  1. lemur , In answer to your first question , Maybe , when a lot of sick people are near the Japanese plant , people who are educated will know it wasn't B.S.E. , G.M. Foods , etc . Radiation as I see it is what has been radiated and radioactivity is one of its properties . In answer to what I think should be done about the problem . What is the problem ?
  2. I'll tell you why a rotory engine is great . Someone sat down and designed the F****** thing to move you , the kids , the wife and whoever else is in the car , down the road , up the road , back down the road , up the road , ad infinitum ( get it ) !
  3. And how does water itself rate ? Can it soak up water ?
  4. Looking from the future back to now seems quite the thing to do . When children are born with deformities in 25 years time , people will wonder why it's happening , because they will not be old enough to remember the earthquakes of 2011 , while also not being educated enough to know that radiation stays around for a long time .
  5. I was unfortunate enough to be managing my personal settings one day , , when I thought it might be efficient to delete the attachments in the 10 MB memory area . This was mainly because 10 MB could be filled quite easily , so it would be good to keep it clear . Later , I realised that all attachments on posts had been deleted . Would it be a good idea to be able to delete from personal settings whilst keeping post attachments ? 10 MB also seems like an amount of memory based on a time long gone ! Is it time to use 100 MB ? We must progress ! We need technological advancement !
  6. sootydaz , I think that you have the impression that there are 3 materials that give these statistics and you must find them . You won't . There are a huge number of materials being made by manufacturers and different material contents can give the same properties . That is why you are being told that it doesn't matter what you decide on , once you give references . There is no specific solution . I think your first Modulus of Elasticity for material X is a bit low at 161 GPa . I adjusted for an instrument error I think may be present and I get 200 GPa . For the second Modulus of Elasticity of material Y you give 278 GPa . I did the same adjustment and got 289 GPa . Ask the person you are doing the assignment for , to explain to you what effect on your graphs measuring instrument errors will have and what you should do to make an adjustment . I'll just say that if you look at data from steel makers you will find suitable materials there . Where you look is your decision in the world of cyberspace . Take into account all the properties you are being asked to calculate . Material Z is strange . You can't get the same information about it from calculating as about the other two . I decided on a figure of 947 Pa for the Modulus of Elasticity . This is not an exact science . Where you take your stresses and strains is always going to be approximate . The material is very stretchy and weak relative to steel . 20 years ago the internet didn't exist in the form it does today . When people wanted information about materials they had to go to a factory and talk to the people or use the telephone or make a request in a letter using the postal system . Hal_2011
  7. Inigo , Vera is classed as a gun . But if she didn't propel anything other than her post combustion products with a nice big flame , she would look , to me , like her principle of operation could be described as being a jet engine .
  8. sootydaz , Keep in mind that the properties of a material can change a lot with an increase or decrease in temperature . Young's Modulus of Elasticity is denoted by the letter E . I am assuming that these materials are metallic . Your question is a bit like trying to identify a car by how fast it is travelling down the road . Lot's of cars have the same speed and so speed on it's own can't be used as a way of identifying the particular car . Material X has an E = 161.29GPa . An alloy of Copper 86 % , Manganese 12 % , Nickel 2 % can have an E = 159GPa . Manganese can have an E = 200GPa . Material Y has an E = 277.8GPa . An alloy of Tungsten 90 % , Nickel 6 % , Copper 4 % can have an E = 276GPa . Tungsten can have an E = 411GPa . Material Z has an E = 600Pa . That's extremely stretchy and an example of such a material is not easy to find if it even exists at room temperature . If this is a typographical error and you actually meant an E = 600GPa then an alloy of Tungsten 94 % , Cobalt 6 % can have an E = 600GPa . Hal_2011
  9. Janus , When electronics is being studied a person must imagine the electronic component in a textbook question and what is happening to it . Will the component heat up too much ? , what is the weak point ? , will it rupture ? When that electronic component is a person in an electric circuit some of the questions are , Can I apply enough force to stop my hand muscles from clasping this object ? , Why is everything gone quiet ? and Why are people moving really slowly ? Did you ever go into a swimming pool and under water you can still hear things but it is at a low level ? Well , then you exit the water and the sound increases . That is what it was like the instant that I let go . I always try to imagine a number of joules of energy in terms of how long it can keep a 100 Watt bulb on . So the work done during this electric shock could be the equivalent of lifting a 1Kg mass through a height of 2.45 metres . Thanks!
  10. Inigo , Why is Vera a gun and not for instance a jet engine ? Has it to do with the fact she has or has not got a projectile ?
  11. Inigo , one more question while you have the spare time , What is the technical reason that classes Vera as a gun ?
  12. Note : The wiki makes a distinction between Electric Shock and Electrocution . Death caused by an Electric Shock is called Electrocution . So , I must have had an Electric Shock as I'm still alive . Also , according to the folks over at the wiki there is quite a large variation in Resistance of humans due to factors such as the path of the current through the body , physical size and so forth . There is probably such a large possible error multiple in a calculation that any meaning taken may just be as good as a guess .
  13. Inigo , Would a propane / oxygen mixture give an unwanted detonation ?
  14. If 2 people who have Down's Syndrome have a child , what is the chance of that child having Down's Syndrome ?
  15. What is the most hygroscopic material in an ordinary household ?
  16. As a kid I was electrocuted by being in contact with approximately 400 volts ( alternating ) at a street light . I don't know how long this was for as my perception of time became distorted . Possibly , it lasted less than 5 seconds . I don't recommend anybody intentionally makes contact with a voltage like this in this way . Funny as it might sound , does anybody have any idea of how much energy I dissipated ?
  17. Inigo , Why is there a preference for propane / air mixtures ? I like to throw a few numbers into my calculator to see what I get , can you say what the amount of propane used is per explosion ? Would it be possible to use acetylene / oxygen mixtures ?
  18. What are the odds of a 4.649 magnitude earthquake and a chimney falling down ? What are the odds of a 5.233 magnitude earthquake and a wall falling over ? What are the odds of a 5.447 magnitude earthquake and a crack in a pipeline ? What are the odds of a 6.227 magnitude earthquake and a cooling water supply being lost for 6 hours ? What are the odds of it snowing for 6 months ? What are the odds of Mickey Mouse , Donald Duck and Bugs Bunny being alive and well in Hollywood in 2100 AD ?
  19. I would ask whether Existence can be mathmatically described .
  20. Wonder some more Charlie , if you ever find your solutions they will be worthy of high accolades , possibly .
  21. Fundamental to Mechanical Engineering is how things are measured ; eg , Mass in Kilograms ( Kg ) , Force in Newtons ( N ) , Distance in Metres ( m ) , etc . www.bipm.org There are numerous systems for measurement , S.I. was not invented overnight .
  22. Day Day DrRocket , and then there were 2 !
  23. Imatfaal , Consider the possibilities . Make your choices and let me know . Be careful . Don't contradict yourself . Lack of ignorance is always my goal . Dr.Rocket , As an example , the purpose of language is to ask for a bag of chips for one's snack when needs require so , not inconsistent with your impression , shouldn't I utter ?
