeds (100g fibre + 40g iron).

  16. ...... and there was me, all pleased, thinking I'd made a good first impression, oh well..:D

QUOTE:YT2095 "I wanted it so that there could be No arguments made or fought because of some perceived injustice of points being awarded "when I`m a better than he / she is..."

it`s simply a way of saying Thank You and showing appreciation, nothing more.

I figured we have plenty of ways to show we Disapprove and lots of tools to Bash someone with, so it would be Nice to have something that does the Opposite, and be Excellent to each other with."

    .......... Hippy! :D

  17. So, just another quick question then with regard to the rep points, as I'm quite new. I only have about 11 posts to my name so far and only half of them have been science really. I have 10 reputation points already. Does this mean someone likes me or does everyone start with 10 points anyway? Cheers.

  18. When I was at school I used to want to grow up and solve the worlds energy problems by sorting out the problems with nuclear fussion..... ahhhh.. if only.

A few years ago (late 90's) I had breakfast in a B&B near Didcot and got talking to some random bloke who was staying in the place. He worked at JET (the Joint European Torus) - I told him how interesting I thought the place was and that I'd heard they actually got to break even point (something quite superficial in the news was published that day and broadcasters didn't think that the worlds first fussion experiment to break even was as important as what colour dress princess Di was wearing that day - neadless to say it didn't get reported!). He told me that they actually had it up and running beyond break even for a few mins after that.

It's such a shame we haven't moved faster in progressing towards a solution - I know the research is expensive but what a beutiful ideal fussion is if we can get it sorted. Star power for the world - no more energy problems for ever. I hope the powers at be plough the money thats needed into the right areas to get this done - I'd love to see it in my lifetime. Then we can stop using up all the oil.

  19. Hmm.. Ok I only just realised this. (have a rep point for my dog in the woods question from another post the other day YT). Where does the window show what your current rep is though??
