  1. English English speakers doubt English English speakers all the time . That's why they don't understand what they are talking about . There is so much double meaning in English that eventually trying to keep track of all the possibilities is a recipe for a memory crash . It extends from the man in the street to the houses of parliament . This is why another question must eventually be asked to understand a previous answer . Imatfaal , as much as possible I will comment about my answers in isolation to their surroundings unless I specifically refer to another answer . In summary , Sciencer , Good chap or lass as he/she is , posted , " If 0 = 2 - ( 1 + x ) , isn't the correct answer x = 2 ? " . We are all agreed about what the correct answer is , it is x = 1 . If I am asked , isn't the correct answer x = 1 ? , I will answer " no " . I'll take my response of " no " to the question to mean x = 1 . And " yes " to mean it isn't . If you want to do the exact opposite , then do so . If math thinking and general public thinking clash , that is the way it is . C'est la vie !
  2. I'll suggest that you put a diagram here to allow responders to put a visual concept in their minds . I know it may be simple to imagine but help the responders and they will give their views .
  3. Imatfaal , my conclusion must be some words of wisdom . Most of the time when negatives are used in a question , for instance , don't you want a cup of coffee ? , people don't know what they have been asked because they think they have been asked , do you want a cup of coffee ? . These are not the same question and they cover all possibilities and the same answer , therefore , can't mean the same thing . If 2 answers of yes to these 2 questions result in 2 cups of coffee then questions are pointless . Why have a language where people ask questions if the answers don't matter ? When a lot of people give the wrong answer to the question , ad nauseum , somebody somewhere will try to explain that they really were only using general speech and everyone actually should excuse their ignorance and replace it with their own . The people who are wrong are explaining why they are right and believers are believing them . This post is totally relevant to this topic because the overall theme is math and the number of cups of coffee to be made is a math question . These sorts of questions are a major source of errors and misunderstandings in english and I wouldn't want to decide whether a jet fighter was flying at 35 000 ft based on a yes or no reply to the question , Aren't you at 35 000 ft ?

    Equation

A solution has been found , the original poster is happy and I need the practice ! I didn't finish with a quadratic so ....... interesting ! Let me know if there is a mistake .
  5. Imatfaal , I shouldn't be posting off subject as the higher powers that be don't like that sort of thing , so quickly , you posted , " it was widely perceived as a protest against the tide of commercialism and pressure that young consumers felt. ". I don't know whether it was or it wasn't , maybe Mick does . I just thought he was having a great time . I wonder if Mick Jaggers' fans felt pressure from the tide of commercialism to buy his vinyl . I also wonder , if Mick wanted to make a protest against commercialism , why didn't he give his records to his fans for free ?

    Laser Pointer

I would go down to my local Electronics Store and have a chat with the resident expert when he/she has a spare hour . I'd prepare the 20 questions beforehand !
  7. It should be noted that when Mick Jagger sang , " I can't get no satisfaction ! " , I suspect he was getting plenty of satisfaction . ( exactly as he was saying ) Likewise , when the kids sang , " We don't need no education ! " , I suspect they did need an education . ( exactly as they were saying ) And , if you don't know what I'm talking about , then maybe you've been on the wrong side of the pond for too long .
  8. That's it , mooeypoo , Thanks ! What you say is what I wanted to know . I'll increasingly use LaTeX when I can . Maybe a few more people will enter some thought's about the original post .
  9. sciencer in the original post writes .......... If 0=2-(1+x), isn't the correct answer x=2? A simple question, before the author of the book is notified of the print error The simple question is .......... If 0 = 2 - (1 + x ) , isn't the correct answer x = 2 ? The simple answer is yes . The correct answer isn't x = 2 . The correct answer also isn't 2435782 . 815243 ! When computer programming interpreters ask these types of questions , ( on those circuit boards under your keypad for instance ) be sure to know what they are or aren't asking and what you are or aren't asking them to ask !

    Equation

    More to follow ....
  11. Which of these that follow would you think are confusing to a person learning the basics ? The first 8 expressions are meant to convey the same information . 1 , Y = Sin x 2 , Y = sin x 3 , Y = sinx 4 , Y = Sinx 5 , Y = Sin (x) 6 , Y = sin (x) 7 , Y = Sinex 8 , Y = sinex 9 , Y = 0.000000700000131
  12. I think this type of question may be interesting and a bit elementary to this area of Medical Science . But we are all here to learn in one way or another and people here sound like they like their bacteria , so here goes . Let's say for the purpose of this question that there is a person who regularly urinates on the same 100 lbs of plant soil day after day . Would a point be reached where the different types of bacteria present in the soil just can't cope with the chemicals present ?
  13. Let's say for the purpose of this question that there is a person who regularly urinates on the same 100 lbs of plant soil day after day . Would a point be reached where the different types of bacteria present in the soil just can't cope with the chemicals present ?
  14. Should we now ask the original poster if there is enough information here to allow the solving of this problem ?
  15. When you differentiate , what you are trying to do is to get a general expression for the derivative , so that when you then want an individual value , at a specific place , all you have to do is put in the value of x and calculate . The problem with thinking that the slope is from one point to another is that these 2 points ( if we take it as 2 points ) are so close together that the slope is in effect a slope at one point . ( wtf does that mean I hear you say ? An instantaneous slope ! ) Just something else about wtf this all means . If we take for an example a car that is moving along at a certain speed , at an instant it is like time has frozen . No time has passed for it to go anywhere or indeed for it to have arrived from anywhere . It still has an instantaneous speed ( derivative of distance with respect to time ) . It still has an instantaneous acceleration ( derivative of speed with respect to time ) .
  16. My first line ........ dy/dx = 0.5 [ ( sin x + ( ( sin x + ( ( sin x ) ^ 0.5 ) ) ^ 0.5 ) ) ^ - 0.5] [ d/dx ( sin x + ( ( sin x + ( ( sin x ) ^ 0.5 ) ) ^ 0.5 ) ) ] I think that if you can understand this line here you will have no problem finding a solution . Making that solution easier to understand may be difficult but technically you will have an answer that is correct . I am a great fan of brackets !
  17. Help not answers ! if y = ( sin x ) ^ 0.5 then the derivative is 0.5 ( ( sin x ) ^ - 0.5 ) ( cos x ) = 0.5 ( cos x ) / ( ( sin x ) ^ 0.5 )
  18. I think localization gives time more legitimacy . For example , if I was walking around London and a person asked me what the time was , it might be fine to quote the time in Paris and still be technically correct . But , London has it's own time . This is why under the current system quoting the time in London as 6 PM is better than saying , " its 7 PM CET " , while being in London . As for the Moon , I think I'll keep my invention of Lunar Standard Time secret for another while ........... oops !
  19. If I understand correctly then the suggestion is that to find the time , while a person is on the moon , this person would have to communicate with Earth . Does this mean UTC exists on Earth and does not exist on the Moon because there is no available reference of UTC locally ? ( locally relative to being on the Moon )
  20. Can UTC only exist on the moon if a clock was left there ? If it can then does anyone know where on the moon someone may have left a clock ? ( Assuming of course someone may have previously lived there for a short time )
  21. Does anyone know of a time system on the moon ?
  22. This is Franc Grom who from what I see is an expert with eggs !
