Hi, I'm just learning the Aldol Condensation mechanism and in one video it's says under basic catalytic conditions the final product is usually the Aldol. Only under acidic conditions will the Aldol react further to form the a,b unsaturated compound. But on another video (by a different person) she says that by adding heat you can do the condensation under basic conditions as a molecule of OH- will deprotanate the alpha proton forming a pi bond between the alpha and beta carbons and kicking off the OH group. The first video must be wrong in saying that under basic conditions you stop at the Aldol product? I'm not planning to do this reaction just learn…

Hi All, Looking for some help on how to detoxify fentanyl. First responders (Law Enforcement & Hazmat teams) are running into this as a cutting agent and full scale labs. What would be an effective decontamination solution to detoxify fentanyl and Carfentanil? According to the DEA they have used bleach on an alcoholic solution of fentanyl and the structure was left unoxidized? What about high ph solutions of sodium hydroxide? Any help is appreciated! Thanks Hazmatter7

According to wikipedia, the energy density of coal is from 26-49 MJ/L. Meanwhile, for wood, it's only 13 MJ/L. Is this because of the tight molecular structure of coal, compared to the pentose rings lined adajcent in wood (cellulose, lignocellulose?). ~EE

Hi, I am new here, so let me first introduce myself. My name is Ilgis, I have master degree in analytical chemistry (1995) and PhD in applied mathematics (1999). All my scientific and industrial life I worked with numerical mathematics with chemical applications, NMR, MRI, supersonic combustion, etc, so, please, excuse me if my chemical knowledge is not on the top level, and I forget already some important thinks. Right now I have NMR device (with NOESY and HSQC) that is capable to measure in situ chemical reactions. I tested preliminary with polyester reaction (phthalic anhydride + ethylene glycol - H2O) and polycondensation of aspartic acid, however, I fell that these…

I am playing around with tissue culturing plants, and I am trying to mix a certain media mixture and it calls for 0.5 micromolar concentration of thidiazuron. I cannot find any info on how to measure that. can someone at least point me in the right direction on how to learn what I need to know to mix that concentration? I've never taken any chemistry classes so this leaves me a little confused.

I'm trying to figure out exactly how high octane gas works, and how it can remain stable under higher pressure in the cylinder. I assumed high octane gas (93+) has more benzene-like molecules in it to retain stability. So, I looked up a list of octane ratings of different fuels. At first I thought I was correct, because the two molecules with the second of thirds highest R+M/2 ratings were toluene (114) and xylene (116.5). I thought it makes sense because they were alkylbenzene molecules, so of course they'll have higher stability than a linear octane molecule and such. But then I saw that non-benzene molecules had fairly close octane ratings, like" isopropanol (118),…

Hi I am Currently working on an structure elucidation, for the compound C7H12O4. From the current information I have I have deduced that it has 2 C=O bonds and at least one OH group. Typically I would use the H-NMR to assist with the structure but, I am confused as there are only two singlets. one occur at 2.6ppm and another at 1.3ppm. with integrals 1.5 and 2 respectively. Any help with this structure would be appreciated.

Hello I've twice boiled some water (tap water which is from a well) and forgot to turn off the stove. The water all dissipated but leaves this sandy colored substance at the bottom. Its quite visible and seems to be quite a lot of it. What could be causing this ? The pot is a kitcheaid relatively new pot. Thanks

This has bothered me for a long time, and no one can explain it to me. It involves some pretty familiar and primitive P-chem that every chemist has experience with: melting-point depression (or elevation) in impure solid samples. What’s going on? Why does the mechanical contact of two crystalline solids affect their melting points? Let’s take the most common example: mp depression due to impurities. Pure A has a sharp mp of 150 deg C. Pure B has a mp of 170 dC (sharp). When we mix A and B together though, we find the mechanical mixture begins to melt at some lower temperature than either, say 120 d C. The explanation I was always given (with considerable hand…

Hello, I would really appreciate your help with following questing. In a test in organic chemistry I was asked to classify these organic compounds in order of increasing basicity in aqueous solution: 1. 4-trifluormethylaniline 2. Tributylamine 3. Methylamine 4. Di(dodec-1-yl)amine I think that the order of 1-3 is correct (3 – most alkaline), but I’m really not sure with 4. This compound should be lipophilic (surfactant maybe?) and I don’t know how it will react in the aqueous solution. I already asked my friends, but we are all just biology students and thus we have a little problem with that. Thanks for help and sorry for mistakes,…

I got a crate of chemicals from my neighbor, most were unlabeled. I found glass bottle of a red liquid. I mixed it with sodium hydroxide, and the solution bubled and turned yellow. Me thinks this is probably methyl red or some kind of pH indicator. Thoughts? ~EE

Hi everybody, I'm making some computer simulations using DINACICLIB molecule, a kinase inhibitor. link -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinaciclib It's the Oxygen deprotonated at pH 7.5? I think yes. What do you think about it? Maybe will be a stupid question but I must to be sure to use the correct protonation state. Thanks to all!!!

I've read a few of your past posts, but didn't quite get the answers I need at present. I like to fidget with science projects, so this is not supposed to be rocket science, just hobbying around the back yard. Organic chemistry is also not my forte. In my present project, after desiccation of a volume of air with glycerol, I need to recover the water as well as re-use the glycerol. What would you suggest is the best & cheapest way to achieve this?
