  1. Then my choices seem to be limited to bacteria that is already present floating in my room, or some other hardy bacteria that will hold it's own in a petri dish. Is there a large risk that if I culture bacteria from my room, it could turn out to be pathogenic and harm me? Also, is there even anything I could do with regular bacteria in my room, besides culture it and watch it grow?
  2. Culturing cells that won't kill me or make me sick would be fun. Sorry, I should have clarified earlier that I was looking for an experiment that I could do in my cramped room. Something to do with culturing and/or manipulating cells.
  3. Does -0 count? http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&rlz=1G1GGLQ_ENCA295&as_qdr=all&q=-0&btnG=Search
  4. Good stuff! I love the big bang theory tv show, yet somehow I had not known the the bare naked ladies sang that song, but now I do, and that totally makes sense! Thanks. haha I just youtubed Tim Minchin as well, and that guy is hilarious! If you open your mind too much, your brain will fall out!
  5. I hope the title is fitting... I was wondering if anyone has some favourite geeky, nerdy, science, or sci-fi related bands? (metal or good punk bands get bonus points) To get things rolling, I heard of Warp11 on either the Trekkies or Trekkies2 movie, and they are actually pretty decent. They are a star trek rock band. I'm not much of a crazy trekkie (I wish), but they still made some cool songs. There was also some other klingon death metal band on those Trekkies movies, whose name escapes me. Give me some more gloriously geeky bands, please. edit: I guess I also listen to some HORSE the Band, and their genre of music is kind of known as nintendocore now. They have fused 8-bit nintendo sounding beats with american hardcore music (don't ask me how it works, but it does), and they have some lyrics to do with old video games such as mario 3.
  6. How about the physics classroom? Seems to have a lot of good basic physics info.
  7. Hello all! So here's the deal... I don't have much biology experience (a couple first year university courses, and of course highschool, but I am starting a biotech program in college in the fall), but I am extremely interested in starting some do it yourself (myself?) biology experiments. I subscribed to the DIYbio emailing list, but I have to admit that it seems like an overwhelming amount of info being thrown at me, and I don't know where I could begin. ** I was wondering if any of you lovely ladies and gents had any great links to experiments or experiment ideas to do with manipulating and growing cells, and maybe some nice lists of equipment I would need and how to go about getting it. It would be greatly appreciated. ** I have found agar recipes online, but am not sure what is the best for growing different cultures. And I can't seem to find a place around me which sells agar, which is weird. A couple of weeks ago when I was in spain, I saw a big package of agar agar in the local grocery store, but I hear that powder might be easier to make consistent batches. Thoughts, ideas, or stories?
  8. Not that the theory in this thread uses any actual evidence to back it up, but I was wondering what does happen to matter and energy after it is sucked into a black hole? Are there any theories out there by respected scientists that do suggest black holes might create new universes?

    Watchmen

I had never read the comics, but went to see the movie with some friends anyways, because we were bored. I think the general consensus was that it was definitely worth our time and money. But I came out having a few questions.... What's with all the blue genitalia? If Mr. Manhattan wasn't "human" enough anymore to wear clothes, why couldn't he at least change his appearance to not include that massive blue thing in every scene? Also, I don't mind bone-crushing violence in my movies now and again (as long as it comes with a great storyline), but why did the masked vigilantes all seem to have super strength and extreme tolerance to pain? I thought they were supposed to be normal people, and the movie never explained otherwise. Yes, I did think it was a great storyline at least and a good movie, so I don't have much to complain about, just those couple of questions.
  10. I know this is an old link, because it's from 2006, but it is still relevant. It seems this guy tried eating monkey chow for a week, hoping it would be close enough to a humans needs. Although he did have some problems by the end of the week in making the monkey chow leave his system. How close would monkey chow be to what humans would need in nutrition? Would it not be possible to ease yourself onto this diet so that one would not have any problems getting that chow back out the other end?
  11. Obviously too drunk on beer to think about chex mix at the same time.
  12. haha yeah Futurama had the right idea. But does Ensure really fill you up like a solid food would? I've never had it, but it still is just a drink. I really can't believe that nobody is cashing in on human kibble or bachelor chow. I've ate horrible tasting food by choice before before, and if it's nutritious as well, then that only adds to the incentive.
  13. What about eating a bunch of baking soda and then washing it down with vinegar?
  14. Where is it? I'm hungry all the time (high metabolism, not overweight yet), and too busy/lazy to always make a well balanced meal. Is there a form of people chow out there, as opposed to dog/cat chow? I can't seem to find any info on it, and if it doesn't exist, why not? I would think that it should be possible to make a food for humans with all of the required vitamins, minerals, fats, proteins. Even if it couldn't be recommended to eat some sort of human chow for every meal for long periods of time, I still think that it would help a lot of people (including myself) get a better intake of nutrients. Thoughts?
