  1. I just googled "Savonius" and it seems my soda bottle idea is Very similar, only with 6 to 8 Blades instead of the 2. I think it`s a great design and much better in many ways than the typical prop blade sort, it was thinking of a water mill that gave me my idea originally
  2. I will point out that where possible every effort is made to only put assertions in there, and that questions of enquiry (no matter how bizzare) are free to be posted in the appropriate subforum. and it`s worth a mention that threads moved or originating in the P&S fora are not necessarily on a one way ticket to Stay in there, some prove themselves and get taken out into the main-stream science areas as well.
  3. there are some awesome strains of Saccharomyces (my favorite animal) out there, that will not only produce alc to nearly 30%!!! but do so in matter of a few days it doesn`t taste particularly nice, but it is potable.
  4. actually, All of it right up to the LEDs was recycled from "junk" I had laying about, I`m sure given a little more time I`d have worked out a shroud to protect the motor, but that would have used sealant that you can`t recycle. I should imagine that having half a dozen of these could be used to charge batteries for some really usable power also, certainly enough for a small radio or calculator etc... the idea`s quite simple too, all you do is slice along the bottle with a box cutter top to bottom between 6 and 8 times and then turn these strips out a little (don`t cut all the way though) then the motor spindle gets rammed into a cork and then the cork into the bottle neck, then you mount this on a bit of wood as a base with another wooden post running alongside the bottle (allowing room for it to spin) with a nail in the other end of the bottle to give stability. the nice part is that unlike ordinary propeller blade type fans, it doesn`t matter which way the wind is blowing for it to work
  5. no, SOME are "out of date" (if such a term can be used). as for the end of your post, Lose the attitude or lose your ability to post here again.
  6. when I used to live in a highrise there was always plenty of wind on the balcony, so I made a small wind powered generator (just for fun) out of a 2l plastic soda bottle and a small motor out of a video eject mechanism, it was enough to light a couple of LEDs, so you could probably keep a mobile phone battery topped up with it. it would be impractical for general use though as the weather (esp Rain) would screw up the motor pretty quickly, but as Proof-of-concept, it worked rather well
  7. in Electronics it`s not misleading though, it`s used all the time and is a perfectly valid acronym for micro farads. "Values of capacitors are usually specified in range of Farads (F), microfarads (μF or MFD), nanofarads (nF), or picofarads (pF), as one, millionths, billionths or trillionths of a farad.[2] The picofarad is sometimes comically called a "puff", as in "a ten puff capacitor". Since the Greek letter μ caused printing difficulties, the notation uF (or MFD) is often to be found as a substitute for μF in the electronics literature." taken from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farad
  8. IIRC, the Right hemisphere deals with imaginative aspects, and the left is mostly the Logical side.
  9. with Sulphuric acid, you only gain safety with dilution in that it buys you time to wash it off if you notice a spill on you or other things. unlike a few other of the mineral acids, it doesn`t evaporate along with the water, so it becomes very concentrated over time anyway, that`s usually when you notice mysterious holes in your clothes hours/days afterwards, or a stinging sensation of your hand or whatever, some after you`ve finished with the acid. 10 to 20% should work nicely though. and both of the hydroxides you listed will work also, the others have unwanted breakdown products that will spoil the cells objective, so it`s best not to use them.
  10. no, it`s marked up `mfd` but it does mean Micro Farad, yes. not ALL capacitors use that symbol to state their value.
  11. Naah, it`s about the size of a `D` cell.
  12. if you want to split water then use dil H2SO4 and make the Pt electrode the Oxygen side, not the Hydrogen side, as it the oxidising side that does the damage to the electrodes, the copper will be fine at the H2 side. also, where did you get your fuel cell from? I have a pair here, and one is a splitter, it`s basically a fuel cell that works under water and in reverse, it also uses plain water. perhaps the place you bought your fuel cell will also supply a splitter?
  13. I`m not sure I`d exclude bio systems from being an object, I think an "Object" is something that can be focused on, like objective.
  14. but saying "High 30" doesn`t quite have the same ring to it.
  15. that "principal" will never effect me again, I bought an entire box full of them!
  16. use a camera flash charger and capacitor, I did a single stage coil a few weeks ago with a Hydrogen Spark-gap trigger and threw a 120 gram screwdriver 8 foot across a room the cap was 350v @ 560mfd.
  17. Today I found a place where I can get refills for my PEZ dispenser

Me... I just looked in the SFN Staff room.
  19. at the top where it says My Account pull down that window and click on Edit Your Details, let that page load. then on the left hand column click on edit Avatar (6`th one down), then just follow the instructions.
  20. Very, and why don`t You try and figure out why, trust me, it`s not that hard to work out
  21. indeed, you should never start any type of diet without 1`st getting medical advice, however excersize Freely
  22. Problem solved, I bought a 5 port USB 2.0 card that fits in a PCI slot and it`s working perfectly now. I had to switch off the existing 2 onboard ports in the BIOS, but that still leaves me with 3 extra ports. still have no idea Why it was doing it though?
  23. and Where in the EM spectrum does it fit then? what frequency is it?
  24. ok, this is going to be a whole easier to Rewind and start from the beginning again for clarity`s sake. the comb/water effect is induced by triboelectrics. here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triboelectric_effect this in turn creates an electrical potential. here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrostatic_potential which in turn has an electric field, here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_field in specific related to electrostatics here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_field#Properties_.28in_electrostatics.29 the electrons (electrical field) exerts a pressure, and that causes movement.
