I had no contact with the former tenants, I only saw the places where they lived and raised their families for a time.1. If these people were clinically depressed, no, it would not have made the slightest differance wether they owned the homes or not.
Part of the agreement in accepting such housing is a duty to keep health department standards for cleanliness. I think such knowledge was assumed. I guess I also made the mistake of assuming that anybody would realize that when enough grease accumulates on the countertop next to the stove, cleaning it up will allow you to actually use that countertop again.2. Did anyone teach these people how you clean houses? Or did theyjust assume that such knowledge is automatic?
No.3. Were there clauses in the agreement that prevented maintainance?
Such as apathy regarding the conditions in which you live. This is my whole point. But I would disagree with the excessive wealth part if that wealth was hard-earned. People who come into sudden wealth they didn't earn can fall prey to lack of pride in their efforts as well. People who order transatlantic takeout are not usually those who have worked their ass off for the money it requires.4. Long term poverty can inculcate unhealthy attitudes, as can long term excessive wealth.
Again, I had no contact with the former tenants.5. Sufferers of Psychosis and Schizophrenia are someimes not very good at the requirements of daily living.
I made no judgements or assumptions about the people other than to say they treated their gift poorly. I further attributed this treatment to the fact that they were handed this gift and felt no pride possibly because they had not worked hard to earn it.I don't know the situation you were in, or what had happened there, for all I know they may indeed have been complete lardass slobs.
But they may not have and it's really dangerous to make assumptions.
Congratulations! Something tells me that although you have seen the very situations hasmusen is talking about, from the poverty to the medications, you will probably not be ordering fish and chips to be flown over from London.I am doing pretty well lately. I recently had a most incredible bit of luck. An uncle (quite old) I scarcely knew died and it turned out he was amazingly rich. Guess who is one of the heirs.0 -
Telepathy and other magic of this sort needs to be confined to the Pseudoscience sub-forum.I know what people like this are thinking.
I can appreciate this view. I'm personally put off by most hard-core porn. I feel it demeans both the viewer and the subject, besides leaving little to imagine. But I understand my opinion is not shared by most males.I can certainly understand the interest in [child porn'], like a hetero man that may not buy hard core porn of women can still understand the interest other men have in it.
I respect this. It is actually a logical fallacy known as Slippery Slope, suggesting that abuse that starts small will inevitably lead to bigger abuses, but I happen to believe that is human nature. It takes a very strong person to resist the temptation.I can say that my experience is you always start wanting something a bit more aggressive. I don't know where that trend may lead if it could lead to abuse but I just don't care to have my career ruined and risk jail time because it led to pics that where illegal. I've seen enough problems Pedophiles have gotten themselves into because of porn and I don't want to risk it.I think we've identified some very important distinctions here. I know I still feel that children prior to puberty should not be led towards sexuality. It sounds like that view is supported by the pedophiles posting here. I understand that your views towards those individual children who show a tendency towards early sexual initiation are different. No one here seems to be advocating seduction of innocents.
But are there ways that children who do show sexual interest before puberty can be channeled towards intelligent choices beyond their wisdom?

Brevity is the soul of wit.shouldnt that start off 'a man walks up to the checkout with a microwave meal for one'?
Man: "Rabbi, since we're not allowed to work on the Sabbath, is sex considered work or play?"and you still owe a joke from your first reply to callipygouseRabbi: "Sex is definitely play. If it was work, my wife would have the maid do it."
A stick.ok, whats brown and sticky?0 -
Some capitalist you are if you can't see the benefits of sending them a measly $1000 to get $2.5M.

Did I say they were? You owe us two jokes now. Make 'em funny.ok... the two arent mutually exclusive.Cashier: "You must be single."
Callipygous: "You can tell that from what I'm buying?"
Cashier: "No, you're ugly!"

I split the thread off from the original.how did this get unlocked?
Good point. Name changed.this is more of a discussion of one persons moral fiber than a discussion on dog muzzling.0 -
I was reading about Greek burial customs recently. In Greece many burials are disinterned after 3 years and 1 day' date=' the bones being placed in a jar, in order to make room for the next burial.
Only, recently, bodies are so filled with food preservatives that they won't decompse in the graves.[/quote']This just absolutely blew me away.

I want to say I admire all who are posting in this controversial thread for their tact, insightful comments and good judgement. This could have so easily degenerated into a flame war long ago. Kudos to all.
That said, due to the many complaints we are receiving about this thread's content from members, I am closing it for today (possibly longer pending administrative decision).
If it gets opened again, I would remind those posting from both sides that this is a science forum, hence we need citation and studies referenced. There are plenty of places on the web to discuss personal sexual opinions.

