Hello - I like many have been putting together a element collection, thruthe years have been pretty successful as far as the pocket book allows. I am now trying to acquire various Uranium related chemicals or compounds to add to the starving Uranium suite of the collection. I am advidly looking for a sample of Uranyl Nitrate crystals & a sample of what is refered to as Yellowcake Uranium? I would appreciate any advice or suggestions from anyone toeards my ongoing endeavor Thanks to all... Steve

Will lithium metal stop reacting with water when the solution (lithium hydroxide) becomes super saturated? If not, what is the proper ratio of lithium metal to water to make a lithium hydroxide solution? Would I then evaporate the solution to obtain lithium hydroxide crystals which would be reacted with hydrochloric acid to make a lithium chloride solution which would be evaporated, or would I just mix the lithium hydroxide solution with the hydrochloric acid and then evaporate? What is the proper ratio of lithium hydroxide solution to hydrochloric acid? What is the proper ratio of lithium hydroxide crystals to hydrochloric acid? Or is all of this just in vain and I c…

When you want to precipitate a compound from a solution, say from an experiment where magnesium chloride is obtained from the reaction of hydrochloric acid and magnesium metal, do you let the solution evaporate completely or do you wait until a significant amount of crystals have formed and then filter it? Thanks, Ken

Hi I have a question about dbl-displacement reactions. When you write the net ionic eq but both products are soluble, how would you write the equation? Or would there be no equation? Thanks

Hi. I've to do the characterization (UV/Vis; FTIR; magnetic susceptibility; condutimetry;) of some Nickel(II) complexes like Ni(Et2en)2X2 where X= Cl-, NCS-, NO3- and I-. It's a college mini-project: i've to write a cientific paper following the rules of some chemistry journal. Can you help me finding some information about that? Like books to search..or free net papers.. How can i show the results of a UV/Vis and FTIR analysis on a paper? Because de Bologna declaration i'm having lab classes and haven't yet attend theoretical ones . Thanks for the atention. Best regards!

According to wikipedia, heating sodium bicarb gives you CO2 and sodium carbonate. Also, it says further heating will give you Sodium Oxide and water from thermal decomposition. This means that you should end up with sodium hydroxide. Will this actually work? I couldn't figure out what happened last time I tried because my test tube decided to shatter... I'm pretty sure I got some sort of alkaline solution because me hands felt soapy, like it usually does after handling a base. So...Anyone tried this? Does it actually do this? That would be really convenient!

Out of pure curiosity I decided to try to determine the radius of a Carbon atom plus the average distance between atoms in Graphite to give me the total distance between the center of two Carbon Atoms in Graphite. Here's my data: Graphite Sample Density: about 2.23 g/cm cubed. Carbon Atomic Weight: 12.0107 g/mol. Avogadro constant(L): 6.02214279(30)×10^23 Start by determining how many moles are in our sample: 2.23 g / 12.0107 g/mol = 0.187 mol Then multiply it by Avogadro constant to find how many molecules of carbon are in our sample. 0.187 mol * (6.02*10^3) = 1.13*10^23 molecules in 1cm cubed Find the cube root of this: = 4.817*10^7 molec…

Got a lot of it from an old chemistry set. I read somewhere that it hydrolyzes in water to form a dilute sulfuric acid. Is this true? I have tried it in a small amount of water, heating and mixing along the way. I have it stored for now, but not sure if it worked. Thanks, Ken

Hi I want to make a hydrochloric acid i heard you can make it with salt and vinager. Could some one tell what the proportions are for that and i what precautions i should to take to handle and dispose of it. im just using it to clean pennies as an experiment im new to chemistry and thats all i have availbable right now. i also need to know how to check for purification too thanks to all in advanced:-)

Hi all, I know its not a very difficult thing to answer, however it is difficult for me who to believe. Does Magnesium reacts with cold water. My guess is yes, but in such a way as if it doesn't, very slow. But, some say it doesn't react AT ALL. whats ur take on it! Answer'll be appreciated! Happy Eid and Merry Christmas to all!

Hi Im fifteen and I just started to get into chemistry really seriously just a few days a go to be honost. I found this website and this is what made me realize I really wanted to go into chemistry as a major. If any one could give me advice on experiments I could do or advice on chemistry I cant take it in school yet and I have overly worried parents so the experiments cant be anything spectacular until I take a chemistry for a while at school.

  18. Hello everybody, I do electrolysis of NaBr solution with graphite electrodes. Actually the electrical connection is done with stainless steel fastener screw on the graphite electrode plates with copper lug and electrical wire. The stainless steel screw as been pulverize with-in 2 weeks of operation. Is somebody have a better way to connect the electrical wire to the graphite plate ? All the parts arent immerge into the Nabr solution. Thanks Pop

What properties do sulfur particles possess that allow them to reflect the sun's rays back to space, like those in the 1991 Pinatubo eruption? I couldn't find websites that have this information =.=. (Must have been my very bad research skills) Is black carbon another aerosol that can reflect light besides acting as cloud condensation nuclei? Many sources keep citing sulfate particles without black carbon particles as aerosols that can encourage global dimming. Please help me out here! Thank you =).

This a tutorial on how to make HCI by mixing salt and vinegar. I found this as a thing to make shiny pennies it uses 4 solutions number 4# is HCI. Note HCI is very dangerous and you don't want to drink it or get it on anything. Science Concept: By mixing vinegar and salt to make hydrochloric acid, a strong acid, it will dissolve away the corrosion compound on pennies. Materials: four 250 mL beakers 1 tablespoon (2 g) sodium chloride (salt) cup (120 mL) vinegar cup (120 mL) distilled water cup (60 mL) detergent several dirty pennies Procedure: Label the 4 beakers 1, 2, 3, 4. In beaker 1, mix 60 mL of detergent with 60 mL of water. In beaker 2, put 6…

Hi folks, I'm looking for a way to make ferrous chloride. I'd like to try using it to lightly tarnish and give an aged look to nickel plated metal parts. I have used ferric chloride (etchant solution) both full strength and diluted with mixed results, perhaps due to differences in the nickel plating. Someone told me that ferrous chloride works better and yields more consistent results. I've read that it can be made by adding steel wool to sulfuric acid. I'm not a chemist, so I thought I'd ask some people who know more about this stuff than I do. I'm wondering what ratio of ingredients I would need and how I would proceed safely to make it. Perhaps there's a …

I know i would have to titrate it with potassium manganate and use colorimetry but i am stuck on writing the method for how to extract the iron form the tablet. I would really appreciate any help.
