hi why is that cyclobutadiene doesn't have resonance forms? If possible, explain it using the Valence Bond Theory as opposed to the Molecular orbital theory

I have three isomers of an alcohol: 1-butanol, 2-butanol, 2-methyl-2-propanol and all three are mixed with 12 mol HCl. Now is this a halogenation reaction or hydrohalegenation reaction? And also how can intermolecular forces explain this. Doing the experiment, 2-methyl-2-propanol turns instantly cloudy, 2-butanol experience a tiny colour change and 1-butanol does not react. Any ideas?

does anyone know of a simple effective method for this to be done to Benzoic Acid, to make Phenol? I`ve googled till my fingers are sore, and can`t find a usable method, and yet 90% of Phenol is produced this way (damn their trade secrets!). maybe I`m missing something? the best I can come up with so far is: http://www.chemguide.co.uk/organicprops/acids/decarbox.html giving me Benzene.

i am on a commitee to convert our school to biodiesel(more specifically, a council of teachers and students trying to convince the school board). our first meeting is wednesday and i know almost nothing about biodiesel. so far, i know: made from soybean oil cheaper than traditional diesel renewable, so it will stay cheaper no need to do anything to your automobile that runs on diesel we are going to make some as well. it won't be pure enough to use in a truck, though. since the prices of fossil fuels rise, won't that cause the price of goods that are shipped by truck to rise? if so, biodiesel could help fix that, i think. anyone know anything about bio…

I am 100% sure this topic would deal with Chemistry. Anyway, 1. Can Caffine kill you if you drink to much. 2. How much would you have to drink. 3. What is it in it that would kill and what does it kill. I tried searching the Internet but couldn't find much on the subject. I will keep trying. Maybe it is just the terms I am using.

Hi, I'm wanting to dry ethanol. I've got the normal 95% stuff but I want as much out of the water as poss. So I've been reading around. My options are to use magnesium calcium/barium oxide But I have none of these. I was wondering if making a simple galvanic battery in the ethanol would work. So I was thinking: add some salt (table salt) put some alu foil around some coins or wire and put it in the ethanol. Shouldnt this remove the water? making alu hydroxide and hydrogen? Remove the wire/coins and then distill. But I'm not sure how long this will take, weeks? Or add some sodium hydroixde to the ethano/water mix then add the…

Hello. Nothing to do with skins under bikinis, nor the sun is involved... How does it work? Can an animal hide be processed at home? What chemicals are involved and what goes on the process ? Thanks, Miguel

My mother has been teaching a science class in summer school, and one of the activities she did with her students was making butter from scratch. I postulated that putting a churner inside the container along with the heavy cream while shaking it would speed up the process, but my mother says it has no affect whatsoever. Is there an experiment I can do to test this hypothesis? I'm a bit hung up on how to make the shaking constant, seeing as two different people would shake with a different force as would one person using two different hands.

How dangerous is natural gas or methane gas when consumed? In the past I have cooked foods which consumed have often possesed the unmistakable smell or taste of natural gas. I find it difficult to understand how the natural gas can form over food since it doesn't become soluble easily, but nevertheless I have avoided using my gas hob due to this event. What are the dangers linked with natural gas in circumstances of accidental oral consumption? Can unburned methane gas as a gas vapour condense onto food? Any reply over this issue will be appreciated.

My kitchen sink accumulated lots of fat and dirty water cannot be discharged. I tried to put some drain cleaner but it failed to remove the oil. It corrodes my kitchen sink instead of "eating" the oil. Eventually, I asked my parents' friend for help and the problem is solved. I learn lipase from pancreatic juice can digest the lipid into fatty acids and glycerol which is soluble in water. Moreover, bile salts in bile emulsify lipid into small oil droplets and aids the removal of it./ Nevertheless, it is quite difficult for some normal civils to utilize them in this way. Anyone knows some reagent which aids me to get rid of these oil?

Hello:) I am interested in structures of hydrates and I want to get information about some hydrate former guest molecules. The reason why I am writing here is to ask whether there is some way of finding the molecular sizes of molecules, such as carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene, 1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane and tetrachloroethylene. I will be glad if anyone can recommend a computer program or method to determine the molecular sizes. Thanks:)

I have a question that i don't know where it fits really, but i figure this is a good place to start, if a terrorist exploded a nuclear warhead in the ocean in a part of the atlantic that has high deposits of frozen methane on the ocean floor, what would happen? Would a tsunami result from the explosion? I know the methane hydrate on the ocean floor is being touted as some kind of new potential energy source, so would this result in some massive chain reaction explosion? I know methan is a major greenhouse gas, so releasing large amounts would definately alter the climate, but how soon would those effects be felt( its for a book i'm writing in which a terrorist steals a n…

while fixing some broken watering pipes in our backyard my dad kicked over the can of purple primer (the stuff you put on the PVC before the glue to get the joint all clean and stuff) and it spilled all over our brand new concrete sidewalk. the stuff is purple, and apparently stains. so now there is this big purple sploch on our white sidewalk and im curious if you guys know of good ways of removing it. apparently the stuff is comprised of the following: methyl ethyl ketone, cyclohexanone, tetrahydrofuran, and acetone. if that helps : P would the same methods as removing oil stains do it? would bleech accomplish anything?

PVC is a vary versatile material that has similar properties to rubber, but unfortunatley PVC plastic is also hazardous to people from which it is known to produce dioxins and pthlates. This is a touchy subject because PVC has a vary unique property that enables it to be used in many different ways, and yet it is also known to be hazardous from exposure either at work or through inproper use. I'm a little worried because I beleive I may have been exposed to Vinyl chloride through inproper disposal. Last week a neirghbour was burning a heap of rubbish in his garden and when I approached him I realised he was also burning bits of PVC window frames. I became disturbed and…

this week's exam the last question asked for a synthesis of meta chloro propylbenzene. in notes, halides were considered to be weak as electron donating and electron withdrawing groups, but basically mostly neutral between the two. my proposed synthesis was the chlorination of benzene with AlCl3 as a catalyst, then meta addition of propane by using propyl chloride and AlCl3. the answer key says to add propyl chloride with AlCl3 and then to add chlorine, reduce the C=O with NaBH4 (i would have just done a wolff-kishner) then eliminate with H2SO4 and hydrogenate with H2 on a Pd catalyst. other routes would involve using TsCl on the -OH and eliminating with a st…

I was cleaning some glassware in the lab today with methanol and got some on my hands. I had just put fresh nail polish on that morning and after the exposure to the methanol, there was a white film all over my nails. It comes off with a bit of scratching but I was just wondering if any of you knew what was causing this.

I have read a few threads where people say that making acetyl salicylic acid is easy enough to do in the first week of an o-chem lab. I have little experience in organic and I was wondering how hard it is to get salicylic acid from aspirin. Any help and/or suggestions for other easy o-chem experiments is appreciated! -Justin
