  1. "It's the way the Universe is...." That's almost as bad an argument as: "'Cause the Bible tells me so" That's not the kind of argument I'd expect here. It's obvious I'm going to have to contact a local Physics professor to get an answer that satisfies me, I emailed one a few days ago, it looks like I'll have to drop by the University.
  2. The Casmir effect, which increases by the inverse forth power.
  3. But there is a very simple explanation of ugly poluted water, impurities disrupt the pattern.
  4. Caspase-12 has to convey some fitness if it occurs 20% of the time in blacks, don't allegies come from too strong a reaction of the immune system?
  5. Does this backwards light have special properties, or is it a parlar trick? If I remmeber second semester physics correctly, light is a packet of an electrical occialation at a right angle with a magnetic occilation, does reversing this (ie changing a 90o to a 270o angle) change anything?
  6. If it ain't broke don't fix it, remember, the Titanic was "unsinkable".
  7. Apes have the intellgence of small kids, and kids can do some clever things too. All you have to do is turn on the news to see how arrorogant and full-of-ourselves humans are this would point to the possiblity that we are overestimating our uniqueness.
  8. I've heard too much about hemp to think it's all in the imagination of stoners. I think hemp methanol may be viable. With the problems with peak oil, whatever we use as a methanol source should be genetically engineered (Aaargh!) to grow fast. Are there any subsidies on oil? As a kid, I'd hear about the "oil depletion allowance", all the time. As the price of gas goes up, methanol will become cheaper than oil. As for having enough land, beef requires 20 pounds of vegitable protein to make one pound of beef protein, 5 pounds of vegitable protein to make one pound of pork, poultry, or dairy protein. So moving towards a vegitarian diet( the price of animal products will go up with peak oil), will free up land.
  9. I've watched that "trash" 4 times, because there is plenty of truth in the movie. Alas, while hado - the sending of good vibes to water appears not to have been replicated, therefore someone should, at least provisionally consider it invalid, the hydrogen bond has some unique qualities as zeropoint forces are comparable to chemical ones. Heavy water is toxic, which, to the best of my knowledge makes it unique among stable isotopes (this is the difference in the zeropoint energies of hydrogen and deuterium). here's a thread where some of the unusual qualites of water are discussed. http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=19846
  10. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Taft Who else? This should be interesting when they try to use Diebold machines to "re-elect" him in Ohio.
  11. If you were to do useful work from the gamma rays, you'd be creating order.
  12. Aren't photons produced in this reaction? Since the escape velocity is less than the speed of light this would generate energy. Alas, there probably is no catalist, as a neutron star is very dense, and it requires a fair amount of mass.
  13. Much of this is based on the power of positive thinking/prayer. When someone is worried, the adrenals kick in with a fight or flight responce, which evolved to shut everything else down in a life threatening situation. Also, HIV binds to a receptor which is often covered by theVIPetitide, which is related to self love, enough selflove and HIV has no home. There are amazing concidences, I've heard that in order to get life, you'd need a petitide of 32 bases the odds against it are 20^32 to 1, for a bird to get a functioning wing, you'd need many simulatious mutations. If one is missing, you'll just get a nonfunctioning organ. It's hard to explain by Natural Selection, is it just a miracle? I can't answer that.
  14. There is an article in New Scientist about 2 mathemeticans who think a new hypothesis in Physics is flawed. They claim that if true, it would prove determinism. I think proving determinism would lead to paradoxes, but I'm not clear as to how.

    Hado?

The longer I look, the less likely hado appears to be true. As far as I'm conserned, CASE ALMOST CLOSED.
  16. The definition of science varies from science to science, and from scientist to scientist. Here's the debate on Is biology a science? It talks about the inherent strength and weaknesses of biology and physics. Sometimes science is "You're all I've got tonight, but you'll do." and we have to accept probably yes/no, inconclusive, likely yes/no but it's too important to forget the question. Definition is too strong a word for me, but guidelines would certainly help.
  17. So far it the only answer I've gotten is that exploding black holes have to be entropic because entropy always increases. This is as bad as saying creationism is true because the bible is God's word. Padren, the only effect on the outside universe is that you could hook up generators to get much more energy from the gamma rays to get lots of energy.
  18. I know that entropy isn't conserved. But if going from visable light to infrared is entropic.... Isn't going from radio waves to gamma rays negative entropy? How can entropy increase in this situation?
  19. I've heard that they are entropic, but it doesn't seem that way, have scientists twisted the idea of entropy so it seems to apply here. Here's how I understand entropy: Light from the sun hits a surface on earth, gets reradiated at room temperature. Visable light is degraded into less useful, less powerful infrared. Now to our black hole: After a septillion years, background radition is radio waves, that get sucked into a black hole, which explodes into gamma rays. How is entropy preserved?
  20. Quite wacky, but I'll bet some day it will be testable. Does biocosm theory imply that before the dawn of man or life the Universe was different, because there was no one to think about it? Obviously, then it's false, because we can look through telescopes to billions of years past, and eeverything is the same or close to it. If true, there must have been a phase change in the Universe related to intellegence or conciousness. There sure doesn't seem to be one. Oh well, at least we can use philosophy for enteraintment.

    Hado?

So you're saying that we know everything that goes on in a cell? Before the genome was sequenced scintists thought there would be at least one gene for every protein actually there are about 5 proteins per gene, something is missing, the extra information is somewhere, could it be in the water? I also remember hearing that sequencing the genome was the easy part, understanding how proteins fold in 3 dimensions would be much harder. Before Watson, Crick and Franklin, DNA was called "the stupid molecule", because it was so big, only came in 4 forms, and didn't seem to do anything. Maybe (H2O)5 and (H20)6 are used as a very efficient binary code. If so, it could greatly improve our fitness. http://www.watercluster.com Here's something about Pentagonal Water from someone whose email is @mit.edu and claims to be a professor

If you're right (and you probably are) its a pity. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't semantic. Even if I'm barking up the wrong tree, the truth may be up an adjacent tree. The hydrogen bond has zeropoint qualities, ie at that scale zeropoint energy is comperable to binding energy. Water has different qualities (boiling point, adhesion etc.) than CH4, NH3, and HCl, even heavy water is different, it's toxic.Water has very rare or unique traits. http://www.wellnessgoods.com/waterpuzzle.asp There have also been numerous studies that correlate prayer and positive thinking to health (starting with Norman Cousins). There's got to be something there, even if Dr. Emoto is a fake.

    Hado?

By "non replicatable" in this context do you mean that no "standard" for beauty and ugliness exist, in which case I'd say that this still has plenty of potential, or do you mean many other scientists have tried to duplicate the experiment as closely as possible, with guidance from Dr. Emoto, and failed? Before we throw this out, I think an independant referee, observing Dr. Emoto's experimenting, should watch him and find that crystalisation doesn't occur in "beautiful" or "ugly" patterns. The potential is too great. Insane, do you have a link so I can see exactly what is meant by "non replacatable" in this context?

    Hado?

Not pseudoscience, hypothesis. There are pictures of what hado is, defying conventional explanations. To dismiss it out of hand is to lose any possible benefit if it's real. The possibility is reasonable, the potentional if it's real is astounding. Water has rare, if not unique qualities, even the possibility of a memory.
