can anyone recommend some good books on electrochemistry... but I mean really good books.. and preferably not too old. and .. I'm not interested in websites unless they're just too good to miss.

I don't get it. What exactly is it? My questions: 1. Why is it that the greater the vapor pressure the more volatile something is? 2. Why is it that the boiling point of something is when its vapor pressure equals that of the atmospheric pressure? Thanks!

Copper piping for potable water use must now be sweat-soldered using only lead-free solder. Does anyone have experience with these new solders, regarding their relative ease of use, strength of the joint, and leak-tightness? Imp.

Sorry, I'm not 100% sure this an inorganic question, but I'm having a little problem understanding this. Why does PCl5 + H20 --> H3PO4 + 5HCl but PCl3 + H20 --> H3PO3 + 3HCl Basically, why does PCl5 form phosphoric acid as opposed to forming phosphonic acid? Thank you!

So in my lectures this semester I've been taught about Cytochrome C. What a marvellous enzyme! Reminds me of motorcycle couriers, shuttling electrons from one place to another. Ok, what gets me is this: how does the electron (bound to the Fe (II) of the haem) get from waaaay deep inside the enzyme to the substrate? I've tried to find papers on this, but theres nothing concrete out there. Its been sugested to me that the electron travels through a small "channel"; this just dosnt sit well with me. It would make more sense to me if the electron was somehow "passed along" the protein chain, so to speak, until it gets to the substrate. Hmm Matt

Hey, I have heard that removal of Cl2 can be removed from water by allowing it to sit for 12 hours or more. I was wondering how this works. I have set it up and was also wondering if anyone knows of any technique to detect Cl in liquids.

  12. Hi there, I hope i've posted on the right forum! Just a quick query: I'm trying to deduce which of two clay soils is better for building a house on. My first problem is trying to find out what clays they are. My first clay has a cation exhange capacity of 54.9, so am i right in thinking this is kaolinite? My other clay has a CEC of 3, so i'm thinking this is a hydrous oxide clay? Can anybody give me an indication as to what properties I need to be thinking off when considering which of these is best for house building? E.g - if the clay had been montmorrilonite - I would have known it has a tendency to swell, so a good reason not to consider it for hous…

Brønsted-Lowry denotes that Acids are proton doners and bases are Proton acceptors....fine: So why is it that a weak acid like HCLO4 can be made by its conjugate pairs H+ and CLO4- but a strong acid like H2SO4 or HNO3 will not i.e. a strong acid can be split in the following way HCL >>> (H+)(Cl-) but (H+)(Cl-) will not join to give HCL

I know this might sound a bit crazy, but I need some help, and I am not a chemist by any means, so I thought I would get a few comments from a few of you that seem to have this as an interest. I was working for a company that had a Chemical Lab, just after I had suffered having 6 warts electrically removed from my hands (Burned off). I met a chemist that had a similar problem, and he did not suffer the way that I did. He went back into his lab, and from what I understand, mixed two acids together, and he came back to me and said, "Here's the Mother of All Acids". I kept this acid for a long time, until I moved. I was rushed, and gave the acid to my neighbor befo…

hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone could help me with these questions. if you could give me an explanation as to why it would be great. Just some questions I have been having difficulty in solving. How many lone pairs of electrons are on the sulfur atom in SO2? What is the expected number of valence electrons for a group 3A element? Use VSEPR theory to predict the molecular geometry HCN. The molecular geometry of a molecule whose central atom has four single bonds and two lone pairs of electrons is ________. In valence bond theory, a p bond is described as the sideways overlap of two unhybridised ________ orbitals. How many sigma (s) bond…

I'm in the process of making a wall powered battery adapter. I'm surprised that something like this does not exist already on the market or if it does I have not found it. (If anyone knows about such a thing please let me know.) I have a digital voice recorder and I mostly use it in one location and it's very important that it does not die on me during use. It does not provide a jack to plug an adapter in so I'm forced to create something instead. I have my design already made up. I'm making some pseudo batteries out of a dowel and some fuses for contacts. It normally takes two AAA batteries in parallel. My question is this: How much wattage or ampacity sho…

I've read somewhere that a 'GEL' like substance can be made of 95% mineral oil and 5% polymer resin. This resin is a powder/crystal that, when mixed with the mineral oil, transforms it to a more 'solid state'. This final 'solid state' is then heat melted & end prod. resembles 'transparent soap' or 'solid gel'. Can somebody pls. elaborate on this reaction between the 2 ingredients - is there heating required or adding of other ingredients etc,etc.. Stef.

for all of those poeple who have read the Radioactive Boyscout by Ken Silverstein, on page 151, he describes how david used a "lithium replacement" method, where he heated a lithium strip with potassium nitrate and ended up with a potssium strip and lithium nitrate powder. is it possible for a reaction to happen so cleanly like that where lithium and potassium atoms replace themselves exactly so you have a potassium strip and lithium powder? if so, how do you go about doing this? thanks
