  1. I believe that the main concern is the possible link between internet use and political and religious radicalization See" Report: Internet radicalizes U.S. Muslims quickly" http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/feb/27/report-internet-radicalizes-us-muslims-quickly/
  2. People who make decisions based on their emotions usually make poor decisions. I think that most violent crimes result from people's emotions overcoming the restraints of rational decision making. Frequently parents, swept up by their emotions, will murder their own children. I don't believe that animals ever murder their own children. It's obvious I think that animals that did do so would become extinct.
  3. Political leaders do try, though. What comes to mind is the famous quote from President John F Kennedy's inaugural speech: "And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country. " See http://www.jfklibrary.org/Asset-Viewer/BqXIEM9F4024ntFl7SVAjA.aspx
  4. Here is a more accepted meaning of the term levity: lev·i·ty/ˈlevətē/Noun:Humor or frivolity, esp. the treatment of a serious matter with humor or in a manner lacking due respect. I like THIS definition of levity. I believe that efforts to explore the connection between science and THIS meaning of levity have proved to be more fruitful at this science discussion forum. Check out the threads in the Lounge on zombies and the Higgs boson.
  5. Here is perhaps an interesting statistic I did a google image search on the phrase "Jesus tattoo". It returned 5,940,000 hits i.e. images of persons who have some depiction of Jesus tattooed on their bodies. The same search on Richard Feynman returned NO examples of persons who have gotten his portrait tatooed on their bodies. People HAVE however gotten Feynman Diagrams tattooed on their bodies.
  6. Is the Higgs boson an indivisable particle like the photon , or might it have an internal structure?
  7. Richard Feynman was also part of the group that worked on the atomic bomb during the second world war. The team that came up with the atomic bomb has had a pretty big influence on human history.
  8. My understanding is that there really isn't a paradox because one twin is subjected to non- inertial forces of acceleration and deceleration that the other twin is not subjected to.
  9. You made a good point. I've been practicing my Lightsaber skills, and perhaps can get work in the movies or in TV as a Zombie Killer. Baltimore (where I live) has become an attractive locale for television and movie crews to do location shooting. The new HBO political satire starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, called “VEEP,” is being shot in Baltimore. Perhaps I can get work defending Julia Louis-Dreyfus from a hoard of Zombies.
  10. "We know that gravity is mass, but do we have any idea why the mass of an object would cause an increase in the gravitational pull as compared to smaller mass?" An answer to that is that mass induces a curvature of space, and that the greater the mass the greater the curvature.
  11. I would raise one point about the photon being considered its own antiparticle. When two particles like the electron and positron collide, they "annihilate" each other in the sense that the product of their collision is energy (photons). All of the particles' mass is converted to energy. But the photon is already pure energy (no rest mass),so when two photons collide, the product of the collison is what exactly? More photons? This is just a guess on my part, but aren't there Feynman diagrams in which two photons merge (collide) to produce particles with rest mass like the electron?
  12. Higgs Boson Spotted Enjoying Himself at Baltimore's Inner Harbor
  13. "Existence of GOD (particle) confirmed. President Obama Displays an Image of GOD (particle)"
  14. Here is an image I cooked up which I've titled "Higgs Boson Discovered in Baltimore "

  16. I read that the Higgs boson is its own anti-particle. What does that mean? Also, are there any other particles that are their own anti-particles?
  17. I read one explanation that I find perplexing. The author states "His suggestion was that particles like protons neutrons and quarks gain mass by interacting with an invisible electromagnetic field that predates the universe called the Higgs field". It's not understandable to me how one can meaningfully discuss invisible fields that predated the universe, as all of space time originated in the big bang.
  18. Good idea. In fact, I recently had the opportunity to purchase a Darth Vader Light Saber and was looking for uses for it. I could use it to decapitate Zombies! To see me practicing my technique, check out the video
  19. I think that you have touched upon the great key question that pertains to reconciling General Relativity with Quantum Theory: How can the fabric of spacetime itself emerge from a quantum fluctuation?
  20. I think we could be having this discussion again after the election. If republicans win control of the senate and keep control of the house, this controversial "tax" could very well be repealed. The republicans could attempt to do what the democrats did: use the budget reconciliation process to push through changes in the healthcare law while avoiding a democrat filibuster in the senate.
  21. I remember watching rockets launch on TV and noticing that the direction the rockets' nozzles were under servo control. Perhaps there are electronics you could adapt for this purpose?
  22. sure it works take a look at the size of my eye in my self portrait icon (upper left) I was holding a magnifying lens in front of my face
  23. People have been telling me that I have a diamagnetic personality. When I asked them what they meant they said "ANYTIME WE GET NEAR YOU, WE FIND YOUR PERSONALITY REPULSIVE!"
  24. I believe that the concept of spin originated in spectroscopic work with atoms. Physicists looked at how spectral lines split in the presence of a magnetic field, and from the splittings deduced that electrons have half integral spin .