I found this debate (so Dak and I can sleep again) at:
http://www.gatorace.com/blog/archives/2005/02/mensa_desk_cale.html
It seems more people feel that $0.76 is correct and that the calendar's answer is wr... wro... wr... wrong.

Does your turbine provide energy beyond what's needed for the generator to keep the compressor going? I am assuming the compressor powers the turbine, is that right?

Here is one of the biggest problem with gifts. There are those who genuinely need a helping hand, and my heart and my tax dollars gladly go out to them in times of trouble. But there are far more people who are simply opportunistic or lazy. I'm not making this judgement without experience. No administration whether left or right has ever proposed so, because it seems the people don't like any kind of minimum "gifts". This will never change and has actually gotten worse in the US in the last decades.I once did some HVAC maintenance work on a government subsidy housing project. I had to replace some registers (the adjustable metal diverters that direct the flow of air from floor heating vents) and thermostats in some 30 apartments where the past tenants had stolen them upon moving out. I was appalled at the way these people had taken care of the homes the government provided at low-or-no-cost. Granted, the ones I went to were probably the worst of the lot, but what I saw was disgusting. There was no pride evident anywhere in these homes.
I realize that some of these people were not at the high points of their lives, but I can't help but think they would have taken better care if they had worked hard to own that home. I think many people resent having to be given something and take out their aggression on the gift itself.

I think, sadly, you made the mistake of thinking he understood what you were saying, instead of just unconditionally loving you and whatnot.I, sadly, ended up killing my dog because of his stubbornness to listen to somethings, although he was very loving and whatnot.0 -
Thank you Coral Rhedd. I hoped it helped you to write that as much as it helped me to read it.I am going to respond to this paragraph in your post because it is the only one to which I feel I can speak. I have been homeless. It is clear to me that a national healthcare program would help us in the US more than a national housing program. I also would like to see a national campaign for cleaning up this country again. I'm a big fan of the broken window theory. Neglect breeds crime. Show criminals that people care about their neighborhoods and they go elsewhere.
Most here are too young to remember the national anti-littering campaign that then-First Lady Lady Bird Johnson spearheaded. It was so successful that, to this day, I can't stand to see people throw trash on the ground. Sometimes I think politicians don't want the citizenry coming together in a common cause like that anymore. It shows us how powerful and effective we can still be.

Disturbing is humorous... to a raven.I'm finding that pretty disturbing on several levels.0 -
YT2095 has a raven that quotes long passages from Poe to him.I'm now waiting on tenterhooks for a good anecdote.0 -
Can you please elaborate on this before your thread takes a course you probably didn't intend?Homelessness in the US is simply an "ideological" choice the americans like because if you are poor you should be punished by not having a home. The US could easily solve its homeless problem, but the people love the idea of seeing how the homeless are punished.0 -
Since hiccups are a spasming of the diaphram due to pressure differentials, I think it must be coincidental that breath-holding or sugar-swallowing seems to stop them. Perhaps it soothes you enough to relax the diaphram. Since they go away in time anyway, perhaps the time involved in finding the sugar, teaspoon or malt vinegar is sufficient.

Maybe a little off-topic, but did you ever see Mother with Albert Brooks and Debbie Reynolds? There is one flawless scene where Brooks has gone back to live with his mother (Reynolds) and they're in her kitchen. The dialogue is something like:For the longest time my mom would get on my case when I told her I don't drink juice - she'd insist it was good for me and I shouldReynolds : "Let me fix you something to eat."
Brooks : "I'm not hungry, Mom."
Reynolds : "I'll just heat up some meat loaf."
Brooks : "Mom, you know I'm a vegetarian."
Reynolds : "So I'll cut the top half off."
Brooks : "What will that do?"
Reynolds : "There'll be less meat."
When it comes to food, we have some very funny notions. What is good for selling food is not always what's good for those eating the food. I'm with Coral Rhedd, it's a conspiracy to hide the fact that sugars make us eat beyond the point of being full.
Soda pop is another substance many people who count calories overlook. I know lots of people who are careful with their diets but drink 4-5 cans of pop. Subconsciously, they don't think things you drink count as calories.
To get back to the OP, watch out for products containing glucose, since that is the actual chemical sugar structure of blood sugar. All carbs eventually end up as glucose so their is no quicker way of getting it into your bloodstream.