  15. Thanks for the help, but cheese also gives me an error that no camera is detected. BUT when I use dmesg in a terminal after plugging in my webcam, it shows these entrys; [87973.016057] usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 7 [87973.265988] usb 2-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice [87973.270061] usb 2-2: SN9C105 PC Camera Controller detected (vid:pid 0x045E:0x00F7) [87973.536488] usb 2-2: No supported image sensor detected for this bridge So, it is detecting my webcam, right? But webcam programs seem to not detect my cam, probably because the webcam isn't being associated with a video device in my dev folder. I want to try the driver in the link you sent me, but I have admit I'm somewhat of a linux newb, and am not to confident on how to compile and make and how that all really works. And it seems to be for a much older kernel version, and my webcam isn't listed as supported on the driver website. Any other ideas? I'm at a loss. Ok I let synaptic package manager take care of it with a rewritten driver by the same guy that I found called gspca-source, and it still didn't do anything.
  16. I want to use my webcam in a msn compatible program in linux, and I need some help. Here is where I am at: -running Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) -I have a Microsoft Lifecam vx-1000 webcam -I heard aMSN was pretty good and actually had webcam support, so that's what I've been hoping to use (aMSN 0.97.2) -I've used lsusb to see that my webcam is indeed connected and detected and the green light on it is on, there is power. -but when I try to configure my audio/video settings in aMSN, it tells me that a webcam has not been detected by aMSN -I tried using Camorama Webcam Viewer, and it says it could not connect to a video device (/dev/video0) and indeed there is not a single video device in my dev folder. -I figured that I might need some sort of driver for the webcam, but could not find where to get one for linux, or what I would do with it. -I heard that I might be able to use the windows xp driver for this webcam if I used WINE. -I have never used WINE before and I tried right-clicking the xp driver and opening in WINE (which was configured for xp) and it gave me an "extraction failed" error and said it was unable to find a volume for extraction. ??? Please help, I would rather spend hours and hours trying to figure this out than spending any amount of money on another webcam. This one works fine under xp, but I'm trying to gradually shift over to ubuntu completely. I would rather not have to continue to dual boot, and this is my last major issue. Thanks.
  17. Hi, just wondering if anyone knew if it is possible to get any sort of job in the computer technology sector without a college diploma or university degree, but instead having certifications like a bunch CompTIA certifications in different things? Anybody currently working in the computer technology sector that could give any advice? Specifically networking and linux operating systems are some of my interests, but I'm not sure if I want to go back to college. As I am a fan of learning and gaining knowledge for myself, but not so much a fan of school. I would rather start collecting certifications in things that interest me, and am just wondering if I could get a good job with this kind of education?
  18. I'm not! I would just like to free up all that extra memory that the porn sites are taking up in my history. That and I don't think my girlfriend will want to know that I have such an addiction when she uses my laptop. Hopefully by the time it gets to version 1, google will have taken into account my needs, but I still don't know if I will switch from firefox. I don't like the idea of giving one company so much power. I already use so many google services like their search, gmail, earth... etc. I don't want to give my soul over to google yet.
  19. All in all, I'm liking what I see. It seems like it has a lot of promise, and I'm writing this message using chrome right now! I'm assuming that the look is just temporary, and that they are working on that. It's not that I think it looks bad, but would it be too much to ask for it to use the same windows styles as everything else, so that it doesn't look completely out of place? Other than that, my only other really big complaint right now is that I can't seem to see an option to keep from having my history recorded. I did notice that you can open an "incognito window", which effectively does what I was after, but there is also no option to always open in incognito window mode. I like the option of opening a bunch of tabs of my choosing when the browser starts.
  20. I'm using the ethernet cable that came with the xbox360. Also I can't reach the router as it's on another floor in the house and I don't want cables running through the house. Shouldn't ICS (internet connection sharing in xp pro) work? The xbox website seems to be telling me to use that.
  21. Alrighty... -I have a laptop connected to the internet through a wireless lan. -I want to connect my xbox360 to my laptop using a network cable, so that I can share my inet connection and play on xboxlive. -How? My laptop is running windows xp pro. I have connected the laptop to the xbox360 physically, but I don't know how to share my inet with it. Please help.
  22. I believe that was the song Bat Country by the band Avenged Sevenfold. haha But seriously, who doesn't love playboy bunnies? There are also plenty of people who want to be like them, and I don't think it's all that surprising.
  23. What about millions of infinitesimally small red dots that flash in and out because I can never focus on them. They don't affect my vision, so I'm not going to see an optician, but they aren't something on the outside of my eyes. Maybe random constantly firing red cone cells (? the ones for colour)? What I see sounds sort of like what PhDP was talking about, except they are red flashes of light which are smaller than anything I could ever focus on. And I don't notice them either, until I try to pay attention.
  24. Yes, but can meditation give you the benefits of REM sleep? Meditation may be as good as a short nap, like you said, but a short nap doesn't really do much more than to calm you down to a rest state, does it? So you could easily substitute your naps with meditation, but many people, such as myself, don't nap at all, and don't get worked up enough during the day to require it.
  25. I'm not living in Tibet, but probably, they seem like nice people . But I'm talking about trusting many respected scientists on something that they would have no reason to lie about.
