  1. One of my stupidest but proudest is ;

Jumping off a 35 metre rock cliff ( I was 10 at the time) plummeting into the sea beneath ..

    and went for seconds .

When I was that age I jumped off a cliff high enough that one of my eardrums burst. I had to have a piece of skin from behind my ear grafted onto it.

    I think I win. :P

  2. I have seen these markers and I was wondering if anybody knew the chemicals used in making them. The paper that goes with the markers is coated in some type of solution that will turn the clear ink in the markers the corrisponding color but each marker turns the paper a different color.

Anybody know how they make them?

  3. 30V will NOT spark through the air without preionization. However, Assuming you can supply enough current, if the wires come close enough together to touch the tips will heat up enough to ionize the air. The wires can then be pulled back creating an arc between the wires. This works much better with carbon though.

  4. I disagree. Although ionization CAN happen first it does not always. It completely depends on the conditions. If you have two spherical electrodes the air will ionize the same time the spark forms because the spheres reduce corona keeping the air from becoming ionized. In triggered spark gaps a higher voltage spark will ionize the air allowing a lower voltage discharge across the gap.

Also, a spark IS ionized air (plasma).

  5. what? stimulants for ADD? i thought that stimulants caused[/i'] ADD-like symptoms, as they inhibit your brains ability to filter-out uninportant stimuli, and so make it harder to concentrate on the relavant stimulus?

They have the opposite effect on people with ADD.

  6. What are everybody's views on stimulants (such as Ritalin and Adderall, but not limited to) prescribed for AD/HD?

I few topics I'm interested in:

    • Stimulants prescribed for school-age children
    • Teachers pushing stimulants on students
    • Stimulants prescribed for adult ADD

  7. Melting the salt is the easy part (use a plumbers torch and a brick), the hard part is getting metallic sodium. At those temperatures the sodium will react with the air almost instantly. You would have to spray the reaction with an inert gas which would make direct heating impossible. You would thus have to heat from the underside which would be much more complicated and require more heat to overcome the losses.

Electrolysis of NaCl is possible but if you want it to work it wont be cheap. You might as well just buy sodium off ebay.

  8.

The best conductivity of any metal' date=' shallowes skin depth, heavy, cold, shiny, and won't leave your hands tasting like copper when handled.[/quote']

And its not that expensive either in comparison to metals such as platinum and gold.

  9. not really all that scary. i am probably the only one in the school with enough testicular fortitude to go through with it. then again, i wouldn't warn them. :D

I'm really glad you live in Indiana.

  10. My favorite changes from day to day.

My current favorite is copper because you can plate it on to everything. I also think its one of the most attractive elements. Bismuth and gallium are also fun.

Mercury is not expensive. Its actually pretty cheap and a lot of people would pay you to take it from them.
